mpdris2-rs is a small bridge that makes a running Music Player Daemon (MPD) server visible to software that speaks MPRIS, the D-Bus media-control standard. Once it runs in your desktop session, MPRIS-aware tools such as playerctl and desktop media controls can discover MPD as a media player, read its playback state, and send basic commands. It does not replace MPD or add a music library. It reflects the state of an MPD server you already run.
How the pieces connect
Three components are involved, and most setup problems come from one of the links between them:
- The MPD server, which holds the music, the queue, and stored playlists, and speaks MPD’s own control protocol.
- mpdris2-rs, which connects to MPD over a host and port or a UNIX socket and republishes its state on D-Bus.
- The D-Bus session bus, where MPRIS clients look for players at the object path
/org/mpris/MediaPlayer2.
What MPRIS requires and what the bridge implements
MPRIS (Media Player Remote Interfacing Specification) is a D-Bus API published by freedesktop.org. A compliant player exposes /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2 and implements the org.mpris.MediaPlayer2 and org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Player interfaces. The TrackList and Playlists interfaces are optional. The mpdris2-rs README lists support for the root interface, player controls, the current queue as a track list, and playlists.

Installation
Arch Linux (AUR)
The README says Arch Linux users can obtain the project from the AUR. Package versions change, so check the current AUR listing before installing.
Building from source
- Install a Rust toolchain of version 1.88.0 or newer. The README states 1.88.0 as the minimum supported Rust version.
- In the project’s source directory, build the release binary:
cargo build --release - Install the release binary and the user service described in the README. The README covers systemd-based Linux systems.
- Enable and start the user service with
systemctl --user enable --nowfollowed by the unit name given in the README.
Before starting the service, confirm that MPD is running and reachable with the settings described below.

Configuring the MPD connection
The bridge accepts either a host and port or a UNIX socket path. The README sets the precedence and defaults as follows:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Method | How it is set | Notes from the README |
|---|---|---|
| Explicit host and port | The host option in the mpdris2-rs configuration | Takes precedence over MPD_HOST |
| Environment variable | MPD_HOST |
Used only when the explicit host option is absent |
| Default | No option and no MPD_HOST |
localhost:6600 |
| UNIX socket | An absolute socket path | Relative paths are not valid. Linux abstract sockets are supported. |
For a remote MPD server, point the host setting at that machine. The MPD server itself must accept connections on the interface you choose, which is controlled by MPD’s own configuration, not by the bridge.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
The D-Bus session address
The bridge reads the session bus address from DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS. If that variable is unset, it falls back to $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/bus. According to the README, KDE and GNOME usually set the address automatically. If you start a graphical session through a bare window manager, the session bus may not be initialised, and you need to set it up yourself before the bridge starts.
Artwork without access to music files
The project’s distinguishing feature is artwork retrieval. mpdris2-rs uses MPD’s native readpicture and albumart commands and stores the images temporarily in $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR. According to the README, this means the bridge does not need local access to the music files, and artwork works for remote MPD servers and internet radio. These are the project’s described behaviours; they have not been independently verified for this article.

If artwork does not appear, check three things: that XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is set and writable for the user running the service, that the current track actually has embedded or server-side artwork, and that your MPD server supports the two commands (the README does not state a version floor for them; see the compatibility section below).
Notifications
Desktop notifications are a separate feature from MPRIS playback control. The README documents these options:

MPD version compatibility
The stable MPD documentation is currently version 0.24.15. The mpdris2-rs README does not state a minimum or maximum compatible MPD version. Treat 0.24.15 as the documented reference point, not as a compatibility guarantee. If your server is older or newer, test the features you rely on, especially artwork and queue handling.
Checking that it works
- Start playback with any MPD client so that MPD has a current track and queue.
- List the MPRIS players visible on your session bus:
playerctl -lThe bridge should appear in the list under the player name the project uses.
- Query that player’s state by passing its name to playerctl’s
-poption, for exampleplayerctl -pfollowed by the name from step 2, thenstatus. The output should match MPD’s playback state.
Troubleshooting
- The bridge never appears in the player list. Check that
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESSis set in the environment the service runs in, and that MPD answers on the configured host and port or socket path. - The player appears but shows no track. The bridge is running but cannot read MPD’s state. Confirm MPD is playing, and that the host or socket setting points to the same server.
- A remote server is unreachable. Confirm the host setting, network reachability, and that MPD is configured to listen on the network interface you are using.
- A socket path is rejected. Socket paths must be absolute. Replace any relative path with a full path.
- Artwork is missing. See the artwork checks in the section above.
Alternatives
Two other software projects provide MPRIS support for MPD. mpDris2 describes MPRIS support for MPD with local or remote servers. mpd2mpris documents an MPRIS 2.2 feature set that includes player controls and exposure of the queue and playlists. Each project supports only the features it describes.
| Comparison axis | mpdris2-rs | mpDris2 | mpd2mpris |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local or remote MPD servers | Remote supported through host or socket settings | Described as supporting local and remote servers | Not stated in its published description |
| Queue exposed as a track list | Supported | Not stated in its published description | Described as exposed |
| Stored playlists | Supported | Not stated in its published description | Described as exposed |
| MPRIS version | Not stated in its README | Not stated in its published description | MPRIS 2.2 |
| Artwork source | MPD readpicture and albumart, cached in XDG_RUNTIME_DIR | Not stated in its published description | Not stated in its published description |
| Notifications | Built-in, configurable and separate from MPRIS | Not stated in its published description | Not stated in its published description |
When comparing bridges, check the same things in each: which MPRIS interfaces are implemented, how the queue and playlists are exposed, how artwork is handled for local files, remote servers, and radio, how the connection is configured, whether notifications are supported, how the package is installed and started, and whether the project is still maintained and tested against your MPD version. The published descriptions settle the feature rows above, but they do not establish current maintenance quality or a full MPD compatibility matrix for any of the three.
What is and is not established
No usage statistics or performance benchmarks are published for mpdris2-rs, so this article makes no claims about speed or adoption. The behaviour described here comes from the project README, the freedesktop.org MPRIS specification, and the stable MPD documentation (version 0.24.15). Package freshness and current maintenance activity were not verified for this article, so check the project’s repository and the AUR listing before relying on the bridge.
Who should use mpdris2-rs
Use mpdris2-rs when you want desktop or command-line MPRIS tools to see an MPD server you already run, particularly if you want queue and playlist exposure or MPD-native artwork from a remote server or internet radio. If your only need is MPD’s own client protocol, or if your clients never use MPRIS, you do not need a bridge.
