Mycelium can sense and respond to its environment, and experiments show that a living fungal colony can transform signals in ways that support simple logical circuits. That makes fungal networks intriguing examples of distributed biological information processing—and a possible source of ideas for unconventional computing. It does not show that fungi think like people, are conscious, or possess artificial general intelligence (AGI).

What does it mean to call mycelium intelligent?

Mycelium is the network of fine fungal filaments called hyphae. A colony’s activity is distributed across those interconnected structures: local cells respond to conditions, while growth and signaling can produce effects across the network. A review by Boddy and co-authors (2017) describes this connection between local activity and colony-scale behavior.

Calling such behavior “intelligence” depends on what the word means. In a broad, functional sense, it can refer to sensing information, integrating signals, adapting responses, or making choices that help an organism persist. In that sense, reviews of fungal behavior discuss sensory abilities, learning, memory, decision-making, and neural-like electrical spikes. Those descriptions do not by themselves imply a mind with human-like understanding or subjective experience.

The distinction matters because the same word is often used for different things: a biological ability to respond adaptively, a computer system’s measured performance on tasks, and a claim about conscious thought. Evidence for one does not automatically establish the others.

How does a fungal network process information?

Fungi use electrical and chemical signals, alongside changes in the shape and growth of the mycelium. These processes can carry and alter information across a living network. The system is not a fixed wire diagram: its structure grows, changes, and responds to conditions.

In the 2022 Springer paper Logics in Fungal Mycelium Networks, researchers used a real Aspergillus niger colony to demonstrate nonlinear signal transformations and logical gates or circuits. The authors describe the living networks as capable of “efficient sensorial fusion over very large areas and distributed decision making.” This is evidence that fungal material can be used to implement specific information-processing operations under experimental conditions—not evidence that a whole fungus is a general-purpose computer.

Electrical spikes are one part of this picture, not a direct translation of neuron firing. Fungal signals arise in a different living substrate and operate alongside chemical cues and morphological change. A voltage pattern may be useful to measure or encode in an experiment without having the same biological meaning as a neural signal in an animal.

Is mycelium a natural neural network?

It is a useful analogy, but not a literal equivalence. Both fungal networks and artificial neural networks can be discussed in terms of distributed components, signals, and information processing. Their materials, organization, and evidence of capability are substantially different.

Comparison Fungal mycelium Artificial neural network
Substrate Living hyphae, with biochemical and electrical signaling. Computational hardware carrying out numerical operations.
Organization A growing, decentralized network whose structure can change. Designed layers and parameters, typically adjusted through a training procedure.
Signals Electrical activity, chemical cues, and morphological changes. Numerical activations passed through weighted connections; training commonly adjusts parameters using gradients.
Evidence of learning or capability Behavioral observations and experiments on fungal responses and signal processing. Performance measured on specified tasks or benchmarks.
Generality Demonstrated operations and responses in particular biological or experimental settings. Capabilities depend on the model and tasks; whether any system qualifies as AGI remains unsettled.

The comparison is useful for asking how computation might be distributed across a changing physical network. It becomes misleading if “neural network” is taken to mean that hyphae are neurons, that fungi use backpropagation, or that biological signal processing is equivalent to the mathematics and training methods used in modern machine-learning systems.

What have fungal-computing experiments actually shown?

The strongest claim supported by the cited experiments is specific: fungal networks can participate in measurable signal processing, including nonlinear transformations and logical operations. Researchers can apply inputs, record electrical responses, and investigate whether those responses implement a circuit-like function.

That is a meaningful result for unconventional computing, where the aim is to explore information processing in materials or systems other than conventional electronic processors. But a demonstration of a gate or circuit is not the same as showing that a colony can perform arbitrary computations, learn a broad range of tasks, or reason generally. The experiment’s operation, conditions, and interpretation matter.

The 2018 Royal Society paper Towards fungal computer proposes a compact architecture: “information is represented by spikes of electrical activity, a computation is implemented in a mycelium network and an interface is realized via fruit bodies.” This is a proposal for thinking about a fungal-computing system, not proof that fruit bodies already function as a practical computer interface.

Does fungal information processing mean fungi are conscious?

No such conclusion follows from the evidence described here. Detecting signals, responding to stimuli, or showing behavior interpreted as learning or decision-making does not establish subjective experience—the presence of something it is like to be that organism. Consciousness in fungi remains a debated interpretation rather than a demonstrated result.

The 2023 bioRxiv record for Fungal States of Minds is a 14-page preprint that reflects the continuing discussion around fungal minds; its existence is not a settled verdict on consciousness. A careful account can take fungal behavior seriously without treating a metaphor, a signal pattern, or a functional capability as proof of a conscious point of view.

What can mycelium contribute to thinking about AGI?

AGI—artificial general intelligence—is a future-oriented and unsettled concept, not a capability established by the fungal-computing experiments described above. The experiments do not show human-like reasoning, language, backpropagation, subjective experience, or artificial general intelligence in a fungus.

The more defensible connection is as analogy, inspiration, and an open research question. Mycelium offers a biological example of distributed sensing, local response, and network-wide behavior in a system that changes as it grows. Researchers can ask whether some of those properties suggest new ways to build or study computing systems. That question is different from claiming that a fungus is already an AGI system.

The 2026 article Symbiotic Intelligence: Rethinking AI with Mycelium, published in Arts, signals a broader conceptual interest in the relationship between AI and mycelial systems. A conceptual reframing can be valuable for generating questions; it should not be confused with an experimental demonstration of general intelligence.

Where is the practical research opportunity?

The clearest near-term direction suggested by this work is research into fungal bioelectronics and unconventional computing: growing or preparing fungal networks, connecting electrodes, collecting signals, and testing whether a defined sensing or computational task can be performed reproducibly. These projects require experimental instrumentation and careful interpretation of biological signals.

For technology readers, the promising idea is not that fungi are a drop-in replacement for silicon processors. It is that living networks may offer unusual ways to explore distributed sensing and computation. Whether those approaches become reliable or useful technologies is an open engineering question; the cited findings establish neither commercial readiness nor a route to AGI.
