The MSI MPG 272QRF X36 is a 27-inch, 2560 × 1440 Rapid IPS monitor with a 360Hz maximum refresh rate and G-SYNC Pulsar motion-blur reduction. It makes the most sense for competitive PC players with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics card, a DisplayPort connection, and games that can sustain high frame rates. Pulsar is its standout feature, but it is not a universal fourfold improvement: MSI’s “4x effective motion clarity” is a manufacturer claim, and DisplayNinja reports that artifacts may appear below roughly 80 FPS.

What the MSI MPG 272QRF X36 offers

MSI’s specifications describe a flat 27-inch Rapid IPS panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio, WQHD resolution (2560 × 1440), and a maximum refresh rate of 360Hz. Those figures combine a practical resolution for desktop gaming with a very high refresh ceiling, provided the source and connection can deliver it.

MSI lists a 0.5ms GtG response time marked “Min.” That is a manufacturer specification, not a typical response time measured across the panel, and it should not be treated as a guarantee of real-world pixel transitions.

Other manufacturer-listed image specifications include 400 cd/m² SDR brightness, 500 cd/m² peak HDR brightness, 1000:1 typical contrast, 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angles, and an anti-glare coating. MSI specifies 1.07 billion colors via 8-bit plus FRC, HDR Ready (HDR10), and a 1–360Hz vertical signal range. These are MSI’s stated specifications, not independent measurements of brightness, contrast, or color performance.

What G-SYNC Pulsar does—and what it needs

G-SYNC Pulsar combines variable-frequency backlight strobing with G-SYNC Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). Strobing can make moving objects appear clearer by reducing the time each image is visible, while VRR adjusts refresh timing to the game’s frame delivery. MSI presents this combination as offering “4x effective motion clarity.” That multiplier is MSI’s framing, not an independently established improvement that every viewer will perceive in every game.

According to MSI, Pulsar requires a DisplayPort connection, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU, and the feature enabled. A buyer who cannot meet those conditions can still use the monitor’s high refresh rate, but should not buy it on the assumption that Pulsar will work with any graphics card or input.

What independent testing found

DisplayNinja reports strong motion clarity in its testing and says the feature is most compelling when frame rates remain around 80–360 FPS. The reviewer warns that artifacts can appear below roughly 80 FPS, so results may be less attractive in demanding games or on a system that cannot maintain a high frame rate.

Firmware matters to the review’s findings. DisplayNinja tested FW.045 with G-SYNC Pulsar versions 1.1.8 and 1.1.10, FW.038 with 1.1.4, and FW.035 with 1.0.6. The reviewer says version 1.1.10 improved Pulsar on-time, reduced Pulsar shutoffs in high-entropy games, and improved motion-image sharpness in both Pulsar and ULMB2. The tested results do not establish which firmware a newly purchased unit will ship with.

In DisplayNinja’s tests, firmware 1.1.10 produced a measured 240Hz MPRT below 1.0ms at pulse width 50. That is a result under the reviewer’s test conditions, not the same metric as MSI’s minimum 0.5ms GtG specification.

Refresh rate, inputs, and measured latency

MSI lists one DisplayPort 1.4a (HBR3) input and two HDMI 2.1 ports. Its signal table specifies WQHD up to 360Hz over DisplayPort, but up to 120Hz over HDMI. For the full 1440p/360Hz PC mode—and for Pulsar’s stated DisplayPort requirement—plan on a compatible GPU and DisplayPort connection rather than assuming HDMI can provide the same refresh rate.

DisplayNinja measured input latency with Pulsar and ULMB2 disabled. The figures below are the reviewer’s results under its test configuration, not universal latency guarantees:

Refresh rate DisplayNinja measured latency
360Hz 2.15ms
240Hz 2.75ms
120Hz 5.14ms
60Hz 9.01ms

The latency measurements are specifically for operation with both Pulsar and ULMB2 turned off; they should not be read as measurements of those strobing modes.

Console use and other operating modes

MSI lists 1080p and 1440p console input at 60Hz or 120Hz, and states VRR support for PS5 and Xbox. This is separate from the 360Hz DisplayPort PC mode. Console buyers should therefore judge the display by its console-compatible modes rather than by its maximum PC refresh rate.

DisplayNinja describes Pulsar and ULMB2 as distinct operating modes and reports that regular VRR without strobing is also available. That gives PC users a choice between ordinary variable-refresh gameplay and a strobing mode when the game and frame rate suit it.

Ports, stand, and mounting

MSI lists three USB-A ports, a USB-B connection, and a headphone output. The stand supports height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustment, and the monitor supports 100 × 100mm VESA mounting. MSI says KVM and PIP/PBP are not supported, so the USB ports do not make this a monitor with built-in KVM switching, and it cannot display two input sources through PIP/PBP.

Who should consider it—and what to compare

This is a specialist choice for competitive PC gaming rather than an all-purpose display recommendation. Its strongest case is for a player who values very high refresh and motion clarity, has a compatible RTX GPU and DisplayPort setup for Pulsar, and can keep demanding games near the frame-rate range where the reviewer found Pulsar most compelling.

  • Frame rate: If your games routinely fall below roughly 80 FPS, the reviewer’s reported artifact warning makes Pulsar a less dependable reason to choose this model.
  • Graphics card and input: Pulsar requires an RTX GPU and DisplayPort according to MSI; HDMI is specified only up to 120Hz at WQHD.
  • Motion clarity versus image priorities: Decide whether simultaneous VRR and strobing matters more to you than other panel characteristics, including the IPS-versus-OLED trade-offs you may be considering.
  • Desk setup: Check whether the height, tilt, swivel, pivot, USB, and VESA options meet your needs, and note the lack of KVM and PIP/PBP.
  • Price and alternatives: DisplayNinja’s review page displayed a $650 price on October 5, 2026; that dated figure is not a verified live offer. The reviewer names the ASUS XG27AQNGV, AOC AG276QSG2, and Acer XB273U F5 as alternatives, but current regional prices, specifications, firmware, and stock should be checked before making a present-day comparison.
