The North American base Motorola Razr (2025) is worth considering if you want a pocketable flip phone with a genuinely useful cover screen and value it more than flagship speed or top-tier cameras. Its 3.6-inch external display handles notifications, supported apps, replies, and selfie framing without opening the phone; the trade-offs are middling demanding-task performance, inconsistent camera results, and battery life that reviewers describe as roughly a day rather than multiple days. Motorola also sells separate Razr+ and Razr Ultra (2025) models, with different specifications, so this assessment is about the base Razr only.

What the base Motorola Razr (2025) offers

Motorola’s 2025 family announcement lists a 3.6-inch external display and a 6.9-inch inner display for the base Razr. The Razr+ also has a 6.9-inch inner display but a larger 4.0-inch external screen, while the Razr Ultra has a 7.0-inch inner display. These are distinct models, not interchangeable names for the same phone. Motorola’s family announcement is the relevant reference for the display distinctions.

The central appeal is the flip form: close the phone to make it more compact, then use the outer screen for quick interactions or as a preview for the rear cameras. The base model is positioned as a lower-cost way into this foldable experience, with compromises compared with more premium foldables. Current price and promotions vary, so check the price available where you plan to buy rather than relying on a launch figure.

Motorola Razr 2025 pros and cons

Pros Cons
Compact flip design with a useful external screen for notifications, supported apps, message replies, and framing selfies. Performance is suited to everyday tasks, not a strength for demanding games or heavy app switching.
Reviewers found battery life strong for a foldable, with enough endurance for a typical day. It is not a dependable multi-day phone; heavy use of the large inner display can reduce the remaining margin.
Rear cameras can take selfies while the phone is closed, using the cover screen as a viewfinder. Image processing and results can be inconsistent, especially with motion; it is not a leading choice for camera-first buyers.
Lower-cost entry point to the Razr foldable experience. Foldable-screen and hinge care still matter; the IP48 rating does not make the phone dustproof or waterproof.

Reasons to buy the Motorola Razr (2025)

The cover screen makes the closed phone useful

Motorola says the base Razr’s 3.6-inch external display supports full apps, notifications, and message replies. That makes the closed phone useful for quick checks instead of requiring you to unfold it for every interaction. It also shows a preview when you use the rear cameras for selfies, which can help with group photos and framing.

Battery life is good for a foldable, with a one-day expectation

TechRadar’s 2025 review identifies a 4,500mAh battery and describes its endurance as an improvement over earlier Razrs. Ars Technica’s testing found the phone should last through a day. Those are reviewer observations, not a guarantee: screen use, signal, apps, and other habits affect runtime, and heavy use of the large display may leave less reserve by bedtime. Neither review supports treating it as a multi-day phone. See TechRadar’s base Razr review and Ars Technica’s review for their observations.

The cameras offer useful flexibility

The base model’s rear system comprises a 50MP main camera and a 13MP ultrawide, according to TechRadar’s review. The ultrawide adds flexibility, including macro capability, while using the rear cameras with the phone closed gives you the cover display as a selfie viewfinder. That particular advantage is practical for group shots, where the rear cameras can be easier to frame than a conventional front camera.

It is a more accessible way into a Razr

Independent reviews describe the base phone as a lower-cost entry into the Razr experience, rather than a premium foldable without compromises. That value proposition is strongest if the compact form and cover-screen experience matter more to you than the highest performance or most consistent camera output.

Reasons to skip it

Routine performance is not flagship performance

The base Razr uses a MediaTek Dimensity 7400X. TechRadar found it suitable for routine activities such as streaming and scrolling, but reported struggles with gaming and switching between apps. If you regularly play demanding games or keep many intensive tasks active, that is a meaningful compromise rather than a minor specification difference.

Camera consistency is a weak point

The camera hardware is versatile, but reviewers noted processing limitations and inconsistent results, including weaker motion capture. For everyday pictures and occasional cover-screen selfies, the setup can be useful. If getting the best smartphone camera is a priority, the base Razr is a poor fit; compare camera-focused phones and premium foldables before buying.

Foldable care and water resistance have limits

The base model’s IP48 rating is a limited protection rating, not a promise that the phone is waterproof or dustproof. Motorola’s North American 2025 user guide says the phone can withstand immersion in up to 1.5 meters of still fresh water for up to 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. The same guide cautions against dust exposure, salt water, pressurized water, prolonged or intentional submersion, and charging while wet; it also says resistance declines with wear. Do not treat the rating as permission to use the phone at a beach or pool.

Motorola also warns that dust can reduce hinge life and damage the display. The guide states: “The crease at the bend on the main display and the faint noise you may hear while flipping open the phone are part of the design and do not impact product durability.” That is the manufacturer’s explanation, not an independent durability test. Should you buy the base Razr or compare another model?

Choose the base Razr if a compact flip, a capable cover screen, and a lower entry cost matter more than peak speed or class-leading camera quality. Look elsewhere if demanding games, heavy multitasking, consistently strong camera output, or less concern about dust exposure are higher priorities.

When comparing it with the Razr+ or Razr Ultra, check each exact model’s price, display sizes and capabilities, processor, cameras, battery and reviewer endurance, charging, and water/dust rating. Do not assume that a Razr+ specification applies to the base phone. For example, Motorola’s crossbody case page is specifically for the Razr+ 2025; it does not establish compatibility with the base Razr. Verify the exact model in any accessory listing.

Current prices, inventory, promotions, software-support timelines, and base-model accessory compatibility are not established here and can vary. Confirm these details with the seller or manufacturer for your region before purchase.
