If your nails have become brittle or are growing more slowly while you take a GLP-1 medicine, tell your prescriber if the change persists, worsens, or bothers you. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says these changes have been reported in connection with significant weight loss, but its guidance does not establish that the medicine directly causes nail damage or how often nail changes occur. Do not stop or change your dose without medical advice.
What is known about GLP-1 medicines and nail changes?
The AAD lists brittle nails and slower nail growth among changes people have reported after starting GLP-1 medicines, including semaglutide, liraglutide, and tirzepatide. It connects these reports with significant weight loss. That is an association, not proof that a drug directly damages nails. Hair-loss statistics sometimes reported for particular medicines are not estimates of nail risk. The reviewed sources provide no comparable nail figures for GLP-1 drugs, so they cannot show whether one medicine is more likely than another to affect nails.

When should you contact your prescriber?
Contact the clinician who prescribes your medicine if nail changes persist, worsen, or are bothersome. There is no validated nail-specific timeline or severity score for deciding when to call; this is a practical threshold for discussing a possible side effect, not a diagnosis.

It may help to describe when the change started and how it has progressed. Your clinician can consider whether it coincided with weight loss, changes in eating patterns, another medicine, or a separate nail condition. A dermatologist can assess the nails, particularly if basic care has not helped. The AAD recommends speaking with a dermatologist when its care tips do not help.
Should you stop or change your GLP-1 medicine?
Do not skip doses, stop treatment, or change the dose on your own because of nail changes. Ask your prescriber what to do. UK NHS guidance for semaglutide advises patients to speak with a doctor or pharmacist about side effects that bother them or do not go away, and to keep taking the medicine unless advised to stop. For people taking semaglutide for diabetes, stopping can affect blood sugar. The NHS advises consulting a doctor about stopping and not stopping suddenly.
What can you do for brittle nails meanwhile?
Moisturizing your cuticles is an optional supportive-care step included in the AAD’s advice. It may help with dryness, but it is not established as a treatment for the underlying cause of nail changes. The reviewed guidance does not establish supplements or nail hardeners as a remedy for GLP-1-associated nail changes.

When is it urgent?
Brittle or slow-growing nails alone are not identified in the reviewed guidance as an emergency. Seek urgent help for serious allergic symptoms such as swelling of the throat or tongue or difficulty breathing. Follow local emergency instructions for severe breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening symptoms. These are general medication-safety warnings, not symptoms specific to nail changes; the NHS lists them among signs of possible anaphylaxis in its semaglutide guidance.
