Namecheap can be a good fit if you want a registrar that includes domain privacy at no extra charge for eligible extensions. Whether it is a good value depends on the domain ending you choose and how long you keep it: compare the regular registration, renewal, and transfer prices, then check the checkout total. This is a review of Namecheap’s published pricing and policies, not a hands-on test of registration or support.
What this review can—and cannot—tell you
This review evaluates Namecheap’s published domain prices and support policies. It does not claim that the author created an account, registered or transferred a domain, contacted support, or tested the checkout process. TechRadar has published its own review; its assessment is separate from the pricing and policy analysis here.
Namecheap’s own pages are the primary sources for its prices and procedures. Those details can change, so the figures below are a dated snapshot rather than a guaranteed offer.
How much does a Namecheap domain cost?
On Namecheap’s domain pricing page as accessed October 7, 2026, the standard .com prices were $11.28 to register, $18.48 to renew, and $11.48 to transfer. The page also displayed a $6.79-per-year new-customer promotion. That promotional rate is not the standard price, and its eligibility and terms may differ from the standard listing. Check the live pricing page and your checkout total before buying.

Namecheap says a $0.20-per-year ICANN fee applies to some domains and is added to listed prices. The applicable fee depends on the domain and transaction; confirm whether it appears in your total. Premium domains may also have different prices. See Namecheap’s explanation of the ICANN fee.
Expect prices to vary by extension
Do not assume a .com price predicts what another extension will cost. Registry price changes can affect registration, renewal, and transfer rates. Namecheap’s notice for changes effective October 6, 2026, lists 226 Identity Digital extensions. As one dated example, it says .academy registration changed from $48.98 to $56.98 and renewal from $59.98 to $69.98. Those figures describe that extension and change—not a typical price across all domains. Check the current rate for the exact TLD you want in the price update notice and the live pricing page.
How to compare the real cost
When comparing registrars, use the same extension and registration term on both sides. Compare the standard renewal rate as well as any introductory offer, and include transfer cost, eligible privacy coverage, applicable fees, and the checkout total. A low first-year promotion alone does not tell you what the domain will cost to keep.

Namecheap says it adds a free Domain Privacy subscription by default for eligible registration, renewal, transfer, and reactivation transactions. It is not available for every extension: registry restrictions exclude some TLDs. Check eligibility for the specific domain rather than assuming privacy is included universally. Namecheap describes the service as provided by Withheld for Privacy under an agreement with Namecheap. Its privacy FAQ explains the eligibility and default-cart details.

What does renewal involve, and what if you miss the date?
Auto-renewal timing
Namecheap’s billing guidance says it attempts to charge for domain renewal 30 days before expiration. If a payment attempt fails, the system retries every 24 hours until renewal succeeds or the domain expires. Confirm auto-renewal is enabled and that the payment method on file works; Namecheap’s automatic billing guidance describes the process.
Expiry and redemption
Letting a domain expire can disrupt services: Namecheap says that after expiry it may change the domain’s nameservers, interrupting a connected website or email. The timing and available recovery options can depend on the TLD. Its pricing page also warns that certain TLDs enter redemption unless renewed at least 5 or 12 days before expiration. Check the deadline for your extension rather than treating either period as universal, and consult Namecheap’s expiry guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you transfer a domain to Namecheap?
Generally, a domain must be at least 60 days old and must have been with its current registrar for at least 60 days before it can be transferred between registrars. Country-code TLDs may follow different rules. Namecheap also cautions that transferring soon after renewing an expired domain can result in the old registrar revoking the renewal, with the additional year not being added. Check eligibility and timing before starting a transfer; Namecheap’s transfer guide covers these restrictions.

- Potentially a good fit: You want to register or manage a domain and value included privacy where your chosen extension is eligible.
- Compare carefully: You expect to keep the domain for several years, are considering a non-.com TLD, or are relying on a promotional first-year price. Renewal rates, extension-specific pricing, and fees can change the total cost.
- Check before acting: You need privacy for a particular TLD, plan to transfer a recently registered or renewed domain, or depend on a domain for website and email service. Eligibility, transfer timing, and expiry deadlines matter.
Namecheap’s public pricing and policy pages provide useful information for comparing costs and procedures, but they do not establish customer satisfaction, support quality, or service uptime. Choose based on the exact TLD, total price over your intended ownership period, and the policies that affect your use.
