No single laptop brand can be named the most reliable for everyone in 2026 based on the public survey results available. Consumer Reports measures predicted problems within three years among its members; Which? surveys UK owners about faults over as long as seven years. Their populations and measures differ, and neither supports a universal cross-market winner.

What the 2026 reliability evidence says

The strongest public evidence comes from two consumer-survey programs, but they answer different questions. Consumer Reports estimates the likelihood of problems by the end of a laptop’s third year. Which? reports UK owners’ experiences, including the share of laptops that developed a fault within seven years. Those results should not be merged into one league table.

Consumer Reports: predicted problems within three years

In an article updated January 8, 2026, Consumer Reports described an analysis of surveys conducted in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The surveys covered 75,923 portable computers bought new between 2019 and 2025. Consumer Reports uses a statistical model to estimate how often problems are likely to arise by the end of the third year of ownership. This is a prediction based on members’ reported experiences, not a controlled failure test or a promise about an individual laptop. Read Consumer Reports’ laptop reliability analysis.

Across the laptops in its covered data, Consumer Reports says 16% broke or stopped working as they should within three years. Nearly six in ten broken laptops were taken in for repair, and 22% of laptops bought in the covered period had an extended warranty or service contract. These are overall figures, not brand-specific rates.

Which?: UK owners’ faults over time

Which?’s August 4, 2026 article reports an online survey from February and March 2026 of 15,755 technology owners, including 6,971 laptop owners. The survey table includes reliability stars, the proportion faulty within the first seven years, average time to first fault, and customer score. The detailed brand values are available only to members.

Which? publicly identifies Toshiba as the least reliable brand in that survey, with more than a third of its laptops developing some fault within seven years. It also notes that Toshiba no longer sells laptops in the UK. The public table is ordered by customer score, and its detailed values are hidden, so it does not establish which brand ranked first. Why there is no universal winner

A reliability result depends on what is counted, how long owners are followed, and who took part. A predicted chance of a problem by year three is not directly comparable with the share of owners reporting a fault within seven years. Consumer Reports’ results reflect its members; Which?’s survey is UK-focused. A ranking from one survey therefore does not prove that a brand will be more reliable in another country, over a different period, or for every model.

Brand averages are useful for narrowing a shortlist, not for predicting the experience with a specific laptop. Consumer Reports’ brand-selection methodology requires at least three tested models per brand and good-to-great reliability scores for inclusion in its brand analysis. Its Best Laptop Brands article says its ratings cover more than 150 current models. A brand can sell product families with different designs, components, workloads, and repair options. How to use reliability surveys when choosing a laptop

  1. Compare like with like. Check the survey’s market, respondent group, fault definition, and time period. Do not treat a three-year prediction as equivalent to a seven-year owner-reported fault rate.
  2. Use the brand result to shortlist, then investigate the exact model. Look for model-specific test results and recurring fault reports, and consider whether the machine is suited to your workload.
  3. Check repair and warranty options where you live. Confirm whether the battery and other parts can be serviced, how warranty coverage works, and whether repair service is available in your country.
  4. Check software support as well as hardware. A laptop that still turns on can become less useful or less secure when updates end or it cannot move to a supported operating system. Consider the manufacturer’s stated support period before buying.

Reliability also depends on repairability and support

Which?’s September 23, 2026 technology-longevity article draws on a March 2026 survey of 15,755 people covering 43,027 products. It identifies battery failure as the most common hardware fault across laptops, phones, and tablets. That makes battery serviceability a practical point to check when comparing models.

Among laptop owners in that reporting who chose to go ahead with a repair, 84% said they were satisfied with the result. This describes satisfaction among people who proceeded with repairs; it is not the proportion of laptops that fail, nor the odds that a future repair will succeed. Which? also says a laptop can lose practical value when software updates end or an older device cannot move to a supported operating system. Hardware fault rates alone therefore do not capture the full length of time a laptop remains useful and secure.
