A county medical examiner reportedly classified 8-year-old Aurora Williams’s death as a homicide, finding that a failure to provide necessary medical care after she became unresponsive was a significant factor. Her mother, Gabrielle Hanson, said she did not realize how serious Aurora’s asthma attack had become and said, “I did everything I could.” The classification is not a criminal conviction.

What the report says happened
Aurora Williams, who was eight and lived in East San Jose, experienced an asthma attack that began the night before May 13, 2026. The report says she later became unresponsive and died. Her mother, Gabrielle Hanson, told the newspaper that she checked on Aurora the following morning and reminded her to keep her nebulizer on her face. Hanson said she had heard Aurora’s breathing worse before and did not understand how serious this episode was.
Why the death was reportedly classified as a homicide
According to the Mercury News account, the county medical examiner found that failure to provide necessary medical care on the day Aurora became unresponsive was a significant factor in her death and classified the death as a homicide. In this context, the reported classification is a medical examiner’s determination; it does not establish that anyone was convicted of a crime.

The article said the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office was evaluating whether to file charges at the time of publication. It did not report a charging decision, and the available account does not establish whether prosecutors later acted.
What Aurora’s mother said
Hanson said she did not blame herself, the county agency or anyone else, and described Aurora’s death as a tragedy. She disputed allegations of neglect and malnutrition. The headline’s statement, “I did everything I could,” is attributed to Hanson.

What earlier reports to child welfare said
The newspaper reported that teachers and medical providers made eight separate referrals to the county child-abuse hotline with concerns about Aurora’s welfare. According to the article’s account of county records, the Department of Family and Children’s Services found concerns dating back to 2023 to be unfounded or inconclusive.

How accounts of the home and agency response differ
The article describes social-worker and police accounts of serious sanitation problems in the household, including cockroaches, flies, pet hair and dander, trash, and pet urine. Hanson disputed the neglect allegations and said she had limited control over the home because it belonged to her father. She also said social workers provided pest foggers and roach traps that did not work.
Mount Pleasant school district Superintendent Elida MacArthur said, “Our staff did everything within their power to sound the alarm.” She called for a “full and independent examination of what happened, how the system failed Aurora, and why the concerns raised on her behalf did not lead to the intervention she needed,” as well as a complete overhaul of the child-welfare agency. The report also describes scrutiny of the county agency after other child deaths, citing a Mercury News count that seven children involved with county social workers reportedly died since 2022. That figure is the newspaper’s reported count, not a published statistical series.
