Mozilla marked Firefox’s 20th anniversary in November 2024 with a campaign that combined browser history, red-panda awareness and a practical feature demonstration. The centerpiece was a handpicked collection of 20 red panda camera streams, which Mozilla used to show how Firefox Picture-in-Picture can keep a video visible while you browse elsewhere.
The campaign was an awareness and viewing initiative, not a reported fundraising drive. Mozilla did not publish a donation total, measured conservation result or campaign-wide audience figure.
What Mozilla’s 20-red-panda-cams campaign was
Mozilla published Celebrating 20 years of Firefox with 20 red panda cams on November 27, 2024. It said the project partnered with the Red Panda Network to raise awareness of red pandas and their Himalayan habitat, then selected 20 online camera streams for people to watch.
The list included streams or views associated with zoos and wildlife facilities in the United States, Canada, England, China and Australia. Examples named by Mozilla include Beardsley Zoo, Binder Park Zoo, Chester Zoo, Toronto Zoo, Zoo Knoxville and Zoos Victoria. Those locations were part of the 2024 article; individual streams can change or go offline.

Mozilla described the idea in approachable terms—a “red panda buddy on your screen”—but the editorial point was broader: connect an anniversary audience with an endangered species and its habitat through publicly available live video.
What the campaign did not claim
- It did not announce a donation amount or say that watching a stream directly funded conservation.
- It did not report a measured change in public awareness, red-panda numbers or habitat protection.
- The figure of 20 refers to the number of camera streams Mozilla curated, not to a wildlife population or conservation outcome.
Why red pandas fit a Firefox anniversary
Mozilla’s explanation of the browser’s name links the campaign to Firefox’s origin story. While brainstorming names, the team paired “fire” and “fox.” A web search then led them to red pandas, which are known locally as “firefoxes.”

Mozilla used that naming connection to explain the partnership. | Milestone or feature | What the cited Mozilla material establishes |
|---|---|
| Firefox 1.0 | Launched November 9, 2004. |
| 20th anniversary | Marked by Mozilla in 2024. |
| Red-panda collection | 20 camera streams curated for the anniversary article. |
| Picture-in-Picture demonstration | Used the streams to illustrate keeping video visible while using other pages, tabs or apps. |
The anniversary feature therefore worked on two levels: it recalled why Firefox mattered in the early browser landscape and showed a current, lightweight way to use the browser.
How Picture-in-Picture works in the campaign
Mozilla presented Picture-in-Picture as a way to pop a video out of its webpage and pin it on screen. You can then move among other pages, browser tabs or applications while the video remains visible in a floating window.

The campaign page points specifically to Zoo Knoxville’s red panda camera as an example. The feature explanation is Mozilla’s description; it is not an independent test of every current Firefox build or of every camera site’s video player.
A typical viewing sequence
- Open one of the red panda camera pages listed in Mozilla’s 2024 campaign article.
- Start the stream if the facility’s player is live and available.
- Use Firefox’s Picture-in-Picture control on the video to detach it from the page.
- Keep the floating video on screen while opening another tab, visiting another page or using another application.
Because the cameras are operated by separate zoos and facilities, playback controls, schedules and availability can differ. Picture-in-Picture changes how Firefox displays a compatible video; it does not guarantee that a facility’s stream is running.

What is known about red-panda conservation
Mozilla’s campaign article focuses on awareness and does not provide a current population estimate. A separate Mozilla article dated September 14, 2023, described red pandas as endangered and reported that as few as 2,500 remained in the wild. That is a dated figure from that article, not a 2024 campaign measurement or a claim about the species’ present population.
The campaign’s stated conservation connection was its partnership with the Red Panda Network and its effort to direct attention toward red pandas and Himalayan habitat. The published material does not quantify what the campaign itself achieved.
How to interpret the campaign today
- As anniversary storytelling: the red-panda connection gives the Firefox name a concrete origin story while marking the November 9, 2004 launch.
- As awareness content: the 20 streams offer an accessible way to observe an endangered species and learn about its habitat.
- As a feature example: Picture-in-Picture turns a live camera into a demonstration of multitasking in Firefox.
- As a time-specific list: the streams were selected for a November 2024 article, so readers should treat availability and schedules as changeable.
Bottom line on Mozilla’s 20th-anniversary effort
Mozilla’s 2024 campaign was a carefully matched combination of history, wildlife awareness and product education. Firefox’s name supplied the red-panda link; the Red Panda Network partnership supplied the conservation-awareness purpose; and 20 zoo and facility cameras supplied something people could watch. Picture-in-Picture made those streams a practical browser demonstration without turning the campaign into a claim of quantified conservation impact.
