MyHouse remains a striking Doom II horror mod because it turns the familiar idea of a demon-filled house into a place that keeps changing its rules. If you want to play it, the 2023 PC Gamer guide identifies the playable file as MyHouse.pk3—not MyHouse.wad—and lists Doom II’s Doom2.WAD and GZDoom as the other required components. The exact-title 2026 PC Gamer article is listed on Ted Litchfield’s author page, but its specific argument is not available to verify; the discussion here draws on Dominic Tarason’s separate March 20, 2023 feature.

What MyHouse is

Steve “Veddge” Nelson shared MyHouse on Doomworld in March 2023. PC Gamer describes it as an expanded take on an older map framed as “my own house but full of demons,” but the result is not simply a conventional house level with monsters added. Its horror comes from a familiar space becoming unstable: rooms shift, routes appear where they should not, and apparent endings can prove false.

That structure makes exploration part of the experience. The player is not only navigating a map, but trying to work out whether the house can still be trusted. Tarason’s 2023 feature characterized the effect as an impression of something haunted and seemingly never-ending; that is a reviewer’s description of the atmosphere, not a literal property of the software.

How to play MyHouse

The following setup is the one described in PC Gamer’s March 2023 guide. It is not confirmation that the same files or compatibility advice remain current, so check the mod’s current release information and GZDoom build before troubleshooting against these older instructions.

  • DOOM + DOOM II on a region-free physical cartridge.
  • Includes: DOOM, DOOM II, TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, Master Levels for DOOM II, No Rest for the Living, Sigil & Sigil II, Legacy of Rust (a new episode created in collaboration by id Software, Nightdive Studios and MachineGames).
  • A new Deathmatch map pack featuring 25 maps
  • A total of 187 mission maps and 43 deathmatch maps in DOOM + DOOM II.
  1. Have a PC retail copy of Doom II. The guide requires its Doom2.WAD data file. If you already own a compatible PC retail copy, the instructions do not imply that you need to purchase the game again.
  2. Get a recent build of GZDoom. This is the engine the guide uses to run the mod.
  3. Get MyHouse.pk3. The 2023 guide points to the file in the Files folder of Veddge’s Google Drive. Follow the mod’s current release source if you are downloading it now.
  4. Put the required files together and launch the mod. The guide says to place the files together, then drag MyHouse.pk3—not MyHouse.wad—onto GZDoom.exe.
  5. Choose an appropriate renderer if effects fail. The 2023 guide recommends OpenGL or Vulkan instead of Software mode because some effects may break in Software mode. Treat this as dated compatibility advice, not a guarantee for every current engine build or system.

Why the experience works best with minimal spoilers

The central pleasure is discovering how far the premise can stretch. The 2023 feature describes an escalation from a retro-style house into shifting environments and strange set pieces. Naming those spaces in detail would give away discoveries that are more effective when encountered in play, so the practical advice is simple: read only what you need to get the files running, then explore for yourself.

There is no verified completion-time figure in the cited coverage. Tarason says the experience may run for hours, but does not report a measured playtime, and the available sources do not establish a player count, download total, or award result.

The House of Leaves connection

The name “Navidson Realty” points toward Mark Z. Danielewski’s novel House of Leaves, whose Navidson estate is labyrinthine and otherworldly. The allusion offers useful context for readers who enjoy literary horror, but the book is not needed to understand or play the mod.
