Lowering an alert threshold can make it fire more often, but it cannot create events that never happened. In a case study published on September 24, 2025, Juan Camilo Auriti reported that an alert fired seven times across 1,963 consecutive-report pairs—a 0.36% fire rate. The rule was too strict, yet only 6.2% of pairs showed any score decline at all. That underlying frequency limited how much threshold tuning could help.
What the alert was measuring
A score-degradation alert is meant to notify someone when a monitored score falls. In Auriti’s system, each decision concerned a pair of consecutive reports for the same domain. The deployed rule required both a total-score decline of at least five points and a decline of at least three points in one or more categories.
Auriti says those thresholds were chosen intuitively, not derived from historical data. Four months after shipping the alert, he checked its behavior and reported seven firings across 1,963 pairs. Those are figures from the author’s account, not independently audited results.

Why the low fire rate did not tell the whole story
A 0.36% fire rate can suggest that a threshold is too strict, but it does not reveal how often the underlying signal moves in the monitored direction. If scores rarely decline at all, relaxing the rule may recover some missed events while leaving the alert quiet most of the time.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
In this dataset, Auriti reported that 6.2% of report pairs had a decline of any magnitude. That figure is the maximum possible rate for an alert that fires only on score declines in these pairs: even a rule that triggered on every decline could not fire on more than those observations. It is not a general benchmark, and it does not mean thresholds never matter. It bounds the potential for this particular signal, direction, and dataset.
How to backtest the alert’s actual decision
Compare consecutive reports for the same entity
The backtest should match the unit the alert evaluates. Here, that means comparing each report with the previous report for the same domain—not with the previous row in the entire table. Auriti’s example uses SQL’s LAG window function, partitioned by domain and ordered by report creation time:

LAG(score) OVER (PARTITION BY domain_id ORDER BY created_at)
The PARTITION BY domain_id clause keeps one domain’s history separate from another’s. Without it, the previous row could belong to a different customer, producing score changes unrelated to any alert decision.

A useful backtest reports how many consecutive pairs meet several decline sizes—such as at least one, three, or five points—and what share have any decline. The first counts show how the firing rate changes as the threshold moves; the any-decline count estimates the ceiling for an alert that depends on declines. In Auriti’s account, the reported any-decline share was 6.2%, compared with the deployed alert’s 0.36% firing rate.

What to do with the result
If many observations move in the monitored direction
When declines are common but the alert rarely fires, threshold tuning may have meaningful upside. Test candidate rules against historical report pairs, including the original requirement that the total score and at least one category cross their respective cutoffs. Compare resulting firing rates and check that the revised rule still identifies changes worth a notification.
If the signal rarely moves
When few observations move at all, lowering the threshold has a hard limit. Consider whether another signal better captures changes users care about. Auriti suggests possibilities with more week-to-week variation, including competitor position, citation presence, or crawler arrivals in logs. These are candidate signals, not guarantees that a different alert will be more useful.

A quiet alert can also be made useful through product design: communicate clearly when monitoring finds no change, rather than treating the absence of a notification as a failure. That does not increase the signal’s frequency, but it can make the monitoring experience more reassuring.

Auriti’s case supports a practical diagnostic: measure both the current firing rate and the share of the alert’s decision units that move in the monitored direction at any magnitude. The first shows what the existing rule does; the second indicates how much room threshold changes might have.

The numbers describe one system and one dataset. The case study does not provide an independent replication or a broader benchmark for alerting systems. Its lesson is not that thresholds are irrelevant, but that threshold tuning and signal frequency are separate questions—and a low fire rate answers neither by itself.
