WIRED reports that Meta’s Muse assistant has instructions to build and update memory pages about people in a user’s life, including friends, relatives, colleagues and other contacts. The pages are described as a way to retain relationship context for future suggestions. That account is based on instructions a researcher said he extracted—not an independent verification of what Muse does for every user.
What WIRED says Muse’s memory instructions describe
In a report published October 3, 2026, WIRED said independent AI safety and security researcher Karan Joshi extracted Muse files and instructions through the chat interface and shared them with the publication. One instruction reportedly directs Muse to create a page for every person in a user’s life through an hourly process.
The reported scope is broad: family members, partners, friends, colleagues, collaborators and people a user follows. WIRED describes Muse’s memory as structured text files that may preserve relationship context and support personalized recommendations. The article does not establish that every user has connected the same services or that every person receives a detailed page.

What information could a person page contain?
According to WIRED’s account of the instructions, a page may begin with little information and accumulate sections such as Facts, History, The relationship, In common, Open threads and Strengthening. Potential entries include where someone lives or works, recurring topics, important dates, shared experiences, and ideas for reconnecting or offering support.

The instructions reportedly tell Muse to use available evidence and treat invented details as worse than leaving a page empty. That is a direction described in the files WIRED reviewed, not proof that all stored details are accurate or that the system follows the instruction consistently. The report does not quantify how often Muse makes incorrect inferences.
Why relationship memory raises privacy questions
A persistent record about a contact can be useful: it might help an assistant recall a shared plan or a detail someone mentioned. But the same mechanism can accumulate information about people who are not the account holder, including context inferred from conversations or connected services. An incorrect assumption about a person or relationship could also shape later suggestions.

Carissa Véliz, associate professor at Oxford’s Institute for Ethics in AI, told WIRED that AI systems can infer information correctly or incorrectly and piece it together from other sources. Miranda Bogen, director of the Center for Democracy and Technology’s AI Governance Lab, warned that assistants encouraging users to connect email, calendars and financial accounts can gain a much broader view of their lives. These are experts’ assessments quoted in the article, rather than findings that WIRED measured error rates or evaluated every connected source.

Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts told WIRED that useful assistants need context about users and the people they interact with. He cited examples such as remembering that an invoice sender is a plumber the user previously hired, or which flowers a spouse said they liked. That is Meta’s explanation of the intended benefit, not independent confirmation of how Muse handles each case.

WIRED also reported Meta’s descriptions of several controls: a dedicated virtual machine for each user that the company says other agents cannot access; options for users to wipe memories and disconnect external services; confirmation before some actions, such as sending email or making a purchase; and an audit log of activity and planned actions. These safeguards are attributed to Meta. The reporting does not independently test their operation or establish exactly what each control removes from stored relationship context.

- WIRED says the instructions it reviewed describe person-specific memory pages that can be updated over time.
- The described pages could include relationship history, shared interests and unresolved conversational threads, but the report does not show that every user’s pages contain all these sections.
- The files reportedly direct Muse to rely on evidence rather than fill gaps with invented details; the report does not verify system-wide compliance.
- Meta describes deletion, disconnection, isolation, confirmation and logging controls, but those claims were not independently tested in the article.
- WIRED says Muse has been downloaded by millions, without giving an exact count or measurement method.
The story therefore supports a specific concern: an assistant’s persistent memory may extend beyond what a user says about themselves to what it records or infers about people around them. It does not establish the frequency of inaccurate profiles or provide a complete, independently verified account of Muse’s production behavior.
