A network-attached storage (NAS) device used mainly as a backup target does not have to be reachable every hour of every day. Turning it on for a scheduled backup, then shutting it down properly, can keep a copy of your files offline between backup sessions—reducing its exposure to some network-based threats. The tradeoff is that a monthly backup can leave nearly a month of recent changes uncopied.

Why a backup NAS can stay off between sessions

A NAS that serves files to people or apps throughout the day needs to be available. A NAS used chiefly as a second destination for backups has a different job: it needs to be available when the backup runs and when you need to restore files.

QNAP describes powering on a normally powered-off NAS when a backup is needed, and identifies offline backup as one part of a security strategy. A disconnected backup is less exposed to threats that reach devices over the network. CISA similarly advises disconnecting an external backup drive when it is not actively being used, because ransomware may be able to reach an attached drive. The same principle applies to a NAS only when it is genuinely disconnected or otherwise inaccessible to compromised devices.

This does not make an offline copy invulnerable: theft, physical damage, or a failed backup can still leave you without a usable restore. The backup must complete, and you should verify that you can restore from it.

What a once-a-month schedule costs you

The important question is not whether monthly power-on is inherently sensible; it is whether you can accept the amount of work that may be missing if your primary data is lost. If the NAS backs up once a month, changes made after the last successful session may not be in that copy. For active projects, business records, or frequently edited files, that gap may be unacceptable. For relatively static archives, it may be a reasonable choice if you understand and accept the risk.

Set the schedule according to how often your data changes and how much recent work you can afford to lose. CISA’s advice is to back up frequently to reduce the risk of permanent data loss; its guidance does not establish a universally safe monthly interval. Consider a shorter interval, or another backup destination, for data that changes often.

Choose a backup arrangement you can actually restore

A powered-off NAS is one way to keep a backup less exposed, but it is not the only option. Compare arrangements by how isolated the copy is, how much recent data it may be missing, whether the backup process works reliably, and how quickly you can retrieve files.

Backup arrangement Isolation between sessions Cadence and recovery point Availability and restore considerations
NAS powered on for scheduled backups Can be offline between sessions if it is shut down or disconnected from the network. Depends on the schedule; a monthly run can leave up to nearly a month of changes uncopied. Confirm that scheduled power-on, backup, and shutdown work with your specific NAS and network. Test a restore.
External drive disconnected between backups CISA advises disconnecting the drive when it is not actively being used for backups. Depends on how often you connect it and run backups. Keep it safely stored and confirm you can read its contents and restore files.
Vetted cloud backup Whether it is isolated from a compromised device depends on the service and account setup; the sources cited here do not establish a universal configuration. Depends on the service’s backup schedule and settings. Check what is backed up, how restoration works, and whether you can retrieve files when needed.

Shut the NAS down deliberately, not by cutting power

A planned software shutdown and an abrupt power loss are not equivalent. QNAP warns that sudden power loss can prevent data from being saved safely and may cause data loss or file-system corruption. Use the NAS’s normal shutdown process; do not treat switching off a power strip or unplugging the unit as a routine shutdown method.

For protection against outages while the NAS is running, QNAP recommends a compatible uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and configuring automatic shutdown when power is lost. Synology says its UPS feature can give the NAS time to save data and unmount volumes, while noting that power-off behavior varies by UPS brand and model. Check compatibility for your exact NAS and UPS, configure the settings, and test the behavior rather than assuming every combination works alike.

Automation depends on your NAS and setup

Some systems offer power-management features, but availability and steps vary. Synology DSM 7 documentation describes setting drive idle time before hibernation and optionally powering off the NAS after its internal drives hibernate. It also says Wake on LAN must be enabled to turn on a supported NAS remotely later. Drive hibernation is not the same as a full shutdown, so check what a setting actually does before relying on it for offline protection. For other brands or software versions, consult the documentation for your own model.

Before relying on a scheduled monthly session, confirm that the NAS starts when expected, the backup job finishes, and the unit shuts down cleanly. Then try restoring a file. A schedule that runs but does not produce a usable backup is not protection.

Does powering it on and off shorten drive life?

QNAP’s March 30, 2026 article, updated on its page August 24, 2026, states that frequent power cycling does not affect NAS hardware lifespan when shutdowns are performed correctly. That is the manufacturer’s guidance, not an independent quantified comparison of monthly cycling and continuous operation. The sources available here do not establish that monthly cycling extends drive life, nor do they establish a universally best schedule.
