“Music downloader” describes two different products. Subscription apps such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music and Amazon Music let you save songs inside the app for listening without a connection, but those saved copies stay in the app. Bandcamp sells purchases that you can download as audio files, which its help center describes as DRM-free. If you need a file you can keep, back up, or move to another player, you need a purchase rather than an offline cache. If you only need music on a plane or a train, a subscription app’s offline mode is usually the simpler route.
None of the services below were installed or tested for this article. The descriptions come from each provider’s current help pages, which were reviewed in 2026. Prices, tiers, regional availability and features change, so check the provider’s page before you subscribe or buy.
Start with the outcome you want
- Offline listening in a streaming app. You want to hear a playlist or album with no signal. The music stays in the app and is managed by a subscription.
- A file you own and can move. You want an audio file to keep on your computer, back up, or load into another player. Only a purchase that the seller documents as a downloadable file meets this need.
- Music for a specific device or storage setup. You want to control where downloads are stored, such as an Android SD card, or you need to know how many songs will fit.
Offline listening inside a subscription app
These services let paying members download catalog music for offline playback. Each download is app content. None of the cited help pages describe the result as an MP3 that you can export.
Spotify Premium
Spotify’s Premium page says you can download albums, playlists and audiobooks, save downloads across up to five devices, and keep up to 10,000 downloaded songs per device. Spotify states both figures as product limits for Premium, not industry averages. You must reconnect at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active. Spotify Support says reinstalling the app or exceeding the device limit can cause downloads to disappear. According to Spotify Support, you cannot download an individual song directly in the flow described. Instead, you add the song to a playlist and download that playlist.

YouTube Music Premium
YouTube Music Help says Premium members can download songs, videos and podcasts to a mobile device. You must reconnect at least once every 30 days. The number of downloads you can keep depends on available storage, track length and audio or video quality. On Android, you can install an SD card and switch on the SD-card setting so that music saves there by default. Google notes that you cannot move existing downloads directly between internal storage and the card. After changing storage location, you must delete the downloads and download them again.
Apple Music
Apple Support describes adding Apple Music catalog items to your library and downloading songs, albums and playlists to an iPhone for offline listening. The page cited here is Apple’s UK support page, and it states that availability can vary by country or region. The cited page does not state a reconnection interval or a device limit, and it does not describe the downloads as transferable files.

Amazon Music
Amazon’s help pages separate subscription downloads from purchased music. Under eligible subscription plans, you can download songs, albums or playlists for offline listening. These subscription downloads work only inside the Amazon Music app. Amazon states that they cannot be exported to other apps or to external storage. Plan eligibility varies. The iOS help page cited here says Prime members can download All-Access Playlists, while Unlimited or Standard subscribers can download songs, albums and playlists. Purchased music follows a separate help path, and Amazon says purchased files can be downloaded locally and copied to another folder or device.

Bandcamp is the clearest fit for readers who want audio files. Bandcamp’s help center says that all audio files downloaded from Bandcamp are 100% DRM-free, which it describes as allowing fans to use and play them without any software restrictions. The statement appears in the help article dated June 5, 2026, and it is an institutional statement from Bandcamp rather than a quote from a named person. The DRM statement applies to downloads from purchases. It does not describe every page or track on the site.

Bandcamp lists four routes to a purchased download:
- The download link shown after checkout.
- The receipt email sent after purchase.
- The Collection page, when you are signed in.
- The Purchases page.
Bandcamp also points users to its mobile apps for offline listening. The help pages reviewed do not state a reconnection interval or device limit for purchased downloads.

Limits that affect offline listening
- Reconnection. Spotify and YouTube Music both require a connection at least once every 30 days to keep subscription downloads active.
- Device and count caps. Spotify’s Premium limits are 5 devices and 10,000 songs per device. Other services do not publish a comparable fixed cap in the pages reviewed, and YouTube Music’s count depends on storage.
- Storage location. On Android, YouTube Music can save to an installed SD card. Changing location means downloading again.
- Plan and region. Apple Music availability can vary by country or region, and Amazon’s offline features depend on the subscription plan.
Copyright and legal caution
A “free music downloader” does not mean every recording is legal to download. A TechRadar guide, last updated November 18, 2024, says downloading is lawful only for material that is not copyrighted or when you have permission. This is a general editorial caution, not legal advice, and copyright rules vary by country. Before you download, make sure the source is an official store, a streaming service’s offline mode, a artist’s own download page, or a free release that the rights holder has authorized.

How to choose
- You want offline listening and do not need files. Use the subscription app you already pay for. Keep the 30-day reconnection rule in mind if you travel for long periods.
- You want audio files you can keep. Buy from a seller that documents file downloads, such as Bandcamp, and store a copy in a backup location.
- You want to move music between Android apps or devices. Subscription downloads are not a substitute for purchased files. Check whether the service documents export before you rely on it.
- You are unsure whether a download is authorized. Stop and check the source before downloading.
