In the first fight tutorial of Void Parry, the R prompt appeared while a bullet was still too far away for the reflect effect to last until impact. Pressing R as soon as the prompt appeared often failed, and the lesson could run to its 25-second timeout. The bug was a timing mismatch between prompt placement, projectile travel, effect duration, and cooldown—not a keyboard that ignored input.
Why pressing R at the prompt failed
In the author’s reported game build, the prompt appeared when the incoming bullet was 115 pixels away. The reflect bubble reached 28 pixels beyond its origin, plus the bullet’s radius—about 39 pixels in total. That left roughly 76 pixels for the bullet to travel before it could be reflected.
Bullet time reduced the projectile’s speed from 150 pixels per second to 35% of that, or about 52 pixels per second. At that speed, the remaining 76 pixels took roughly 1.5 seconds of real time to cover.
The reflect bubble lasted 0.28 seconds of game time. Because the world was slowed, that amounted to approximately 0.8 seconds of real time—far short of the bullet’s travel time from the prompt. The bubble expired before the bullet arrived.

A 0.9-second game-time cooldown made the failure harder to recover from. During bullet time, that cooldown was approximately 2.6 seconds in real time, so another immediate press of R could not create a fresh bubble in time. The lesson could therefore teach a new player that “the button doesn’t work,” as the author, Nightdrive Labs, put it in the DEV Community article.
What the reported fix changed
The author changed the tutorial lesson only: reflect duration was multiplied by three, and the cooldown was set to 0.25 seconds. In the author’s account, pressing R as soon as the prompt appeared then caught the bullet, and the lesson ended three to five seconds into the game instead of timing out.

That is a reported fix for this game build, not evidence that those settings are suitable for other games. The important adjustment was to make the prompt’s timing line up with when the effect could actually reach the projectile.
How a bot test exposed the mismatch
The author used Playwright in headless Chrome to play the real game with keyboard presses, rather than calling game functions directly. The test began with a fresh player and empty local storage. It checked that the lesson ended before 20 seconds, that fight one was won within 35 to 150 seconds, and that at least eight bullets were on screen after the lesson.

The test caught the tutorial mismatch that the author’s own playtesting had missed. It also revealed a separate problem: the bot was clumsy enough to die four times in the first fight. The author then tuned that fight using numbers rather than feel. The bot test was useful not because it played like a person, but because it repeated the same input sequence and checked whether the game reached defined outcomes.

The Void Parry example suggests a practical timing check for tutorials that ask a player to react to a moving target. This is analysis based on the reported case, not a set of tests reported by the author.

- Measure the gap at the prompt. Record the projectile’s distance when the instruction appears and the distance at which the ability can affect it.
- Calculate travel time. Divide the remaining distance by the projectile’s speed. Use the speed after any slow-motion effect has been applied.
- Compare effect lifetime in real time. Check how long the ability remains active after the player presses the key. If the game slows its world clock, determine whether the ability timer slows too.
- Include cooldown and retry timing. A failed first press may be unrecoverable if the cooldown prevents another attempt before the projectile passes.
- Test the prompt moment with actual input. Start from a fresh player state and press the indicated key as soon as the prompt appears. Verify that the lesson completes, rather than relying on a later press or a developer-only function call.
When an ability’s duration is measured in game time but projectile motion is slowed as well, both clocks matter. A duration that sounds adequate in seconds may translate into a much shorter or longer real-time window under slow motion. Check the game’s actual timer behavior instead of assuming that every timer follows the same clock.
