The Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 is worth considering if you specifically want a compact flip phone with a useful outer screen, premium styling and strong battery life. At its announced U.S. launch price of $1,499.99, however, its case is difficult: reviewers found the changes from the prior generation limited, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset carries over. Check today’s price before deciding—the launch MSRP is not a current-price guarantee.
What you get with the Razr Ultra 2026
The U.S. configuration reviewed by Tom’s Guide pairs 16GB of RAM with 512GB of storage. Its 7-inch internal AMOLED display has a 2992 × 1224 resolution and 165Hz refresh rate; the 4-inch external AMOLED screen is 1272 × 1080 and also supports 165Hz. Motorola advertises peak brightness of up to 5,000 nits for HDR on the internal display and 3,000 nits on the external display. Those brightness figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Motorola’s announcement and Tom’s Guide’s review provide the specifications.
The phone uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, has a 5,000mAh battery, and supports 68W wired and 30W wireless charging. Its listed protection rating is IP48. The camera hardware comprises 50MP main, ultrawide and front cameras; Motorola describes the rear setup as a 50MP LOFIC main sensor plus an ultrawide camera with macro capability. Megapixel counts alone do not establish image quality.

The foldable features that matter most
The outer screen can handle useful interactions without opening the phone, and can serve as a preview screen for selfies or vlogs. Motorola’s Flex View positions let the phone stand for hands-free shooting. The company also lists features including Camcorder Rotate to Zoom, Group Shot, Signature Style and Frame Match. These are advertised capabilities; whether they improve a buyer’s photos depends on real-world results and personal use.
#1 Best Overall
- Universal unlocked: Compatible with all major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and other prepaid carriers.
How good is the battery and charging?
Tom’s Guide recorded 16 hours 20 minutes in its own battery-drain test. That is a publication-specific result, not a promise of how long every owner will get: usage, settings and network conditions affect endurance.
In Tom’s Guide’s charging test, the phone reached 42% after 15 minutes and 74% after 30 minutes. Those results belong to that publication’s test and should not be treated as guaranteed charging times. Tom’s Guide praised the battery life, describing it as a strength of the phone. See its review and test details.

What reviewers liked—and what held it back
Strengths reviewers identified
- Useful displays: Tom’s Guide praised the vivid internal and external screens, as well as using the outer display to frame vlogs.
- Battery life: Its test result was strong in that publication’s comparison, and the reviewer singled out endurance as a positive.
- Camera flexibility: Tom’s Guide noted low-light improvements, while the flip design and cover screen offer a distinctive way to frame shots.
- Design: The phone’s styling and materials are central to its appeal, particularly for buyers who want a foldable that closes into a compact shape.
Reasons to hesitate
- High launch price: Tom’s Guide, Android Authority and Android Central each questioned whether the price is justified. These are editorial assessments, not a measured consensus.
- Limited generational change: Android Central found the design and core experience familiar from the 2025 model. Tom’s Guide highlighted that the Snapdragon 8 Elite was also used in the previous Ultra, and characterized it as two generations behind newer chips available when its 2026 review was published. That is the reviewer’s time-specific comparison, not a current ranking.
- Few standout AI additions: Tom’s Guide criticized the limited new AI features.
- Foldable repair risk: Ars Technica notes that hinge and flexible OLED failures can happen, even if a short review does not reveal long-term problems. It provides no failure rate, so this is a risk to consider rather than a quantified prediction. Factor in the cost and terms of any protection plan or insurance before buying.
For their respective assessments, see Android Authority, Android Central and Ars Technica.
Who should buy it, and what should they compare?
At or near its announced $1,499.99 U.S. launch MSRP, the Razr Ultra makes the most sense for someone who values the flip form, cover-screen workflow, design and battery enough to pay a premium. Motorola announced U.S. preorders for May 14, 2026, through Best Buy, Amazon.com and Motorola.com, with universally unlocked sales beginning May 21. Those were launch terms; they do not establish current availability or price. Motorola’s launch announcement lists them.

If those qualities are not your priority, compare live prices and trade-offs rather than relying on old promotions. Depending on what you want, alternatives include discounted previous-generation Razr Ultra models, the less expensive 2026 Razr or Razr+, conventional flagship phones, and book-style foldables. Android Authority specifically points readers seeking maximum camera capability or screen area toward conventional flagships or book-style foldables.
| Option | What it may suit better | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Razr Ultra 2026 | Compact closed-phone use, flip design and external-screen interactions | Current price, camera versatility, software-update commitment and durability coverage |
| Previous-generation Razr Ultra | Keeping the flip experience while potentially spending less | Actual discounted price and how its chipset and features compare with the 2026 model |
| 2026 Razr or Razr+ | Staying within Motorola’s flip-phone range at a lower price point | Current price and the specific features or hardware differences from the Ultra |
| Conventional flagship | Value or camera flexibility without a folding display | Camera zoom range, performance and price against the Ultra |
| Book-style foldable | More internal screen area and multitasking space | Closed-phone size, price and the screen area you will actually use |
For a fair comparison, use current prices and, where available, battery results from the same test method. Also weigh chipset generation and sustained performance, camera range, repair and durability terms, software-update commitments, and whether you prefer a compact phone or a larger open screen.

Durability, water resistance and screen care
Motorola’s support guidance says IP48 resistance was tested under controlled laboratory conditions. The rating covers solid objects larger than 1mm and limited immersion in still, fresh water. Motorola explicitly says the phone is not waterproof or dustproof, warns that dust can shorten hinge life or damage the display, and advises against beach or pool use. Read Motorola’s hardware and care guidance before exposing the phone to water or debris.
The phone comes with a screen protector customized for its foldable display. Motorola’s instruction is: “Don’t use third-party screen protectors.” If the fitted protector bubbles, warps or separates, Motorola directs owners to an authorized service center. A case is optional, but Motorola says it should not obstruct the air vent; do not assume an untested case fits correctly.
