The MSI Big Bang-XPower is a premium Intel X58 motherboard for LGA1366 Core i7 processors, built for the overclocking and multi-GPU PCs of its era. Its six DDR3 slots, six PCI Express 2.0 slots, and mix of SATA, USB, networking, and enthusiast controls made it unusually well equipped for a 2010 board. Those period features do not establish that a used example is compatible with a particular processor, fully working, or worth its asking price today.

What platform does the MSI Big Bang-XPower support?

MSI specifies an Intel X58 chipset paired with the ICH10R southbridge and an LGA1366 socket for Intel Core i7 processors. The board belongs to an older platform; the broad Core i7 label is not enough to confirm that a particular CPU will work. Check the processor against MSI’s CPU support list and specification page, including any BIOS requirements, before buying or assembling a system. Exact compatible processor models and a BIOS compatibility matrix are not established here.

MSI lists a maximum QPI rate of 25.6 GB/s on its specification page. That is a manufacturer-listed platform figure, not an independently measured result for this board.

How much memory and expansion does it offer?

Six DDR3 slots with triple-channel memory

The board has six unbuffered DDR3 DIMM slots and supports triple-channel operation, with up to 24 GB according to MSI. The specification lists multiple DDR3 speed grades; settings above the standard supported speed are identified as overclocked. Maximum capacity and supported speed do not guarantee that every module combination will work: verify the memory configuration and module compatibility for the CPU and BIOS in the system you plan to build.

Six PCI Express 2.0 positions, with differing bandwidth

MSI lists six PCI Express 2.0 slots, configured as two x16, two x8, and two x4 positions. That made the board suitable for the multi-card builds contemporary reviewers had in mind, but six physical slots do not mean six full-bandwidth graphics connections. Check the board’s slot and lane configuration against the cards and other PCIe devices you intend to install.

What storage and connectivity does it provide?

MSI’s specification lists a mix of controllers and connection standards:

MSI PRO B550M-P WIFI6E ProSeries Motherboard (AMD Ryzen 5000 Series, AM4, DDR4, PCIe 4.0, SATA 6Gb/s, M.2, USB 3.2 Gen 2, HDMI/DP, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, mATX)
  • Supports AMD Ryzen 5000 Series, 5000 G-Series, 4000 G-Series, and 3000 Series processors
  • Supports DDR4 Memory, up to 4400+ MT/s (OC)
  • Lightning Fast Experience: PCIe 4.0 slot and Lightning Gen4 x4 M.2
  • EZ DIY: EZ Debug LED and EZ Mounting
  • Wi-Fi 6E Solution: the ideal solution for professional and multimedia use, delivering secure, stable, and high-speed networking and data transmission
  • Storage: two SATA 6 Gb/s ports provided by a Marvell controller and six SATA 3 Gb/s ports through the ICH10R.
  • USB: USB 3.0 support, alongside the board’s other USB connectivity.
  • Networking: dual Gigabit Ethernet.
  • Legacy and external connections: FireWire and eSATA.

These ports were a broad feature set for the board’s generation. The distinction between the Marvell SATA ports and the ICH10R ports matters when planning drives, and TechSpot’s review aggregation notes criticism of the SATA 6 ports’ alignment. That is a reported layout concern, not evidence that the ports on every individual board are damaged or unusable.

Which enthusiast features stood out?

MSI promoted the board for overclocking with OC Genie, onboard hardware buttons, and voltage check points. Its datasheet describes OC Genie as “Auto OC to boost performance in 1 sec.” That is MSI’s marketing description, not an independently verified guarantee of an overclock, stability, or a specific performance gain.

“Military Class” is MSI branding for components and design features; it should not be read as proof of military certification or independently established durability. The board also features MSI’s QuantumWave audio branding. TechSpot’s aggregation of eight expert reviews, revised February 7, 2013, records favorable comments about the layout, audio riser card, switchable LEDs, and surface-mounted power buttons. It also summarizes criticism of the OC Dashboard controller. These are reviewer-reported impressions, not a diagnosis of any particular used board.

How did reviewers assess it when it launched?

Contemporary coverage positioned the Big Bang-XPower as a high-end board for overclockers and gamers. HotHardware’s August 16, 2010 review examined its layout, BIOS, graphics-card configuration, performance, overclocking and stability, audio, and power consumption. PC Perspective’s July 14, 2010 review described it as an option for extreme overclocking or systems with many GPUs. Its report that the board did not consume more power than the reviewer’s previous Gigabyte X58 board applied to the reviewer’s best idle conditions and test setup; it is not a general efficiency comparison.

KitGuru’s July 9, 2010 review gave a UK price of £270 including VAT at the time. That figure is launch-era context only, not a current price guide. TechSpot’s aggregation lists eight expert reviews—six rated “Excellent” and two “Good”—under its own rating system. That summary is not a new, standardized test or a prediction of the condition of a surviving board.

Is the MSI Big Bang-XPower worth buying today?

It is best understood as a legacy motherboard for someone deliberately building or maintaining an X58/LGA1366 system, not as a current-platform upgrade. Whether a particular board is worth buying depends on that unit’s condition, completeness, verified functionality, and price; no current listings or market valuation are established here.

  • Confirm the exact CPU and BIOS compatibility using MSI’s support information.
  • Check the board’s physical condition, including socket pins, memory slots, power connectors, and SATA ports.
  • Ask whether it has been tested to POST and operate reliably, and whether essential accessories are included if you need them.
  • Verify that your intended memory, graphics cards, storage, case, and power supply fit the board’s requirements.

If comparing it with another premium X58 board, focus on verified CPU support, memory capacity and channel mode, actual PCIe lane allocation, storage and USB controllers, networking and audio, BIOS and overclocking controls, and the condition and price of the specific used unit. A period comparison of X58 flagships appears in Tom’s Hardware’s coverage; it does not establish which board is the best purchase in today’s used market.
