Magic: The Gathering’s announced booster changes add rare God Packs to Booster Packs and Collector Boosters, but they are not part of every pack and are not sold separately. Wizards of the Coast says the rollout starts with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, which it identifies as the first Magic set of 2027. The announcement was made October 5, 2026; the rates and contents below are publisher-stated plans, not independently measured pull rates.
What is changing, and when?
Beginning with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, Wizards plans to introduce God Packs across Magic Multiverse sets. It says Universes Beyond sets are expected to receive God Packs in 2028; it has not provided a more detailed schedule for individual sets. These are future rollout details, not features to assume in packs already on sale.
Play Boosters will be renamed Booster Packs. Wizards describes this as a name change, not a new product: “Play Boosters are now just called Booster Packs.” The announcement also changes foil and card-treatment contents in both product lines. Wizards says the changes will not bring a price adjustment, but that statement does not establish regional retail prices or the future price of a specific listing. Wizards gives different announced frequencies and card mixes for the two products. A God Pack is a randomly appearing pack configuration, not an item a buyer can order separately. The stated rates do not guarantee a pull from any particular number of packs.

The celebration card is additional to the listed rares and mythics. Wizards announced both rates and contents on October 5, 2026; see its booster update for details.
What else changes in Booster Packs?
- Foils are no longer guaranteed. Wizards says a changed Booster Pack will not necessarily contain a foil; when it does contain one, it will be a rare or mythic rare.
- No foil commons or uncommons. Booster Packs will no longer include foil commons or uncommons.
- Foil rare and mythic rates rise. Wizards says the drop rates for foil rares and mythics will increase, without specifying a numeric rate in the announcement.
- Japan Showcase cards can appear in the wildcard slot. Wizards plans to include these cards there in traditional foil.
What else changes in Collector Boosters?
Collector Boosters will remove two foil commons and one foil uncommon, and those three cards will not be replaced. This does not mean foil commons and uncommons disappear from the product entirely: WPN says some will remain. These changes are separate from the Collector Booster God Pack contents above. What should you do if you open a God Pack at a Limited event?
Stop and call a judge or tournament organizer. The Wizards Play Network says, “If a player opens a God Pack, they should stop and call for a judge or tournament organizer.” Its recommended handling depends on the event:
- Competitive-feeling events: WPN strongly recommends removing the God Pack from play, letting the opener keep it, and replacing it with an unopened pack from the same set at no charge so the player can continue.
- Casual events: The store may choose to leave the God Pack in the draft or sealed pool, although WPN recommends removal and replacement in most cases.
- Wizards-supplied competitive events: At events such as Regional Championships and the Pro Tour, WPN says God Packs must be removed and replaced.

Why is Wizards making the change?
Blake Rasmussen, author of the Wizards announcement, says the aim is that “Every booster you open should feel exciting and meaningful.” God Packs are one part of that stated goal; the announcement also changes foil distribution and adds Japan Showcase cards to the Booster Pack wildcard slot. The stated aim is Wizards’ explanation, not an independently established measure of player experience.
