MyFitnessPal announced on March 2, 2026, that it had acquired Cal AI, the AI-powered calorie-tracking app built by young founders. The company says Cal AI will remain a standalone product and receive investment in product development and marketing. TechCrunch reported that the deal closed in December 2025 and that Cal AI had been connected to MyFitnessPal’s nutrition database.
What happened, and when?
MyFitnessPal publicly announced the acquisition on March 2, 2026. TechCrunch reported that the transaction closed in December 2025. Neither the announcement nor TechCrunch’s report disclosed the purchase price or other deal terms.
MyFitnessPal framed the acquisition as bringing together products for people with different nutrition goals and tracking preferences. CEO Mike Fisher said, “People come to nutrition with different goals and different levels of experience, and they need tools that meet them where they are.” MyFitnessPal’s announcement presents Cal AI as an AI-powered nutrition app with a distinct, performance-oriented audience.

According to MyFitnessPal, Cal AI will continue as a standalone product, with investment in product development and marketing. That is the company’s announced plan; it is not a guarantee that the product will remain unchanged or available indefinitely.

TechCrunch reported that Cal AI had been integrated with MyFitnessPal’s nutrition database by the time of the announcement. That reported database connection does not establish that the two apps have merged. MyFitnessPal described Cal AI as remaining standalone.
What could the acquisition mean for users?
For users, the immediate takeaway is that MyFitnessPal has announced continued development of Cal AI as its own product, while TechCrunch reported a connection to MyFitnessPal’s food database. The announcement does not specify changes to app features, subscriptions, accounts, data handling, or whether users will need to take any action.

The two products are presented as options for different tracking preferences, not as a tested ranking of which app is better:
- Cal AI: emphasizes AI-assisted photo logging.
- MyFitnessPal: is associated with database-led nutrition tracking. TechCrunch reported that its database included 20 million foods, 68,500 brands, and meals from more than 380 restaurant chains; those are figures reported in that article, not independent measurements.
The distinction may matter to people choosing how much detail they want to enter and how they prefer to track. MyFitnessPal described the products as complementary, with different audiences and fitness goals; that characterization comes from the company, rather than an independent comparison.

What was Cal AI’s reported scale?
The two published revenue figures use different wording and should not be treated as interchangeable. In MyFitnessPal’s announcement, Cal AI CEO and co-founder Zach Yadegari said the app generated “over $40 million in sales in the last 12 months.” TechCrunch separately reported annual revenue above $30 million. The figures are attributed statements, and the available reporting does not explain the difference.
TechCrunch also reported more than 15 million downloads. That is a historical figure from its 2026 coverage, not a current download count.

- The acquisition price and other deal terms were not disclosed in the reviewed reporting.
- MyFitnessPal has not specified a detailed product roadmap or timeline for changes.

- The reported revenue figures have different definitions and amounts; no explanation reconciling them was provided.
