An expansion card can slow a NAS scrub if it limits the storage path, but a long scrub alone does not prove the card is at fault. On a ZFS system, check the pool’s live status, trace how each drive connects, and compare the controller’s operating mode and bandwidth with the rest of the system before changing hardware.

Why an all-day scrub does not identify the cause

A ZFS scrub reads pool data to check its integrity and, when redundancy allows, repair detected damage. It is disk-intensive and can reduce performance while running, as the FreeBSD Handbook explains. How long it takes depends on the storage workload and configuration; duration by itself does not establish that an expansion card is defective.

A controller is a reasonable place to investigate, not a diagnosis. OpenZFS recommends a host bus adapter (HBA) rather than a RAID controller for ZFS, citing performance and reliability. That is general selection guidance, not proof about any particular card or system. If your NAS uses a filesystem or vendor stack other than ZFS, do not assume ZFS-specific advice or commands apply.

Start with the pool’s live scrub status

On a ZFS NAS, capture zpool status while the scrub is running. Record the scanned and issued amounts, their rates, the progress and remaining-time estimate, and any errors. The FreeBSD Handbook’s example output includes these fields; its sample numbers illustrate the command, not a target speed.

GLOTRENDS SA3026C 6 Port PCIe SATA Expansion Card, SATA III 6Gbps, ASM1166
  • 6-PORT SATA EXPANSION CARD: Adds 6 SATA III (6Gbps) drives to your desktop at once, turning one PCIe x4 slot into a 6-bay storage pool for unRAID, TrueNAS, ZFS, Proxmox or Windows Storage Spaces software RAID. Hardware RAID is not supported.
  • 277MB/S ON EVERY PORT: PCIe 3.0 X2 upstream runs at 16GT/s, and each of the 6 SATA ports delivers up to 277MB/s, so large multi-drive transfers, media libraries and backup jobs finish fast with no bottleneck.
  • NO DRIVER, WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Plug and play on Windows (except XP), Mac OS, Linux and NAS systems. Set SATA mode to AHCI in BIOS or UEFI before first install. This is a data storage HBA and does not boot an operating system.
  • 6 BUILT-IN LED INDICATORS: A steady red LED means the drive is powered, a flashing LED means it is reading or writing, so you can check every SATA drive at a glance without opening the case.
  • FITS X4/X8/X16 SLOTS, FULL KIT INCLUDED: Ships with 6 x SATA III cables (350mm/13.5in), a 1:5 SATA power splitter cable, and both a 12cm regular and an 8cm low-profile bracket for any PC or NAS case.
  • Is progress continuing? Compare successive status outputs. A changing scanned amount indicates work is advancing; a long estimate alone does not establish a hardware fault.
  • Are errors reported? Note the pool state and error details. Treat them as evidence to investigate, rather than attributing them automatically to the controller.
  • What rate is shown? Save the observed scan and issue rates along with the timestamp and workload context. An ETA is an estimate that can change as conditions change.

Keep the full output so you can compare like with like later. Do not compare one pool’s rate with another system’s or treat a handbook example as a benchmark.

Trace the route from each drive to the NAS

Map how the disks connect: motherboard SATA ports, an HBA, a backplane, an expander, or another controller. The card may be only one link in a path that also includes a PCIe slot, cabling, backplane, and platform driver. OpenZFS’s hardware guidance emphasizes platform support and per-port bandwidth, and cautions against hardware RAID for ZFS.

Check whether the operating system supports the controller and whether it exposes the drives appropriately. OpenZFS notes limitations with USB adapters; a USB-connected disk path should not be treated as equivalent to a directly supported HBA. TrueNAS’s hardware guide discusses HBA, passthrough, or JBOD modes for supported hardware RAID cards, with caveats. Those modes and caveats are not interchangeable across all cards or NAS platforms.

Check the card’s mode, link, and bandwidth

Compare the card’s negotiated PCIe link and available per-port capacity with the drives and other links in the path. Also verify that the card is in a mode supported by your NAS software and that the system sees the individual drives as intended. OpenZFS’s HBA recommendation and TrueNAS’s controller-mode guidance make these useful checks; neither source establishes that an expansion card is the only possible bottleneck.

  • 【4 Port SATA PCIE 3.0 Card】The PCIE SATA card allows you to add 4 SATA 3.0 6Gbps devices to your computer. If your motherboard has RAID function, you could make a RAID with this SATA Card. (WARM TIPS: Can not Support Hardware RAID)
  • 【Powerful Chipest】This SATA controller card adopts Marvell 88SE9215 chip, making this card more stable and compatible. Port Multiplier FIS-based and Command-based switching supported.
  • 【Advance Heatsink】The SATA card uses heat sink technology to disperse heat away from the core components to improve reliability and performance.

  • Confirm the card model, firmware, driver, and supported operating-system configuration.
  • Check the actual PCIe slot and link in use, rather than assuming the slot’s maximum specification is available to the card.
  • Account for attached ports, any expander or backplane, cabling, drive capabilities, and other traffic sharing the path.
  • Look for constraints elsewhere in the storage path or concurrent workload before deciding the card is responsible.

The supplied facts do not identify your card, NAS platform, drive count, pool layout, or link details, so they cannot support a specific replacement recommendation. Select hardware only after identifying a measured constraint and verifying compatibility with the exact system.

Make a change measurable

If you change a controller or its configuration, preserve enough detail to tell whether the result is comparable. Log the exact card and firmware, controller mode, PCIe slot and link, cabling and topology, pool state, scrub status, and workload conditions before and after. A before-and-after observation can support a diagnosis, but call it a controlled test only if conditions were actually controlled.

In the account behind this headline, the card can be called the cause only if the documented observations support that conclusion. Without those details, the sound reader-facing conclusion is that the controller path was investigated as a plausible bottleneck—not that expansion cards generally make scrubs slow.

Do not mask a path problem with scheduler tuning

OpenZFS documents that the ZIO scheduler balances scrub I/O against other classes of I/O. Changing scheduler parameters can trade scrub progress against interactive workload behavior; it does not establish or remove a hardware or topology constraint. See the OpenZFS ZIO Scheduler documentation before considering scheduler changes. For details on ZFS properties and behavior, consult the OpenZFS zfs.4 manual.
