Nanocellulose can help paper and packaging block oxygen, grease, or water vapor, but results depend on the material and how it is applied. Recent studies show promising coatings and multilayer films—not a proven, off-the-shelf replacement for conventional paper or plastic packaging. Moisture sensitivity, performance after creasing, manufacturing scale, and cost remain important hurdles.

What nanocellulose means for paper and packaging

Nanocellulose is not one uniform material. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) differ in form and behavior, and their performance also depends on how they are produced, processed, and formed into a coating or film. A result for one formulation should not be treated as a guarantee for every nanocellulose product.

Researchers are exploring nanocellulose as a paper coating, a component of composite films, or a layer in a package. The aim is to combine cellulose-based materials with useful barrier properties while retaining the strength and flexibility needed for packaging. Reviews describe applications including food packaging, sensors, and nano-paper, but a promising use case is not the same as a mature commercial product.

What recent studies have demonstrated

Coatings on copy paper

A 2024 Forest Products Laboratory study tested cellulose nanocrystal, oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCN), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) coatings for oxygen, air, grease, and heptane barriers. In that study’s setup, TOCN coatings performed better overall on the tested barrier measures than the CNC and CMC coatings. The authors linked this result to the fibrils’ network structure and film formation at the paper surface; it does not establish that TOCN is universally the best coating.

Neat nanocellulose coatings did not readily provide a strong oxygen barrier. The authors reported that adding processing aids or other coatings was necessary for suitable barrier properties. Under the study’s low-humidity conditions, a 10 g/m² coating using CMC and/or an additional waterborne water-barrier coating achieved oxygen transmission of 1 cm³/m²·day. That figure applies to the tested formulation and conditions, not to nanocellulose-coated paper in general.

The same study identified a durability problem: “However, maintaining the strong barrier properties of nanocellulose coatings after creasing remains challenging,” wrote Ronald C. Sabo and colleagues. A barrier that works on a flat sheet may not remain intact after folding or creasing in packaging use.

PLA and CNC multilayer films

A separate 2024 study made multilayer films by coating CNC suspensions mixed with 15 wt% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or kappa-carrageenan onto polylactic acid (PLA). The experimental films were made without a petroleum-based tie layer or added adhesive. The study reported oxygen permeability more than 70 times lower than pure PLA film, and water-vapor permeability seven times lower than pure CNC film. These comparisons belong to the study’s specific multilayer formulations; they are not general performance guarantees.

The researchers said the PLA layer protected the CNC layer from water and mechanical damage. They also described separating the PLA layer by soaking the laminate in water after use. That experimental separation result does not show that every similar laminate will be accepted by local recycling systems or processed successfully in commercial waste streams.

What determines whether a coating or film will work

A barrier number alone cannot determine whether a packaging material is suitable. The relevant conditions and trade-offs depend on the product being packaged and the package’s manufacturing and end-of-life route. When comparing a nanocellulose coating or laminate with another option, consider:

  • Barrier under realistic conditions: Oxygen and water-vapor performance can vary with humidity, material source, processing, and film formation. Grease and air barriers may matter for particular foods or package designs.
  • Mechanical durability: Check strength, flexibility, and whether folding, creasing, handling, or impacts damage the barrier.
  • Coating quality: Transparency and coating defects affect appearance and performance.
  • Manufacturing fit: Added processing aids, water-barrier layers, or other coating steps may be necessary. Compatibility with existing coating lines and production rates matters.
  • Cost and scale: Laboratory performance does not establish that a formulation can be made economically and consistently at commercial volumes.
  • End of life: A material’s ability to separate in a particular experiment does not establish recycling compatibility in a local collection and processing system.

A 2024 review of cellulose nanomaterial barriers likewise emphasizes that moisture and oxygen performance varies with source, isolation, processing, material characteristics, and film formation. A 2016 Forest Products Laboratory review identifies economics, commercial-scale manufacturing, barrier performance, transparency, and mechanical performance as requirements for packaging alternatives.

Is nanocellulose packaging commercially ready?

The evidence supports describing nanocellulose packaging as promising research and prototype work, not a mainstream replacement for conventional paper or plastic. A 2024 review of nanocellulose in food packaging surveys potential uses such as intelligent packaging, nanosensors, and nano-paper, as well as modifications intended to provide antimicrobial, mechanical, hydrophobic, or antioxidant properties. Its assessment says nanocellulose had not been recognized in commercial production and application at the time covered by the review.

That review is not a current market census, so it does not establish today’s adoption rate. The studies do show that selected formulations can improve particular barrier measures. They do not establish universal performance, low-cost large-scale production, or acceptance in a given recycling stream.

How to assess a specific nanocellulose claim

  1. Identify the material: Check whether the claim concerns CNCs, CNFs, TOCNs, or a blend, and note any additives or other layers.
  2. Read the test conditions: Look for humidity, coating weight, comparison material, and whether the reported result is oxygen, water-vapor, grease, or another barrier measure.
  3. Check for use-related damage: Find out whether the barrier was evaluated after creasing, folding, or other handling relevant to the package.
  4. Separate lab results from production claims: Ask whether the formulation has been shown to work on commercial equipment, at commercial scale, and at a viable cost.
  5. Verify end-of-life claims locally: Confirm that the complete package—not just one layer—can be collected and processed by the intended recycling system.
