An old router can have a useful second act, but the right firmware and safe setup depend on its exact model and hardware revision. “Wiping” may mean clearing settings, installing different firmware, or recovering a corrupted device; those are different operations. The title does not identify the router or its new role, so this article explains how to evaluate the idea without pretending those details are known.
What “wiping the firmware” can mean
People use “wipe” to describe several different changes. Before touching a router, identify its current state and the result you want. A settings reset is not the same as replacing firmware, and neither is automatically the right fix for a router that will not boot.
- Reset configuration: Erases settings and may remove installed packages, while leaving the router’s firmware in place. This is for a configuration problem, not a firmware replacement.
- Install or reflash firmware: Replaces the software image. A clean installation generally does not preserve the old configuration; the appropriate image and procedure depend on the exact device.
- Failsafe access: Provides a limited way to reach a router after a configuration problem. It is not a repair for faulty hardware or a broken kernel.
- Recovery: A device-specific procedure for installing firmware when the router is corrupted or cannot start normally.
OpenWrt’s documentation distinguishes these reset, failsafe, and recovery paths; they are not interchangeable. See OpenWrt’s failsafe and factory-reset guide and follow the instructions for the exact device.

Check whether your exact router is supported
Firmware compatibility is not determined by brand alone. A product family can have multiple hardware revisions, and support or installation instructions may differ among them. Find the label on the router and record the complete model and hardware revision before choosing an image.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Open the OpenWrt Firmware Selector.
- Enter the full device name or model, including the hardware revision when shown on the label.
- Confirm that the result matches your actual device. Do not flash an image for a similar-looking model or a different revision.
- Review the available build type and the device-specific installation instructions before proceeding. The selector offers stable and snapshot builds; do not assume they are interchangeable or that every device has both.
OpenWrt describes itself as an extensible GNU/Linux distribution for embedded devices, commonly wireless routers. Its router-upgrade documentation is a starting point, not a substitute for the instructions for your specific hardware.
Choose one job that fits your network
A spare router can serve as a client, router, or gateway, among other possible configurations. The right choice depends on what your existing network needs; the story’s specific “one job” is not identified here.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Client or network extension
OpenWrt’s network-role guidance describes client configurations that can provide Wi-Fi or make Ethernet ports useful in a particular setup. Before choosing this role, check whether the device will connect to the main network by Wi-Fi or Ethernet and what devices need to connect to it.

Router behind an existing router
A second router connected behind your current router may create double NAT: both devices perform network address translation. OpenWrt warns that this can cause problems for some traffic scenarios. Consider the topology before installing or reconfiguring anything, especially if a device or service needs inbound connections or otherwise depends on the network layout.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Gateway
A gateway sits at a different point in the network than a client device or a downstream router. OpenWrt distinguishes these roles, but the appropriate configuration depends on which device connects to the internet and how the rest of the network is arranged. Consult the OpenWrt network-role guide and match its instructions to your intended topology.

Software cannot make an unsupported device compatible, repair faulty hardware, or establish how a particular old router will perform. The available device-selection and recovery guidance does not establish a given router’s throughput, security, reliability, or remaining service life.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Pause if you cannot confidently identify the model and hardware revision.
- Do not proceed with a firmware image unless it is identified for your exact device.
- If the router has a configuration problem, determine whether a reset or failsafe path is appropriate before attempting recovery.
- If the device is corrupted, use its model-specific recovery procedure rather than assuming an ordinary upgrade will work.
- If the device is unsupported or unsuitable for the intended role, compare alternatives only after confirming firmware compatibility.
The OpenWrt project describes the OpenWrt One as a router designed by the project and shipping with OpenWrt. That does not make it a necessary replacement for an old router; it is simply one possible device to consider if your existing hardware cannot do the job.
