There is no defensible sale-price winner without the exact live listings. On the specifications available, the MSI Crosshair A16 HX has the more capable display and more SSD expansion room; the cited Katana 15 HX configuration may be the better value if it costs materially less with a comparable GPU. Check the complete SKU and price before deciding: the model names cover configurations that are not directly equivalent.
How the cited configurations compare
The available specifications cover one specific Katana SKU and the Crosshair A16 HX D8W family, not two matched retail listings. MSI’s Katana 15 HX B14WGK-251PH specification sheet and Crosshair A16 HX D8W specifications show these differences:
| Feature | Katana 15 HX B14WGK-251PH | Crosshair A16 HX D8W family |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Core i7-14650HX | Up to AMD Ryzen 9 8000 HX processors; check the exact configuration |
| Display | 15.6-inch, 2560 × 1440, 165Hz, IPS-level | 16-inch, 2560 × 1600, 240Hz, IPS-level |
| Graphics | RTX 5070 Laptop GPU, 8GB GDDR7; maximum graphics power up to 115W | RTX 5060 or RTX 5070 Laptop GPU, 8GB GDDR7; maximum graphics power up to 115W |
| Memory | 16GB (2 × 8GB); two slots, up to 96GB | Two DDR5 slots, up to 96GB; installed capacity depends on the SKU |
| Listed SSD positions | One M.2 Gen4 slot | One M.2 Gen4 slot and one M.2 Gen5-compatible slot |
The Crosshair’s screen has a higher refresh rate and 160 more vertical pixels, which can make it the more appealing choice for fast-paced games and extra workspace. The Katana’s 15.6-inch QHD panel is still a high-resolution, high-refresh display, but it does not match the Crosshair’s listed 240Hz specification. Neither refresh rate alone establishes image quality, brightness, or gaming performance.
Why the GPU and exact SKU matter more than the family name
Both listed GPU options appear at up to 115W maximum graphics power in the cited specifications, but MSI notes that graphics power can vary by scenario. A Crosshair with an RTX 5060 is not the same comparison as one with an RTX 5070, and a retailer listing must be checked for its actual GPU and power details. Do not infer that two laptops perform alike just because their family names or maximum power figures look similar.

Processor and memory configurations also vary. The cited Katana SKU has an i7-14650HX and 16GB of RAM, while the Crosshair family specification gives an upper-end processor option rather than one guaranteed CPU for every listing. Compare the installed processor, RAM, and SSD in the listings you are considering, including any upgrade cost needed to reach the capacity you want.
What independent Katana testing tells you—and what it cannot
Tom’s Guide tested a Katana 15 HX configuration with an i7-14650HX and RTX 5060, not the cited RTX 5070 SKU. In that review’s tests, it recorded a Geekbench 7 multi-core score of 16,584, took 3 minutes 24 seconds to transcode 4K video to 1080p in Handbrake, measured peak brightness at 262.2 nits, and lasted 5 hours 9 minutes in its light-use battery test. Those are results for the review unit and the publication’s methods, not guarantees for every Katana. See the Tom’s Guide Katana 15 HX B14W review.

PC Gamer’s UK review discussed an i7-14650HX, RTX 5060, 16GB configuration with a 2560 × 1440, 165Hz display and a reported £1,300 price. It also raised concerns about cooling and observed GPU power behavior. That is a review configuration and regional price, not a current offer or a result that can be directly compared with a Crosshair. The available independent testing does not establish a matched Katana-versus-Crosshair benchmark.
Are the advertised prices actually comparable?
The figures available do not confirm a live sale price for either laptop. Tom’s Guide lists Katana B14W configurations starting at $1,284 and reaching $1,999 in the US, and £1,299 to £1,799 in the UK; these are reported configuration prices, not verified active discounts. MSI’s US store lists a Crosshair A16 HX MLG Edition with a Ryzen 9 8940HX, RTX 5070, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD at $2,399.99, with a future ship date shown. That listing is not a verified sale and is not a like-for-like match with the Katana review configurations. See Tom’s Guide’s reported Katana pricing and the MSI US Store Crosshair listing.

Because the listings differ by market, GPU, processor, memory, and possibly availability, those figures do not reveal which laptop is the better deal. A discount label is not enough: compare the final price for the configuration you can actually buy, in the same market and currency.
