The original Mortal Kombat debuted in arcades in 1992 without Jean-Claude Van Damme, even though co-creators Ed Boon and John Tobias had considered building the game around the actor. Tobias later said the possibility of Van Damme’s involvement helped shape Johnny Cage, the Hollywood movie star who became one of the game’s characters. Mortal Kombat was inducted into The Strong National Museum of Play’s World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2019.
What happened to the Van Damme plan?
Boon and Tobias initially considered centering Mortal Kombat on Van Damme, but the actor had already signed a deal to star in another video game, according to The Strong National Museum of Play. The museum does not identify that other game or describe the deal’s terms.

In a 2020 interview with David L. Craddock for Game Developer, Tobias recalled that the team moved on from the idea early. He said, “We pivoted away from JCVD pretty early in the process. I believe we had already developed the core of our game’s premise while we were in those talks, but the idea was that JCVD would either play as himself or as one of the characters in our story.” Tobias’s recollection does not establish that Van Damme personally rejected the project; it establishes that the team moved on while he had another game deal.

Was Johnny Cage based on Jean-Claude Van Damme?
Johnny Cage was influenced by the possibility of Van Damme joining the game, but Tobias’s account does not say that Cage was simply a direct portrayal of the actor. Tobias said the character’s status as a Hollywood movie star “was directly influenced by the possibility of JCVD’s involvement.” The distinction matters: the abandoned concept helped inform Cage, while the finished game featured its own character rather than Van Damme as himself.

When did the original Mortal Kombat come out?
The original Mortal Kombat is a 1992 arcade release. The Strong records the year; a 2026 Men’s Journal anniversary article gives October 8, 1992, as the date it arrived in American arcades. That specific day is attributed to the anniversary article, rather than to the museum’s Hall of Fame entry.
What made Mortal Kombat stand out?
The Strong describes the game as a one-on-one martial arts fighter set around a tournament on a fictional island in Earthrealm. Players chose from seven characters, represented by digitized images of real actors, each with individual special moves and a backstory. Their goal was to defeat the sorcerer Shang Tsung.

The digitized-actor look differed from the cartoon-style graphics common in other fighting games. Its exaggerated finishing moves, called fatalities, also became a defining feature. The museum cites Chinese mythology, kung fu, and action films including Big Trouble in Little China among the game’s influences.

The fatalities helped make the game part of a wider public and congressional debate over violence in video games. The Strong says industry scrutiny led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) in 1994. The game’s legacy includes both that controversy and the appeal of its gameplay, characters, and sequels.

When did Mortal Kombat enter the Video Game Hall of Fame?
The Strong National Museum of Play inducted Mortal Kombat into its World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2019. The induction year is separate from the game’s 1992 release: the original arcade game arrived first, and its recognition by the Hall of Fame came decades later.
