Choose the MSI Crosshair A16 HX if you want its listed 16-inch, 2560 × 1600, 240 Hz display; choose the Katana 15 HX if you prefer a smaller 15.6-inch laptop or want to compare its FHD and QHD panel options. The right buy depends on the exact model suffix and configuration—not just the family name. MSI’s specifications do not establish which laptop is faster in games, quieter, lasts longer on battery, or offers better value at today’s prices.
How the Katana 15 HX and Crosshair A16 HX differ
This comparison covers the Katana 15 HX C14W and two distinct Crosshair A16 HX families, E8W and D8W. Specifications vary by configuration and region, so confirm the complete model number and retailer listing before buying. The figures below are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results.

Choose the Crosshair for a larger, higher-refresh panel
The listed Crosshair A16 HX E8W and D8W panels are 16-inch QHD+ displays with a 240 Hz refresh rate. That gives you a larger image area and a higher listed refresh ceiling than either Katana panel option. A higher refresh rate can matter for fast-moving games, but it does not by itself guarantee that a laptop will render a game at 240 frames per second.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Core i7-14650HX and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 (RTX 50 Series, Blackwell) deliver fast, responsive performance with ray tracing and DLSS 4 for today’s top titles.
- 15.6" QHD 165Hz, 100% P3 visuals: Game on a 15.6" QHD (1440p) 165Hz display with wide-gamut 100% DCI-P3 color, giving you sharper detail and smoother motion than typical 1080p 144Hz panels.
- Cooler Boost 5 shared-pipe thermals: Dual fans, multi-heat-pipe Cooler Boost 5 and a shared-pipe design help keep CPU and GPU temps in check so frame rates stay stable during long sessions.
- 4-Zone RGB keyboard built for play: Customize your look with a 4-Zone RGB keyboard featuring highlighted WASD and specially designed keycaps plus a numpad for chat, shortcuts, and everyday use.
- AI-ready, Copilot-enhanced connectivity hub: MSI AI Engine and Copilot optimize performance and multitasking, while HDMI (up to 8K), USB-C with DisplayPort/Power Delivery, Wi-Fi 6E, RJ45, and USB-A ports keep you plugged into monitors and peripherals.
Choose the Katana if you want a smaller screen or a choice of resolution
The Katana C14W is listed with either a 15.6-inch FHD 144 Hz or QHD 165 Hz panel. Check the individual configuration: the family name does not tell you which screen is installed. MSI describes its optional QHD panel as offering visual clarity and 165 Hz motion; that is manufacturer product-page language, not an independent display test.
For either laptop, verify the exact panel resolution, refresh rate, and color-gamut specification in the retailer’s SKU details. The cited specifications establish the listed resolutions and refresh rates, but not a universal panel-quality winner.
Compare the GPU and its memory—not just the RTX number
The Katana C14W specifications list RTX 5050, RTX 5060, and RTX 5070 Laptop GPU options with 8 GB GDDR7. Crosshair configurations are less uniform: E8W includes RTX 5070 listings with either 8 GB or 12 GB, while D8W lists RTX 5060 and RTX 5070 options with 8 GB.

That difference makes the exact SKU especially important if you are considering a Crosshair E8W RTX 5070: the GPU name alone does not identify its video memory. Compare the full GPU description, VRAM, display, and price on the particular unit you plan to buy. These specification pages do not provide same-condition gaming benchmarks, so they cannot support a claim that one family or GPU configuration is faster in games.
Understand the CPU and power figures
The Katana C14W uses Intel Core HX processor options; MSI’s overview names the Core i9-14900HX at the top of the family. Crosshair E8W uses AMD Ryzen 9 8000 HX-series processors, with MSI naming the Ryzen 9 8940HX in its overview. Check the specific CPU listed for the unit, and do not treat the two family-level headlines as a direct performance comparison.
MSI lists up to 190 W combined CPU-GPU power for Crosshair E8W, up to 170 W for D8W, and up to 170 W for Katana C14W under specified configuration and operating conditions. These are manufacturer maximums, not measurements of gaming performance, cooling, or sustained behavior. In particular, the E8W and D8W figures are not interchangeable: they refer to different Crosshair variants.

Check upgrade and storage details before buying
Storage layouts differ. The cited Katana C14W page lists two M.2 PCIe Gen4 slots and directs owners to consult a service center for SSD upgrades. Crosshair E8W lists one Gen4 and one Gen5-compatible M.2 slot; D8W lists two M.2 slots. MSI’s E8W and D8W pages also list up to 96 GB of DDR5-5200 memory, while the Katana page lists up to 96 GB across its configurations, with memory details varying by model.
Before planning an upgrade, confirm the exact unit’s installed memory, available slots, SSD compatibility, and service requirements. A family-level slot count is not a substitute for instructions for your specific model.
Which one should you buy?

Make the final comparison on matched configurations
Compare live prices for units with the GPU, display, memory, and storage you actually want. Then look for independent tests of the exact or closely matched configurations if gaming speed, fan noise, temperatures, or battery life will decide the purchase. Those outcomes are not established by the manufacturer specifications cited here.
