If your phone reports only 2GB free but you suspect messaging media is taking up far more space, shared storage is a sensible place to look. One reported case describes 9GB of WhatsApp media on a 128GB Android phone that showed 2GB free. The method is what carries over to your device: find the files, confirm what they are, and only then decide what to remove. The exact folder and the size you find will depend on your phone.
What the reported case shows
The account comes from a News Minimalist summary dated September 27, 2026, which attributes the story to a MakeUseOf article. According to that summary, a 128GB phone showed 2GB free, and roughly 9GB was found in WhatsApp media, including photos and videos the owner had sent. These are secondary figures for one phone. They do not show that every Android phone stores WhatsApp files in the same place, that your phone will show the same amount, or that deleting media will reliably recover 9GB.
The case is still useful because it separates two questions that are easy to confuse: how much space the phone reports as used, and where the largest items actually sit. Media folders are one place where large amounts can accumulate without being obvious from the main storage screen.

Android divides storage into two broad areas. App-specific storage holds files an app keeps for itself. Shared storage holds media and documents, such as photos, videos, audio and downloads, that can be reached outside one app. Android Developers’ “Data and file storage overview,” last updated October 1, 2026, explains this split and notes that exact file locations vary across devices.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

The same guide describes scoped storage, which on newer Android versions limits what apps can access, even in areas that look shared. The practical effect is that a folder can be real, large and counted in your phone’s storage total while appearing differently in an app, in a file manager, or in the phone’s storage screen. The folder is not secret so much as handled differently by each tool that looks at it.
| Storage type | What it usually holds | How you normally reach it | Caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| App-specific storage | Files an app keeps for its own use | Usually through the app itself | Do not delete files here by hand unless the app’s own settings direct you to |
| Shared storage | Photos, videos, audio and documents | Gallery, file manager, or an app that has been granted access | Access depends on the Android version and app permissions |
Phone storage is not Google Drive storage
A phone’s free-space figure measures the device’s own memory. A Google account’s storage figure measures files in that account, including backups and items stored in Google Drive. The two can both be large at once, and they are fixed in different places.

| Measure | Phone local storage | Google account storage |
|---|---|---|
| What it counts | Bytes stored on the phone itself | Bytes stored in the Google account, such as Drive files and backups |
| Can WhatsApp media affect it? | Yes, when the media is on the phone | Only if that media or a backup is stored in the account; the reported case does not establish this |
| Hidden-item explanation | Shared media may be hard to locate; app-specific data is private to the app | A Google Drive Help Community thread dated June 2, 2025 describes usage of 9GB with no visible files, attributed to hidden app data. It is a user thread, not an official explanation, and it is not evidence about the WhatsApp case |
| Where to adjust it | Phone storage settings and file management | The Google account’s storage page, managed separately from the phone |
If the number on your phone does not reconcile with what you see, first confirm which storage pool the figure belongs to. Cleanup steps for phone memory will not change a Google account quota, and the reverse is also true.

How to check your own phone
Menu labels differ by manufacturer, Android version and WhatsApp version, so treat the following as a sequence to adapt rather than a fixed set of taps.

- Record your phone model, Android version and WhatsApp version. These determine which labels and folders you should expect.
- Open the phone’s storage settings and note the total, used and free space. This is your baseline.
- Open WhatsApp and look for its storage or “Storage and data” area. Note any media size it reports. Labels vary by version.
- Open a file manager that can browse shared storage. In the reported case, the media was at Android > Media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp. That path was not independently verified, and on your phone it may be different or not visible to your file manager.
- Before deleting anything, open several files to confirm what they are. Copy any you want to keep to a location you control, such as a computer or a cloud account you manage.
- Delete only files you have identified and backed up, then return to the storage screen and compare the new free-space figure with your baseline.
Do not delete folders you do not recognise, including Android or app folders you have not identified. Removing the wrong data can break apps or remove material you meant to keep.
If the numbers still do not match
- Little free space but no large media folder appears: the storage total covers the whole device, including app data, system files and caches. Check the storage screen’s breakdown by category before assuming media is the cause.
- Google account storage is full but phone storage is not: the problem sits in the account, not on the phone. Use the Google account’s storage page rather than phone cleanup.
- Your file manager shows no WhatsApp media folder: your Android version may limit what that file manager can see. Try WhatsApp’s own storage view, or the file manager that came with your phone.
What is not established
- How common this situation is. No reliable data shows how many phones have similar media folders or how much space they typically hold.
- Whether the same folder path exists on all Android phones or versions.
- Whether 9GB is a typical amount. It is one reported case.
- Any named official statement on this issue. The Android guidance cited here is technical documentation, and it is paraphrased rather than quoted.
Android’s storage behaviour and app folder locations can change with a manufacturer’s software update or an app release, so check your own screens rather than relying on any single path.
