If you want another story where survival depends on enduring a hostile landscape, start with Meek’s Cutoff or Jeremiah Johnson. Both offer frontier hardship, but they take a different route from The Revenant: Meek’s Cutoff is contemplative, while Jeremiah Johnson is centered on mountain-man life. For a more violent frontier story, try Netflix’s American Primeval limited series; for an icy modern thriller rather than a Western, choose Hold the Dark.
The best match depends on what stayed with you: the ordeal of staying alive, the wilderness itself, a drive for justice, or the film’s visceral intensity.

What makes a movie feel like The Revenant?
A useful match needs more than a Western setting. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2015 film follows explorer Hugh Glass as he pursues survival and justice after a bear attack leaves him for dead, according to 20th Century Studios. Its story combines physical survival, a landscape that shapes the action, and a forceful personal motive.
Use four questions to choose what to watch next:
- Survival: Is enduring injury, exposure, hunger, or a dangerous journey the main dramatic engine?
- Landscape: Does the wilderness drive events, or is it mainly a backdrop?
- Motive: Is the central character pursuing revenge or justice, rescuing someone, or simply trying to endure?
- Pacing: Do you want a contemplative, observational story or a more violent, propulsive one?
The closest survival-western matches
Meek’s Cutoff (2010): frontier hardship at a contemplative pace
Choose Meek’s Cutoff if the journey into an unforgiving frontier mattered more to you than constant action. Rotten Tomatoes’ Western guide calls it an “effective, intense journey of terror and survival in the untamed frontier,” while also describing its pace as contemplative. That makes it a strong match for landscape pressure and uncertainty, but not a like-for-like substitute for The Revenant’s action-forward intensity. Read the Rotten Tomatoes Western guide.

- After a 19th-century fur trapper gets mauled by a grizzly bear, he's robbed and left for dead by his companions. He survives and seeks revenge on them.
Jeremiah Johnson (1972): mountain-man immersion
For a story more focused on life in the wilderness, try Jeremiah Johnson. Its connection here is the sense of being immersed in the elements, not an identical plot. Pete Berg, director and executive producer of American Primeval, told Netflix Tudum that seeing the Robert Redford film as a child made him feel as if he were “in the elements … just surviving.” That is a useful description of the film’s wilderness appeal, not a claim that it reproduces Glass’s ordeal. Read Netflix Tudum’s feature on American Primeval.
Adjacent picks for frontier conflict or wilderness tension
American Primeval (2025): a limited series, not a movie
If you are open to a series, American Primeval offers a brutal frontier setting with survival at the center. Netflix Tudum describes it as a fictionalized dramatization set in 1857, where conflict over culture, religion, and community complicates the characters’ struggle to live. It is an adjacent choice rather than a film recommendation, and its creator connection to The Revenant is specific: writer Mark L. Smith also wrote the 2015 film. Berg described the series as an effort to take viewers into “the most dynamic, intense, and heart-pounding survival tale humanly possible.” Netflix Tudum’s series feature has more detail.

Hold the Dark (2018): cold-weather thriller, not a Western
Pick Hold the Dark for a wilderness thriller with a modern context rather than a frontier Western. Netflix Tudum describes a wolf hunt in Alaska that draws characters into unforgiving wilderness, and notes that the film is based on William Giraldi’s 2014 novel. It shares the pull of a harsh landscape and survival tension, but its premise and genre differ from The Revenant. See Netflix Tudum’s overview of Hold the Dark.
