The evidence supports a mainstream range, not one proven global sales leader: Compal Electronics identifies 14-inch and 15.6-inch laptop panels as mainstream, while HP describes 15–16 inches as popular for mainstream laptops. For most buyers, 14 to 16 inches is a practical place to start; your ideal size depends on how often you carry the laptop and how much workspace you need.
Which laptop screen size is most popular?
There is no established, current worldwide unit-sales ranking that proves one exact laptop screen size is the most popular. Compal Electronics’ 2024 Annual Report, published in 2025, says that “14-inch and 15.6-inch laptop panels remain the mainstream sizes.” HP’s United States laptop-size guide describes 15–16 inches as a popular mainstream range. These sources support the conclusion that laptops around 14 to 16 inches are mainstream, but they do not establish a single-size sales winner.
The two descriptions use different groupings: Compal names 14 inches and 15.6 inches, while HP describes broader ranges. Treat them as buying guidance and market characterization, not a definitive global ranking.

What does laptop screen size measure?
Screen size is the diagonal distance across the visible display, from one corner to the opposite corner; it does not include the bezel. It is separate from resolution, which counts the pixels used to form the image. A larger screen is not automatically sharper: resolution and panel characteristics matter too. How the main size ranges compare

How to choose a size for your needs
- Choose for carrying first. If the laptop goes with you every day, compare smaller models and check their actual weight and chassis dimensions rather than relying on the diagonal alone.
- Consider your typical work. For side-by-side windows, spreadsheets, or a more spacious keyboard, start by comparing 15–16-inch options. If portability and workspace both matter, compare 14–15-inch models.
- Check the whole display specification. Compare resolution and panel type as well as diagonal size; a bigger display by itself does not mean a sharper image.
- Check battery life and keyboard layout. These affect everyday use and are not determined by screen size.
- Think about where you work. If the laptop mostly stays on a desk and you value a large built-in display, consider 17–18 inches; if you move around often, account for the larger chassis.
Before choosing between two laptops, compare their published dimensions, weight, display resolution and panel type, battery-life information, and keyboard layout. HP’s guide offers additional general size guidance, but the specifications of each model should decide the comparison.

What the size trend does—and does not—tell you
Compal’s report also says OLED laptop panels had a 3.1% shipment penetration rate in 2024. It reports that 16:10 panels held 46.0% market share in 2024 and anticipated 53.2% in 2025; the latter is a forecast in the report, not a verified 2025 result. Neither figure ranks laptop screen sizes by sales, so neither can identify a most popular diagonal.
