If your Android phone supports USB-C audio and your USB-C headphones already fit your routine, there is no reason you have to use its 3.5 mm jack. The jack is still a practical fallback for conventional wired headphones: it offers a direct connection without using the USB-C port or adding an adapter. Neither connection is inherently better-sounding in every phone and headphone combination.
What changes between USB-C audio and a headphone jack?
A 3.5 mm jack carries analog audio to conventional wired headphones. USB-C audio sends digital audio over the phone’s USB connection, so the signal must be converted to analog before ordinary headphone drivers can reproduce it. The conversion can happen in USB-C headphones or in a compatible adapter. Android’s USB digital audio documentation describes the digital audio path.
That difference does not establish a universal sound-quality winner. What you hear depends on the phone, headphones, and audio implementation; the Android documentation explains the signal paths, not that one connection always sounds better.

When USB-C audio is enough
USB-C audio is a sensible everyday choice if your phone supports it and you have compatible USB-C headphones or a suitable adapter. It can also suit someone who simply prefers using one connection for their wired audio accessories. Android’s USB headset specification covers stereo output and function buttons, and recommends a microphone as an optional feature. That specification does not guarantee that every headset’s microphone or controls will work with every phone.

What the 3.5 mm jack still does
The built-in jack lets you plug in conventional 3.5 mm headphones directly, without making the USB-C port the headphone connection or carrying an adapter. That can be useful if you already own wired headphones, want to connect them while USB-C is in use, or prefer not to depend on a separate accessory. If none of those situations matters to you, leaving the jack unused is a reasonable preference.
Can you use 3.5 mm headphones through USB-C?
Usually, the relevant accessory is a USB-C-to-3.5 mm headphone adapter with a DAC—a digital-to-analog converter. Android’s adapter specification describes digital conversion for connecting analog accessories and says analog-only adapters are not supported. The phone must also support USB audio. A USB-C plug by itself does not prove that it does, and not every adapter works with every Android phone.

How to check an adapter before relying on it
- Verify the phone: Confirm USB audio support in the manufacturer’s documentation for your exact model.
- Choose the right adapter type: Look for a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with a DAC, rather than an analog-only adapter.
- Check the features you need: If you depend on a headset microphone or inline controls, verify their compatibility for your phone and adapter combination; support is not universal.
- Treat test lists as guidance, not endorsements: Android’s USB audio CTS Verifier page provides test guidance and example adapters, but Android says it does not take responsibility for or endorse the listed products. It also warns about products falsely claiming to be Google-made.
