A smart TV can have a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port even when its Wi-Fi connection is faster. That is model-specific, not a rule for every TV. In most cases, a 100 Mbps wired link is already enough for streaming; if you need faster wired networking, first check which device is running the app and whether it supports Gigabit Ethernet.
Why can a TV’s Ethernet be slower than its Wi-Fi?
Ethernet and Wi-Fi are separate network interfaces, and their capabilities depend on the TV’s hardware. For example, Samsung’s support documentation describes a 10/100 Mbps LAN connection on covered models, while noting that wired networking is unavailable on some models. Samsung also says setup and supported connections can vary by model. These pages do not establish the port speed on other TVs—or on every Samsung TV. Check the official specifications or manual for your exact model and region: Samsung Philippines’ network setup guidance and Samsung Singapore’s setup guidance.
If the wired link negotiates at 100 Mbps, that may simply be the port’s limit rather than a fault. To check, look for a link-rate indicator in the TV’s network settings or your router’s connected-device interface, if available. A speed-test app can be a rough clue, but its result may also be limited by the app, the TV’s processor, or the test server.

Will a 100 Mbps port limit streaming?
Usually, the port’s maximum speed is not the same as the bandwidth a particular stream needs. Roku Support says, “Streaming high-resolution content (like 4K HDR movies with Dolby Atmos) typically requires no more than 25 Mbps.” That is general guidance from Roku, not a universal ceiling for every service, stream, or local-media setup. On that stated workload, a 100 Mbps link provides substantial headroom. Roku’s wired-network and USB-adapter guidance.

For local media, check the actual file bitrate and the entire route between the media server and playback device. A stream’s requirements can differ from Roku’s estimate, and the TV’s port is only one part of that path.
Is Wi-Fi actually faster or better in your room?
It can be faster in a particular home if the TV’s Wi-Fi achieves more throughput than its Ethernet port. But a “Gigabit” result on Wi-Fi is not guaranteed by the TV or broadband plan alone: router capability, signal strength, distance, interference, and device performance all affect what reaches the TV. Wi-Fi can also be less consistent than a wired connection. Compare the actual throughput and stability at the TV, rather than assuming either connection will always win.

- Choose Ethernet when a stable connection matters and the wired link meets the needs of the app or media you use.
- Choose Wi-Fi when it performs well at the TV and avoids a slower built-in wired port or awkward cabling.
- Investigate further when playback stutters: consider the actual workload, link rate, signal conditions, and the full network path before blaming the port.
How to get faster wired networking
Use an external streamer with Gigabit Ethernet
A separate streaming device can provide a faster wired connection for apps that run on that device. Apple lists Gigabit Ethernet on the Apple TV 4K Wi-Fi + Ethernet model in its technical specifications. This does not upgrade the TV’s built-in port: apps launched on the TV still use the TV’s own network hardware. Use the external device’s apps and interface if you want its wired connection to handle streaming.

A USB adapter is not a universal way to add Gigabit Ethernet to a TV. Roku’s instructions identify specific compatible adapters and chipsets for specified Roku players, recommend 10/100 Mbps adapters for those devices, and say adapters that also support 1000 Mbps will not work with them. Those rules apply to the covered Roku devices; they do not establish compatibility with an unspecified TV.

What to check before deciding the port is the problem
- Find the full model number and region. Use the TV’s settings or its label, then consult the manufacturer’s official specifications or manual for that exact version.
- Check the negotiated Ethernet rate. Look in the TV’s network information or the router’s connected-device interface, if either exposes it.
- Measure the connection at the TV. Treat an app-based speed test as an estimate because the app, TV processor, or test server may constrain the result.
- Match the connection to the workload. For streaming, consider the service’s requirements; for local playback, check the file bitrate and every link between server and TV.
- Choose the fix based on where the app runs. A supported adapter or external streamer helps only when it is compatible and the playback app uses that device’s connection.
