Photographer Chris Gurton uses ground-level images and a drone to show the fields, machinery and people involved in British agriculture—work most shoppers never see. Based in rural Suffolk, he photographs farming as a personal pursuit alongside his day job, with the ambition of making it his full-time career. His perspective is about the skill and effort behind food production, not a comprehensive portrait of the UK food system.
Why Gurton photographs agriculture
“Most people only see the finished product on the supermarket shelves,” Gurton told Digital Camera World in an interview published 1 October 2026. He wanted to photograph what happens at the start of food production and tell stories about people and landscapes that shoppers may not encounter directly.
Growing up, he was drawn to aerial photography, including the work of French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand and the book The Earth From the Air. Gurton says that seeing familiar places from above made them look different. Hiring a helicopter or light aircraft once put aerial images beyond his reach; consumer camera drones gave him a more accessible way to explore that viewpoint. Living among farmland in Suffolk brought the subject close to home.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor Gurton, aerial farm photography is not simply a way to make machinery look striking. The elevated perspective can reveal patterns in fields, textures in crops and the scale of agricultural landscapes. His ground-level work adds people, equipment and detail to that wider view. Together, the perspectives make farming’s setting and activity more legible without claiming to represent every farm or stage of the food chain.

How he works with farmers and machinery
Access depends on trust. “Trust is incredibly important because I’m often photographing people while they’re concentrating on complex tasks with large machinery,” Gurton told Digital Camera World. He says time spent on farms has deepened his appreciation of the skill, dedication and long hours involved in producing food. His farm photography has also led to images for farmers’ websites, social media and promotional materials.
Start with permission and safety
Gurton’s advice is to ask the farmer or landowner before entering a field, particularly during harvest, when several machines may be operating. Keep clear of machinery, stay alert to what is moving around you, and do not distract operators. A photograph is never worth creating a hazard or pulling a worker’s attention away from a complex task.
Learn the rhythm of the work
Understanding what the crew is doing helps a photographer anticipate where a machine will move or when crops may be unloaded. That knowledge makes it easier to be ready for a moment rather than react too late. It also keeps the image grounded in the job instead of treating machinery as an isolated prop.

Wait for light, context and the right moment
Gurton looks for changing light, including golden hour and the period after sunset, when dust and machinery can take on a different mood. He also advises including details that explain the scene: crop lines, sky, birds and people working together. Weather, machinery and plans can change, so patience may mean waiting or returning another day.
The cameras he uses—and what he values more
Gurton says his main ground camera is a Nikon D7500 DSLR, paired with lenses ranging from wide-angle and a 35mm prime to a 500mm telephoto. For overhead views, he uses a DJI Air 2S camera drone to capture patterns, textures and the scale of farmland. This is his reported setup, not a product comparison or a recommendation that other photographers need the same kit.
He argues that a compelling photograph does not depend on owning the newest camera. In his view, light, composition, timing and the story matter more. A separate 2026 interview describes one specific image made with the DJI Air 2S and an ND128 filter at 1/8 second; that is an example of a particular exposure, not a general settings prescription. Global Lens Photography Awards’ interview was published 4 August 2026.

What his awards establish
Awards are best described with their category and stage intact. Digital Camera World reports that Gurton received an honourable mention in the 2025 International Photography Awards’ Special Night Photography category for “Harvesting at Night.” The IPA certificate instead records an “IPA 2025 Official Selection” in “Special, Night Photography” for “Harvesting by Night.” The title wording differs between the sources, so the certificate’s wording should be used when citing the certificate.
Digital Camera World also reports that Gurton placed second in the 2026 Lumearth Photo Awards Agriculture and Rural category for “Farming in East Anglia.” The Lumearth 2026 page confirms his name, country and image on its initial shortlist; that page does not itself establish the reported second-place result.
Gurton’s own news page lists additional recognition, including a 2026 drone-category award whose name differs from the wording used on his homepage. Those are his own published claims, so they should not be conflated with independently confirmed results.

A personal view of the work behind food
Gurton’s photographs make the case for looking beyond the retail endpoint: food production begins in working landscapes, with people coordinating machinery and responding to conditions that do not follow a camera’s schedule. His images and advice come from one photographer’s experience in Suffolk, rather than data about production, labour or supply chains. He says photography is not yet his full-time work, but his ambition is to build a career telling stories about the people and landscapes behind food production.
