Liu Kang is generally the closest answer to the main character in Mortal Kombat. The franchise’s official character profile calls him “THE CHOSEN ONE” and a “Champion of Earthrealm,” while the story of Mortal Kombat 1 places him at the center of a newly created universe.
Why Liu Kang is the main character most often associated with Mortal Kombat
Liu Kang is the series’ recurring heroic figure, rather than the exclusive protagonist of every game or adaptation. The official Mortal Kombat 30th Anniversary character profile identifies him as a Shaolin monk and Champion of Earthrealm, and gives him the epithet “THE CHOSEN ONE.”
The profile says Liu Kang was adopted and trained by the Shaolin order, then defeated Shang Tsung and saved Earthrealm. Those defining victories make him the clearest franchise-wide answer when someone asks who the main character is.
What Liu Kang’s role is in Mortal Kombat 1
In Mortal Kombat 1, Liu Kang is Fire God and creator of the reborn Mortal Kombat Universe. The game’s official FAQ describes its cinematic Story mode as featuring reimagined rivalries and original backstories for a wide-ranging cast. Its official game page frames the campaign around Liu Kang’s vision and forces that threaten his New Era.

No single lead can be applied to every Mortal Kombat game, film, or other adaptation. The franchise features a large ensemble, and individual stories can give different characters major roles. Liu Kang is the best general answer because of his recurring heroic status; for Mortal Kombat 1, he is especially central as the creator of the New Era.
