Two built-in Google Photos controls can make a crowded library easier to browse: photo stacks group near-identical shots, and Hide clutter keeps selected content from other apps out of the main Photos view. Neither removes files or frees storage. For individual pictures you want out of sight but still findable, Archive is another option.
1. Turn similar photos into stacks
When you take several nearly identical pictures of the same subject in a short period, Google Photos can group them into a stack. Instead of seeing every shot separately in the Photos view, you see a compact group with a suggested top pick. You can open the stack to inspect the other images and choose a different top pick if Google’s suggestion is not your favorite.
Stacks are available in the Google Photos app for backed-up photos. To enable them, open the relevant More menu in the Photos view and turn on Stack similar photos. Google says newly taken photos can take some time to organize into stacks. See Google’s Organize your Photos view instructions for the current Android workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore choosing an action on a stack, open it and check which photos are selected. In particular, review the items before using Keep this, delete rest. When sharing a stack or adding it to an album or animation, confirm whether the action applies to the selected top pick or includes the full stack.

Stacks change how photos appear; they do not merge or remove the originals. Google explicitly says stacking does not change available storage.
2. Hide clutter from other apps
Screenshots, GIFs, memes, and other pictures saved by apps can crowd the Photos view. On Android, Google Photos provides Show content from other apps controls. From there, choose Hide clutter or customize visibility for individual apps, depending on what you want to see. Google documents the controls in its Photos view organization help.

This is a visibility setting, not a cleanup or deletion tool: the content remains on your device or in your library as applicable, and hiding it does not free Google account storage. Menu names and available controls can vary by platform; the detailed hide-clutter options described here are for Android. Check the instructions for your specific device rather than assuming the same taps apply on iPhone or iPad.
When to use Archive instead
Archive suits individual pictures you want out of the main Photos view without losing access to them. For example, you might archive a document or a reference photo that you do not need to see among everyday pictures. Archived items remain in albums they were added to, in search results, and in device folders; they are not used for highlight videos or animations. They continue to count toward storage. Follow Google’s Archive instructions to move selected photos out of the main view.

If the real problem is running out of storage
Stacks, hiding app content, and Archive organize what you see; none of them reduces your Google account’s storage use. For quota issues, use Google Photos’ storage-management workflow, which can surface recommendations such as large photos and videos. Review each item before deleting it. Google’s Manage your storage guidance explains the cleanup options and storage rules.
Deletion is different from hiding or archiving. With backup turned on, deleting a photo or video in Google Photos can also remove copies from supported devices and albums. Deleted items stay in Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion; after that, they cannot be restored. Some deletions may not save quota, so Google may estimate the space recovered. Read Google’s deletion guidance and check your selections before deleting in bulk.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Storage treatment also depends on upload quality and date. Google says Storage saver and Express uploads from before June 1, 2021 do not count toward account storage, while Original quality uploads count regardless of date. The cutoff applies to those specified upload qualities; it is not a general exemption for every older photo.
Keep documents out of the everyday photo stream
If documents are a major source of visual clutter, Google Photos can sort backed-up documents into albums such as ID, receipts, and event information. In the computer workflow Google documents, you can also enable auto-archive so document photos older than 30 days leave the Photos view while remaining in document albums. See Sort your documents into useful albums for those options.
