An MVNO or prepaid family plan can lower a household’s bill, but the cheapest headline price is not automatically the best value. Compare the total for your exact number of lines, coverage at the places you use your phones, data and hotspot terms, and any discounts or fees. A major-carrier postpaid plan may be worth more to a family that needs its particular data, roaming, support, or device terms; an MVNO may suit people who want lower-cost service and can bring compatible phones. Neither category is uniformly cheaper or better.

What is the difference between an MVNO and a major-carrier family plan?

An MVNO generally sells wireless service using access to another operator’s network. A major carrier sells service directly under its own brand. That distinction alone does not tell you which plan will work better: coverage depends on location, while data priority, hotspot, roaming, support, and device terms depend on the specific plan.

“Family plan” also describes an account with multiple lines, not necessarily a shared pool of data. For example, Verizon Prepaid’s family-plan FAQ says eligible lines retain individual data allowances. Check whether each line has its own allowance, whether allowances are shared, and what happens when a line reaches a limit.

Prepaid and postpaid are billing arrangements, not synonyms for MVNO and major carrier. The examples below include prepaid plans sold by major carriers as well as major-carrier postpaid offers. They illustrate why you need to compare plan terms rather than treat all prepaid plans as MVNOs or all family plans as equivalent.

How much do four lines cost in current examples?

These are examples checked in 2026, not a market-wide average or a like-for-like ranking. Prices can change, and each provider’s conditions differ. The table shows the advertised service price for four lines where available; it is not a guaranteed checkout total.

Plan example Advertised four-line service price What to check
T-Mobile Prepaid Starter Monthly $135 per month before government taxes T-Mobile’s current disclosure lists this amount for four lines and says discounts are not included. Taxes vary by location; check the plan’s data and hotspot terms.
T-Mobile Essentials 2.0 postpaid offer $120 per month This is an offer price, not a total bill. T-Mobile’s disclosure describes provider fees, surcharges, taxes, and device connection charges separately.
AT&T Value 2.0 postpaid $30 per line, or $120 for four lines AT&T’s advertised rate is after listed discounts; taxes and fees are extra, and eligibility conditions apply.
AT&T Premium 2.0 postpaid $50 per line, or $200 for four lines AT&T’s advertised rate is after listed discounts; taxes and fees are extra, and eligibility conditions apply.

The T-Mobile Prepaid Starter Monthly disclosure also lists $45 for one line, $75 for two, $105 for three, and $165 for five, before government taxes. It advertises a $40 one-line AutoPay price as well; check the current offer, payment conditions, and first-month charges rather than applying that figure to a multi-line account. Those amounts show why the cost per line changes with household size.

These products have different plan tiers, billing conditions, and potential fees, so the amounts do not establish that one provider or category is cheaper for every household. AT&T says its postpaid displayed prices depend on qualifying discounts, including AutoPay/paperless-billing qualifications. T-Mobile Prepaid distinguishes online from in-store activation fees. Verify the precise offer and checkout amount for your address and line count.

What should you compare beyond the advertised price?

Calculate the recurring bill for your household size

Use the total for the actual number of lines, not just the per-line headline. Add taxes and provider fees, activation charges, required add-ons, and any costs tied to a payment method. Separate recurring prices from introductory or limited-time offers, and check when a promotion ends. Do not assume that a four-line discount applies to two, three, five, or more lines.

Also confirm who pays and how the account is managed. AT&T Prepaid says its described multi-line discount requires enrollment, a qualifying plan costing at least $45 per month on each line, and an account owner who pays for every line; its consumer account limit is five lines. Those are eligibility mechanics, not a guarantee that a particular advertised rate remains available.

Check data allowances and congestion rules

“Unlimited” does not necessarily mean the same speed in all circumstances. Look for the amount of premium or high-speed data, what happens after any threshold, and whether the plan can be deprioritized during congestion. The FCC explains that an unlimited plan may still be subject to deprioritization after an applicable threshold. The exact threshold and treatment are plan-specific.

For one specific example, T-Mobile’s prepaid plan disclosure says: “During congestion, heavy data users (>50GB/mo.) may notice lower speeds than other customers due to data prioritization.” That statement applies to the plan disclosure where it appears; it should not be generalized to every T-Mobile plan or every MVNO.

Compare hotspot, media, and travel terms line by line

  • Hotspot: Check the allowance and speed for each line, whether hotspot use draws from a phone’s data allowance, and what happens after the allowance is used.
  • Streaming: Compare any included streaming benefit and its conditions. Count it as savings only if your household would otherwise pay for that service.
  • Roaming: Check the destinations and limits that matter to your family; a general “unlimited” label does not establish the roaming terms.
  • Perks and devices: Review upgrade benefits, device financing, and any eligibility or lock conditions separately from the monthly service price.

Test coverage where each person uses a phone

Check the carrier or plan’s coverage for each family member’s home, workplace, school, commute, and usual travel destinations. National labels cannot determine whether a signal will work in the places that matter to your household. A September 2026 UpPhone family-plan guide likewise treats coverage as a comparison factor and advises checking terms with carriers; use carrier information to confirm current plan-specific details.

Consider account flexibility and support

Before switching, find out whether you can mix plan tiers across lines, change plans without disrupting the rest of the account, and get support through the channel you prefer. A household may not need the same data allowance or features on every line. AT&T’s postpaid page describes mixing plan tiers; check its current eligibility and pricing conditions before relying on that flexibility.

When is an MVNO or prepaid family plan a better fit?

It may suit a household focused on a lower bill

Consider an MVNO or prepaid option if each member’s coverage needs are met, the plan’s data and hotspot limits are adequate, and the fully calculated total is lower. Bringing compatible phones can avoid tying the comparison to new device purchases. Confirm device compatibility and any activation requirements with the provider.

A major-carrier postpaid plan may fit specific needs better

Paying more may be reasonable if the particular plan offers a data allowance, hotspot, roaming, support, or device-upgrade terms your family will use and cannot match in the alternatives you are considering. Compare those concrete benefits with their cost; the carrier’s name alone does not establish superior value or coverage in your locations.

How to make a fair plan comparison

  1. Fix the household size. Compare the same number of phone lines and note any lines that need unusually high data or hotspot use.
  2. Check coverage. Verify service at the places each person regularly uses a phone, not just a national coverage claim.
  3. Calculate the bill. Include recurring line charges, taxes, provider fees, activation, required add-ons, payment conditions, and the end date of any promotion.
  4. Match plan features. Compare data thresholds, congestion treatment, hotspot, streaming, roaming, and any account restrictions for each line.
  5. Verify the checkout terms. Confirm the exact plan, discount eligibility, payment method, and total due with the provider before switching.

There is no defensible market-wide savings figure that establishes how much MVNO family plans save against major-carrier postpaid plans. The current prices above are provider-specific examples with different conditions; use them as prompts for a household-specific calculation, not as a universal price comparison.
