What do you gain by paying for the G96?

A newer listed Android version and stated support period

The G96 specifications list Android 15, one OS upgrade and three years of security maintenance releases. The G85 page lists Android 14, but the captured information does not state a directly comparable update commitment. The G96 therefore has a documented support promise here; the available information does not establish how long the G85 will receive updates.

A higher-tier listed processor, without a benchmark claim

Motorola lists the G96 with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 built on a 4 nm process and the G85 with a Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 on 6 nm. That makes the G96 the more promising option by processor tier on paper, but these specifications are not benchmark results. They do not establish a particular speed advantage in apps, games or everyday use.

More stated battery capacity, same charging wattage

The G96 lists 5,500 mAh against the G85’s 5,000 mAh, a 500 mAh capacity difference. Both list TurboPower 33 W charging, so the G96 does not have a higher stated charging wattage. Capacity alone cannot predict how long either phone lasts between charges; actual runtime depends on use and was not established by these specifications.

IP68 and documented camera hardware

The G96 lists an IP68 rating, compared with IP52 for the G85. IP ratings describe protection under specified test conditions; they do not mean water or dust damage is impossible, and should not be treated as a guarantee against damage in every situation. The G96 page also documents a 50 MP Sony Lytia 700C main camera with OIS, an 8 MP autofocus ultrawide / Macro Vision camera and a 32 MP front camera. The captured G85 source excerpt does not include camera details, so it is not enough to make a full camera comparison or claim the G96 takes better photos.

Where the Moto G85 still makes sense

It costs less at the captured offer prices

If the current price difference remains close to the captured ₹3,000 gap, the G85 is the straightforward choice for minimizing spend. Its lower price does not change the fact that the G96 lists newer software and several higher-tier specifications; decide whether those differences matter enough for your use to justify the extra cost.

It is lighter and slightly thinner on the listed dimensions

The G85 is listed at around 172 g and 7.59 mm thick; the G96 is listed at 178 g and 7.93 mm. Their heights are nearly identical, and the G85 is also marginally narrower. These are small paper differences, but the listed weight may matter if a lighter phone is a priority.

What is effectively similar between the two?

Both models list a 6.67-inch curved pOLED screen at 2400 × 1080 resolution and up to 144 Hz, so those headline panel figures do not distinguish them. The G96 specification page contains additional display details—including Corning Glass 5—that are not present in the captured G85 excerpt; that omission alone does not prove the G85 lacks a feature.

Both list 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM, 128 GB or 256 GB of storage, 33 W charging, stereo speakers, dual Nano SIM support, no NFC and no memory-card slot. RAM Boost is a software feature, not a substitute for physical RAM. If you need expandable storage or NFC, neither phone lists those features in the India specifications used here.

Which should you buy?

Choose the Moto G96 5G if

  • You value its documented Android 15 starting version and stated update commitment.
  • You prefer the higher-tier processor listed by Motorola, while recognizing that no benchmark comparison is established here.
  • You want the larger stated battery capacity, IP68 rating or the documented OIS-equipped main camera hardware.
  • The current price premium over the G85 is acceptable to you.

Choose the Moto G85 5G if

  • It is meaningfully cheaper at the time you buy and lower cost is your priority.
  • You prefer the lighter, slightly thinner model on the listed dimensions.
  • The G96’s additional listed specifications do not justify the price difference for your needs.

Check the model and network compatibility in your country

This comparison is based on Motorola India product information, not every regional version. Motorola cautions that specifications may vary by market. Before ordering outside India—or importing either phone—confirm the exact model number, configuration and 5G bands against your carrier’s requirements. The India pages list 5G bands but do not establish compatibility with every carrier or country.
