Most Apple Intelligence features do not require you to own both a Mac and an iPhone. Apple lists eligible iPhones and Macs separately, though it says some features need an iPhone nearby. iPhone Mirroring is different: it uses a nearby iPhone that you control from a Mac. Apple’s published compatibility information does not provide a complete list of every feature exclusive to iOS 27 or macOS 27.
Does Apple Intelligence require both a Mac and an iPhone?
No—not as a general requirement. Apple publishes separate device eligibility lists for Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 and macOS 27. An eligible iPhone can use supported features without an eligible Mac, and an eligible Mac can use supported features without an eligible iPhone. Apple does say that some Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone nearby, so the answer can differ by feature.
Eligible devices
| Platform | Apple’s published general eligibility | Does the other device have to be nearby? |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 27 | iPhone 16 models or later; Apple also lists iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max among eligible devices. | Not as a general requirement. Some features may require an iPhone nearby. |
| macOS 27 | Mac computers with an M1 chip or later. | Not as a general requirement. Apple says some features require an iPhone nearby. |
Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement names iPhone 18 Pro, which falls within the published iPhone 16-or-later eligibility range. That does not mean every feature is available in every place or language: eligibility for the platform is separate from feature-specific conditions.

Language, region, and usage limits
Apple lists support for English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, simplified and traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Some features may not be available in every language or region. Apple also describes restrictions for China mainland that depend on the precise purchase-location and account-region conditions; check its current eligibility information for the specific case rather than applying a blanket rule.

Some Apple Intelligence features that use server-side models have daily usage limits. Apple does not publish a fixed quota in the cited announcement; limits can vary with the feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors.
What does iPhone Mirroring need from both devices?
iPhone Mirroring is explicitly a two-device feature: it lets you control a nearby iPhone from a Mac, receive iPhone notifications on the Mac, and follow Live Activities. The Mac is the control surface; the iPhone remains the device being mirrored.

| Requirement or capability | Apple’s stated condition |
|---|---|
| Mac software | macOS 15 or later |
| iPhone software | iOS 18 or later |
| Connection and account | Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on both devices, and both signed in to the same Apple Account |
| Location and phone state | The iPhone must be nearby and locked |
| Regional availability | Unavailable in the European Union, according to Apple’s current instructions |
| Limits while mirroring | Camera and microphone capabilities are not compatible. Continuity Camera and AirPlay are among the Continuity features unavailable on the Mac while Mirroring is in use. |
These requirements are not specific to macOS 27: Apple’s current instructions set the minimums at macOS 15 and iOS 18. Mirroring also does not transfer every iPhone function to the Mac; Apple identifies camera and microphone support and certain Continuity features as limitations.
Can iPhone apps run on a Mac without an iPhone?
Some can. Apple’s developer documentation says unmodified iPhone and iPad apps can run on Apple silicon Macs. That describes a possibility for compatible apps, not a guarantee that every iPhone app is offered on Mac or works well there. A Mac running an app locally is also different from using iPhone Mirroring, which controls the nearby phone.

Why an app may not be suitable for Mac
- Hardware dependencies: An app may rely on iPhone hardware that the Mac does not have, such as an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, depth-sensing camera, or GPS.
- Software dependencies: It may use a framework or feature that is unavailable in macOS.
- Touch-first interaction: An interface built around touch may not translate well to Mac input.
Those are compatibility considerations, not a list of particular apps. Apple’s developer guidance does not establish that any named app is available on a Mac.

The published compatibility information supports a limited, practical distinction rather than a complete iOS-only and macOS-only catalog:

- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
- Apple Intelligence: It is available on eligible devices on both platforms, with separate eligibility requirements. Some features need an iPhone nearby, but Apple does not say that users generally need both devices.
- iPhone Mirroring: It requires both a Mac and a nearby iPhone, with the Mac used to control the phone.
- iPhone and iPad apps on Mac: Some unmodified apps may run locally on Apple silicon Macs, subject to hardware, software, and interaction compatibility.
Apple’s published material cited here does not enumerate every feature limited to iOS 27 or macOS 27. It therefore cannot support a reliable exhaustive list of what works on only one platform. For an individual capability, check its own device, software, language, and regional requirements instead of assuming that a feature available on one Apple platform automatically transfers to the other.
