The MSI Katana 15 HX B14W can be a strong-value gaming laptop, but it is not automatically better than Acer Predator or Alienware alternatives. Its appeal depends on the exact configuration and local price: a Tom’s Guide RTX 5060 review unit delivered playable results in several 1440p game tests, while the same review measured a relatively dim screen. Treat “budget” and “best” as comparisons to specific models at specific prices—not universal rankings.
What the B14W name does—and does not—tell you
Katana 15 HX B14W is a family, not one fixed specification. MSI’s US specification page lists both 15.6-inch FHD 144Hz and QHD 165Hz display options, alongside varying processor, graphics, memory, and storage configurations. Check the seller’s full model number and listing rather than assuming every B14W has the same screen or components. MSI’s US specifications are the manufacturer reference; a regional retail bundle may differ.
Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 review describes an entry configuration with a Core i7-14650HX, RTX 5050, 16GB memory, 512GB storage, and QHD 165Hz screen, and a higher configuration with Core i9-14900HX, RTX 5070, 32GB, and 1TB. Its tested unit was a different configuration: Core i7-14650HX, RTX 5060, 16GB, and 512GB. Those distinctions matter: the review’s performance figures below belong to that RTX 5060 unit, not every B14W. Tom’s Guide’s review and configuration details
How well does the reviewed RTX 5060 model perform?
In Tom’s Guide’s 1440p game tests, its Core i7/RTX 5060 review unit recorded 159 frames per second in Counter-Strike 2, 54fps in Forza Horizon 5, and 30fps in F1 25. These are results from that publication’s review unit and test settings, not a promise of the same frame rates on another B14W SKU or with different graphics settings.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Core i7-14650HX and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 (RTX 50 Series, Blackwell) deliver fast, responsive performance with ray tracing and DLSS 4 for today’s top titles.
- 15.6" QHD 165Hz, 100% P3 visuals: Game on a 15.6" QHD (1440p) 165Hz display with wide-gamut 100% DCI-P3 color, giving you sharper detail and smoother motion than typical 1080p 144Hz panels.
- Cooler Boost 5 shared-pipe thermals: Dual fans, multi-heat-pipe Cooler Boost 5 and a shared-pipe design help keep CPU and GPU temps in check so frame rates stay stable during long sessions.
- 4-Zone RGB keyboard built for play: Customize your look with a 4-Zone RGB keyboard featuring highlighted WASD and specially designed keycaps plus a numpad for chat, shortcuts, and everyday use.
- AI-ready, Copilot-enhanced connectivity hub: MSI AI Engine and Copilot optimize performance and multitasking, while HDMI (up to 8K), USB-C with DisplayPort/Power Delivery, Wi-Fi 6E, RJ45, and USB-A ports keep you plugged into monitors and peripherals.
The same review reported Geekbench 7 scores of 2,490 single-core and 16,584 multi-core, a 3:24 time for its Handbrake 4K-to-1080p encode, and SSD speeds of 3,490 MB/s write and 3,902 MB/s read. These help characterize that particular machine, but gaming results and display usability are likely more decisive for most buyers.
Comparisons do not yield a blanket win. GamesRadar found its RTX 5060 Katana kept pace with some more expensive RTX 5060 competitors in synthetic 3DMark tests, but fell behind the Legion 7 and Alienware 16X Aurora at more demanding settings. Its assessment supports considering the Katana for value, not assuming it beats higher-priced machines across games and settings. GamesRadar’s review
What are the main trade-offs?
Screen brightness
Tom’s Guide measured 262.2 nits peak brightness on its Katana review unit. In that same publication’s comparison, the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI measured 520.8 nits, the Alienware 16X Aurora 450.8 nits, and Alienware 16 Area-51 368 nits. These are review-specific measurements, not a claim that all units or panels will measure identically. If you often play in a bright room, check the exact B14W panel and compare it in person or against measurements of the specific alternative.

Tom’s Guide also reported 151.3% sRGB coverage, 107.1% DCI-P3 coverage, and Delta-E 0.07 for its tested display. Coverage figures are measurement conventions and do not cancel out the measured brightness limitation; consider both the kind of work you do and the lighting where you use the laptop.
Battery runtime
In Tom’s Guide’s light-use battery test, run at 150-nit screen brightness, the Katana lasted 5 hours 9 minutes. The Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI lasted 4:11 and the Alienware 16X Aurora 3:01 in that review’s test. These are results under the publication’s methodology, not guaranteed everyday runtimes. A gaming laptop used for demanding games should generally be treated as a plugged-in machine; for frequent unplugged work, compare test methods and runtime expectations carefully.
Does it offer better value than Acer or Alienware?
Value changes with market, date, and the exact GPU and bundle. Tom’s Guide’s review, published September 20, 2026, listed Katana starting prices of $1,284 in the US and £1,299 in the UK, and higher-configuration prices of $1,999 and £1,799. Its comparison listed the Alienware 16X Aurora at $2,499 and Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI at $1,699. Those are dated review prices, not verified current offers.

PC Gamer’s September 30, 2026 review described its reviewed configuration at £1,300 in the UK and $1,799 in the US, and judged the value much less attractive in the US against similarly specced alternatives. Because the sources’ tested configurations and quoted prices differ, do not combine their figures as if they describe one identical SKU. GamesRadar also noted cheaper RTX 5050 configurations had been available just over $1,000 when its review was written; that is historical context, not a current deal. So, the Katana is most compelling when the specific RTX 5050 or RTX 5060 configuration is meaningfully cheaper than a comparable competitor in your market, and its panel and battery limitations suit your use. Compare like with like: processor and GPU, graphics power/configuration where available, resolution and game settings, display, memory and storage, and current local price. The cited sources do not establish live stock, current prices, or warranty differences.

- Identify the full SKU. Confirm the processor, GPU, RAM, SSD capacity, and exact panel—FHD 144Hz or QHD 165Hz in the US family specifications—on the retailer’s product page and the unit label.
- Match the comparison. Compare the same GPU class and similar memory/storage bundle, then seek game results at the resolution and settings you intend to use. An RTX 5060 review result does not establish how an RTX 5050 or RTX 5070 B14W performs.
- Check the screen against your environment. Decide whether QHD resolution and refresh rate are more important than brightness; the tested unit’s 262.2-nit peak measurement is a caution for bright spaces.
- Use current local pricing. The cited prices are from reviews published in September 2026 and are not live quotes. Compare the exact SKU’s price, seller, return terms, and warranty before ordering.
Who should consider it?
- Consider it if gaming performance and a high-refresh QHD option matter more than a particularly bright panel or long unplugged runtime, and the exact configuration is competitively priced where you live.
- Compare alternatives closely if you game in bright rooms, need longer battery life, or prioritize OLED or stronger screen quality. GamesRadar, for example, says a Legion 5 is a better fit for buyers prioritizing screen quality.
Tom’s Guide reviewer Nikita Achanta’s September 20, 2026 verdict was: “If you want a powerful gaming laptop but you’re on a budget, the MSI Katana 15 HX B14W is worth considering.” That is a qualified recommendation; the right purchase still turns on which B14W configuration is actually on sale and what compromises you will accept.
