To avoid reconnecting every device one by one after a move, set up the replacement router with the same Wi-Fi network name (SSID), password, and security type as your old network. Devices that saved those details can recognize the familiar network and reconnect. It is a shortcut, not a guarantee: some devices may still need individual setup.
How the Wi-Fi name and password shortcut works
Wi-Fi devices generally save network details, not a unique identity for the router itself. When the replacement router broadcasts the old network name and accepts the old password using the same security or encryption type, compatible devices can treat it as the network they already know. TP-Link recommends matching all three settings for its Tapo and Kasa smart devices, and says most Wi-Fi devices can reconnect when the network name and password are reused. TP-Link’s new-router guidance and its Tapo/Kasa troubleshooting instructions describe the approach.
You do not need to buy a particular router for this method. If you are already replacing hardware, configure the new router to use the old network details. There is no published success rate in the cited manufacturer guidance, and the result depends on whether each device supports the router’s settings and can use the saved credentials.
Before you switch routers, record the old Wi-Fi details
- Write down the exact network name (SSID), preserving capitalization and spaces.
- Record the Wi-Fi password. Passwords are case-sensitive, as Google’s Nest and Home troubleshooting instructions note.
- Check the old router’s security or encryption type, if you can access its settings. TP-Link specifically includes this setting in its instructions for Tapo and Kasa devices.
If the old router is already gone and you do not know a setting, check a device or router that still has access to its saved configuration, or consult the relevant manufacturer’s help. Do not assume an approximate network name or password will be close enough.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Set up the replacement router with the old network details
- Open the replacement router’s setup interface or app and locate its Wi-Fi or wireless settings.
- Enter the old SSID and password exactly. If the router offers a security or encryption setting, select the same type used by the old network where possible.
- Apply the settings and allow the router to restart or begin broadcasting the network.
- Turn off the old router’s Wi-Fi or give its network a different name while testing the replacement. If two routers broadcast the same SSID and credentials at once, a device may connect to the old router instead, making it harder to tell whether the new setup worked. Google recommends distinguishing the old network or disabling its Wi-Fi when troubleshooting.
- Give your devices an opportunity to reconnect, then check their apps or connection status. For any device still offline, follow its manufacturer’s instructions; it may need to forget the network, be reset, and be set up again.
What to expect—and when you may need to reconnect a device
TP-Link says a Tapo or Kasa device should automatically reconnect when the SSID, encryption type, and password match. Its broader router guidance says most Wi-Fi devices reconnect automatically when the network name and password are reused. Neither statement means every product will work without intervention.
Google’s Nest and Home instructions are device-specific and note that some products may need a factory reset and setup again. TP-Link likewise recommends resetting and configuring a device again if you cannot reuse the old wireless settings. A device that remains offline may have a different saved network, require a particular setup sequence, or be incompatible with a setting on the replacement router. Check that product’s own app or manual before resetting it.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Reuse the old settings or set devices up individually?
| Approach | When it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse the old SSID, password, and security type | You can reproduce the previous Wi-Fi configuration on the replacement router. | Compatible devices may reconnect without being set up one by one; some may still need attention. |
| Change network details and reconnect devices individually | You cannot reuse the old configuration, or a device does not reconnect. | Follow each product’s instructions. The steps may include forgetting the old network, resetting the device, and adding it again. |
Start with the matching-settings approach if you know the old details and can use them on the new router. Handle only the devices that fail individually, rather than assuming the whole home must be configured again.
