MSI’s Kombo Strike BIOS feature was reported to improve Ryzen 7 5800X3D performance while lowering temperature and power draw in one Cinebench test. The catch: that result came from a single reported configuration, so it is not a guarantee of faster gaming or lower temperatures on your PC. Check support for your exact motherboard and BIOS before changing the setting.
What Kombo Strike does—and what is not known
Kombo Strike is an MSI BIOS feature discussed specifically for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Tom’s Hardware reported that MSI described it as a way to improve the processor’s performance. However, the publication said the feature’s exact operation was not officially known at the time of its reporting. Available sources do not establish what each level changes internally, so it would be inaccurate to equate the levels with specific Curve Optimizer values or to describe Kombo Strike definitively as an undervolt.
That distinction matters: the name and benchmark results alone do not tell you how the feature behaves on every board, BIOS, or workload. MSI’s general Click BIOS feature page describes BIOS features but does not document Kombo Strike or confirm compatibility for particular legacy boards.

What the published benchmark found
Tom’s Hardware reported a user’s Cinebench R23 results from a beta BIOS in 2022. The reported top score was 2.7% above the disabled result. These measurements describe that test, not an independently repeated comparison or an expected gain for every Ryzen 7 5800X3D system.
#1 Best Overall
- The world's fastest gaming desktop processor and first gaming processor with 3D stacking technology
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads with AMD 3D V-Cache technology
- 4.5 GHz Max Boost, 100 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on X570 and B550 motherboards
- Cooler not included, high-performance cooler recommended
| Kombo Strike setting | Reported Cinebench R23 score |
|---|---|
| Disabled | 14,641 |
| Level 1 | 14,732 |
| Level 2 | 14,961 |
| Level 3 | 15,049 |
In the same reported test context, Tom’s Hardware also described an 11°C reduction in peak temperature and 19 W lower power draw. Those are reported measurements from that setup, not guaranteed changes for other users. The report does not establish a controlled gaming comparison, so it cannot support a general claim that Kombo Strike improves gaming performance.
Why motherboard and BIOS support matter
Kombo Strike should not be assumed to exist on every MSI motherboard. The exact motherboard model and installed BIOS version determine which settings are available. The sources do not provide an authoritative current compatibility list, and MSI’s general BIOS page is not a board-by-board Kombo Strike support document.

- Powerful Gaming Performance
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 3" architecture
- 4.8 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 36 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the AMD Socket AM4 platform, with PCIe 4.0 support
- AMD Wraith Prism Cooler with RGB LED included
- Identify the full model name of your MSI motherboard and its current BIOS version.
- Open that model’s official MSI support page and review its BIOS downloads and release notes for Kombo Strike support.
- Use the BIOS instructions for your exact board; do not install a BIOS intended for another model or assume a feature shown on a different board will be present.
- If the setting is available and you choose to test it, record your baseline results first and change one setting at a time.
How to judge whether it helps your system
A fair comparison requires holding the test conditions steady. Compare the disabled setting with each available level using the same motherboard, BIOS, cooler, ambient conditions, software version, and workload. Track performance, CPU temperature, power draw, and stability rather than relying on a single score.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Use the same benchmark or game workload for each run and repeat runs consistently.
- Record temperatures and power alongside the performance result; a higher score alone does not capture the full trade-off.
- Watch for crashes, errors, or other instability after changing the setting. If problems appear, revert to the prior setting or restore the known-stable BIOS configuration.
AMD lists the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 8 cores, 16 threads, boost clock up to 4.5 GHz, and 105 W default TDP. AMD specifies a maximum operating temperature (Tjmax) of 90°C; that is the manufacturer’s limit, not a target temperature or a promise that a particular Kombo Strike level will keep the CPU cooler.

- Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
- 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
Does Kombo Strike mean you need a new cooler?
No. The cited reporting does not show that Kombo Strike requires a cooler upgrade. AMD lists the processor’s thermal solution as not included and recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance, but whether your current cooling is adequate depends on your system and workload. If temperatures warrant considering another cooler, verify AM4 socket compatibility and case clearance before choosing one.
