You do not need a full accessory bundle to enjoy a new Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5. Start with what you actually need: a second controller for local multiplayer, a headset for chat, more storage, easier charging, or a setup tailored to your accessibility needs. The right choices differ by platform, and some depend on your exact console model.
Choose accessories by the problem they solve
“Must-have” is personal. If you mostly play solo and have enough storage, the controller and cables included with your console may be all you need. Buy an accessory when it solves a real use case—not simply because a bundle presents several items together.
- Playing locally with someone? Consider an additional controller.
- Want private game audio or voice chat? Look for a headset compatible with your console and preferred connection method.
- Running short on storage? Choose an expansion option made for your platform, distinguishing playable storage from storage that only holds games.
- Want less charging friction? Consider a charging solution after checking the controller model it supports.
- Need a different way to control games? Explore accessibility-focused controllers and compatible input devices.
Microsoft and Sony maintain platform-specific accessory catalogs: Xbox accessories and PlayStation accessories. Check those listings for current products and compatibility before buying.

Extra controllers: useful for multiplayer or as a spare
An extra controller is a practical purchase if you expect local multiplayer or want a charged spare. It is not essential for every owner. Premium controllers are for players who want additional customization or features; they are not a requirement for ordinary play.

|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Seagate Storage Expansion Card | Xbox lists Seagate Expansion Cards in its storage category. Its catalog listing identifies sizes including 2TB and 4TB; availability can change. | Confirm current size availability and that the specific card is intended for your Xbox Series X|S. |
| PS5 | Licensed internal M.2 SSD, including WD SN850P | PlayStation’s catalog describes the WD SN850P as a licensed internal M.2 option supporting up to 8TB of expansion, with PS5 and PS4 games playable directly from it. | Verify the exact drive and console compatibility, and check current PS5 technical requirements before installation. |
| PS5 | External storage | PlayStation’s catalog says its licensed external SSD can store PS5 and PS4 games and play PS4 games directly. It does not state that PS5 games can be played directly from that external drive. | Check the drive’s supported use and the console’s USB requirements; do not treat external storage as equivalent to an internal M.2 drive. |
These capacities and capabilities are descriptions in the cited catalogs, not a comparison of measured performance. For the WD SN850P, consult Sony’s listing and current technical guidance to confirm requirements for your exact console and drive.
Charging: buy convenience only if you need it
A charging stand, dock, cable, or rechargeable-battery solution can make it easier to keep controllers ready. It solves a convenience problem; it is not a universal console deficiency. Xbox lists stands and charging solutions, while PlayStation lists chargers and cables. Match the accessory to the exact controller model and check what is included before ordering.

Xbox assistive technologies
Xbox’s catalog lists adaptive controllers and compatible switches, foot pedals, and other devices. Check the compatibility information for each device and how it connects to the controller or console.
PlayStation Access controller
Sony describes Access as a customizable controller kit for PS5, designed to help disabled players play more comfortably for longer. PlayStation’s accessories page says: “Create new ways to play with this highly customizable controller kit for PS5 consoles, designed to help those with disabilities play games more comfortably, for longer.” That is Sony product copy, not an independent assessment. Consider the player’s control needs and the kit’s compatibility details when deciding whether it is suitable.
Optional add-ons and PS5 port checks
Both catalogs include accessories beyond controllers, audio, storage, charging, and accessibility. Xbox groups items such as console wraps, mobile accessories, displays, cables and networking, wheels and joysticks, and components. PlayStation lists items including a vertical stand, cameras and remotes, specialty controllers, and a disc drive for specified slim and Pro models. These are optional; check exact model compatibility, particularly for console-specific add-ons.
PS5 USB port layouts vary by model group, so identify the console model before connecting a USB accessory. Sony’s PS5 USB ports guide says CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 models have front USB-C ports and rear USB-A SuperSpeed ports; CFI-1000 models have front USB-A and USB-C ports plus rear USB-A ports. Sony specifies that PS VR2 must connect to the designated front SuperSpeed USB-C port. For USB extended storage, Sony says to use a SuperSpeed USB port. Follow the console and accessory instructions, especially for licensed specialty peripherals.
