If your mouse moves on some surfaces but not on its mouse pad, the pad’s surface is the first thing to test. Optical sensors need surface detail they can read; transparent, glossy, reflective, grooved, dirty, or damaged areas may make tracking erratic or stop it. Try the mouse on clean white paper. If it works there, clean the pad and sensor, then check whether the pad’s finish or condition is the problem.
Why a mouse pad can interfere with tracking
An optical mouse detects movement by reading detail on the surface beneath it. Logitech explains that its optical sensor uses the surface pattern to track cursor position in its support guidance on tracking issues. If a surface offers too little readable detail, reflects light, or has features the particular sensor struggles to interpret, the cursor may skip, drift, or fail to follow the mouse.
Manufacturer advice is not identical for every model, so a pad sold for mouse use is not automatically a good match for every sensor. HP lists glass, translucent, reflective, and grooved surfaces among possible trouble sources in its wireless mouse troubleshooting guidance. SteelSeries recommends a single-color matte surface when testing an optical mouse, while Xiaomi recommends a flat surface and preferably a fabric pad for its Wireless Mouse Lite 2 in its model-specific guidance.
Test whether the pad is the problem
- Confirm the symptom. Make sure the mouse is powered and the issue is cursor movement, not just scrolling, clicking, or a computer connection problem.
- Try a comparison surface. Move the mouse on a clean sheet of white paper or another clean, flat, matte, nontransparent surface. Avoid glass, mirrors, shiny metal, deep grooves, and heavily patterned surfaces during this test.
- Compare the results. If tracking works on paper but not on the pad, the pad’s material, finish, condition, or a particular area of it is a likely contributor. If the cursor still fails on the comparison surface, continue with the checks below rather than concluding that the pad is at fault.
Inspect and clean the pad, sensor, and mouse feet
Check whether the pad is transparent, shiny, strongly patterned, deeply grooved, visibly dirty, or worn. If tracking fails only in one spot, rotate the pad or test another area; that helps distinguish a localized dirty or damaged patch from a broader surface mismatch.

Remove loose debris from the pad and mouse feet, then gently clear dust around the sensor opening. Follow the instructions for your mouse model. Logitech’s M125 guidance allows cleaning with a soft cloth or cotton swab, while SteelSeries recommends compressed air in its sensor instructions and warns against liquid cleaner on the sensor. Its support page states, “We do not recommend using a liquid cleaner to clean the surface of the sensor as it can result in permanent damage.” Do not apply liquid cleaner directly to the sensor.
If it still does not track, check power and connection
When a different surface and gentle cleaning do not help, check basic power and connection issues before assuming the mouse is broken. For a wireless mouse, verify the power switch and battery orientation, charge or replace the batteries, and bring the mouse closer to its receiver. If possible, try a direct USB connection or a different USB port. For Bluetooth, confirm pairing and consider whether distance or interference could be disrupting the link.

Check any pointer settings that were recently changed and restore the relevant setting if needed. For supported devices, SteelSeries also suggests checking for firmware updates.

When the pad is the likely culprit—and when to seek help
If the mouse works on paper but not on its existing pad, try a clean, plain fabric or matte pad as a practical next step. Look for an opaque, flat surface without a glossy coating, deep grooves, or a complicated pattern. These are useful starting traits, not a guarantee for every mouse: follow the mouse maker’s advice, particularly for gaming mice with adjustable lift-off-distance settings or unusual sensor designs.
