MX Player did launch a free, ad-supported streaming service in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Nepal on March 26, 2020. The international service offered licensed movies, television, web series, sports and news, but MX Player later discontinued its OTT services for users outside India effective August 12, 2024. It is therefore a historical launch, not a service currently available in those countries.
What MX Player launched in March 2020
Times Internet announced MX Player’s international expansion on March 26, 2020. The rollout covered seven countries:
- United States
- United Kingdom
- Canada
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Bangladesh
- Nepal
The product was an ad-supported video-on-demand service (AVOD): viewers did not pay a subscription fee, while advertising funded access to the catalog.

The catalog was described as licensed programming from partners including FilmRise, Shoreline, Screen Media, Sonar Entertainment and Tricoast. Those rights were part of the 2020 launch announcement and should not be interpreted as a current catalog or guarantee that any particular title remains available.

Was MX Player free in the US and UK?
Yes. The international product launched as a free, ad-supported service rather than a paid subscription. Advertising was the business model, so viewers could watch without a monthly fee but would encounter commercial breaks or other advertising placements.
“Free” did not mean every title was permanently available in every country. Streaming rights differ by territory, and MX Player said it would provide locally relevant licensed movies and shows in each market.

What could viewers watch?
Licensed international and local programming
MX Player promoted a catalog of more than 10,000 licensed hours at launch. Programming categories included films, television series, web series, sports and news. TechCrunch reported that the service emphasized locally relevant licensed content for each market.

The international offering initially did not include MX-produced originals. That distinguished the overseas service from MX Player’s India-focused programming strategy: international viewers were primarily being offered licensed content assembled for their local market.

Where was MX Player available?
The launch announcement listed Android and iOS apps, along with Amazon Fire TV Stick support. In practical terms, viewers could access the service through supported mobile apps and a compatible Fire TV Stick during the international rollout. Device support described in a 2020 announcement does not imply that the app still works today.
How large was MX Player at the time?

These were company-reported 2020 metrics, not current user counts or independently audited measurements. They describe the scale MX Player cited when announcing the expansion.
Does MX Player still work outside India?
No. MX Player’s official support notice says: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be discontinuing our OTT services for our users outside India effective 12 Aug 2024.” As a result, the US, UK and other international services launched in 2020 should be treated as discontinued from August 12, 2024.

The discontinuation applies to MX Player’s OTT services for users outside India. It does not establish that every MX Player product or service in India ended; availability in India is a separate matter.
What happened to the international service?
MX Player announced the withdrawal but did not, in the cited support notice, provide a detailed public explanation beyond “unforeseen circumstances.” The reliable conclusion is therefore limited: the international OTT offering was discontinued on August 12, 2024. Claims about a specific cause, a successor service or the return of the US and UK apps are not established by that notice.
