A gas-phase boron cluster can reproduce a pair of bonding motifs usually associated with transition-metal chemistry. In the reported B9O− anion, a central boron atom bonds to a boronyl ligand and interacts with an aromatic seven-boron unit. This is a structural and bonding discovery—not evidence that the cluster is already a catalyst or that boron has become a transition metal.

What is the B9O− cluster?

B9O− is a negatively charged cluster containing nine boron atoms and one oxygen atom. The oxygen-containing fragment is described as a boronyl ligand. The species was made and studied in the gas phase, rather than as a demonstrated, ready-to-use material in a solution or device.

In the most stable isomer discussed, the atoms form an unusual umbrella-like arrangement. A central boron atom sits between the boronyl ligand and an aromatic B7 unit, creating the setting for the unusual bonding interpretation.

How did researchers identify its structure?

The 2021 study combined cluster synthesis, photoelectron spectroscopy and calculations. Chemistry World reports that the researchers generated B9O− clusters by laser vaporising a bismuth-based target; residual impurities supplied oxygen. Photoelectron spectroscopy indicated contributions from two isomers. The researchers then examined the calculated global minimum, identifying the umbrella-like structure as the most stable isomer discussed.

Calculated spectra for the isomers agreed well with the experimentally observed spectra, according to Chemistry World. The agreement supports the structural assignment by connecting predicted electronic behavior with the measured signal; the structure is not simply inferred from a visual model. Chemistry World’s 2021 report describes the study and cites the original paper by W. J. Tian and colleagues in Chemical Science.

What makes the bonding metallomimetic?

The central boron participates in two bonding arrangements that invite comparison with transition-metal chemistry. It forms a σ-bond to the boronyl ligand, and it interacts with the aromatic B7 unit in an η7 arrangement—meaning the ligand engages through seven boron atoms.

The authors’ bonding analysis describes the central boron as sharing valence electrons with the B7 unit, producing a doubly aromatic system. That electronic arrangement helps explain the cluster’s stability and is the basis for calling its bonding metallomimetic: it resembles selected behaviors associated with metals, without making boron a transition metal or establishing that the cluster reproduces transition-metal chemistry broadly.

The comparison has two useful points of reference:

  • Ligand bonding: In a borylene dicarbonyl complex, a monovalent boron can coordinate two carbon monoxide ligands through donor–acceptor bonds, an arrangement analogous to transition-metal carbonyl chemistry. In B9O−, the notable partners are instead a boronyl ligand and an aromatic boron-based ligand.
  • Aromatic-ligand interaction: Transition metals can form sandwich-type complexes with aromatic arene ligands. The B9O− structure presents an unusual interaction between central boron and an aromatic B7 ligand. Chemistry World characterized this boron-based bonding motif as unprecedented at the time of its 2021 report.

Does the cluster show catalytic activity?

No catalytic performance is established in the reported result. The evidence concerns the structure and bonding of a gas-phase anion; it does not demonstrate substrate activation, a catalytic cycle or repeated turnover for this cluster.

Julia Stauber, an inorganic chemist at the University of California, Los Angeles, told Chemistry World that the anion’s unusual structural and electronic properties “are certain to provide insight into new and exciting classes of metallomimetic boron clusters” with the “potential to display reactivity and coordination properties” associated with transition-metal chemistry. Her wording is prospective: potential future reactivity is not a report that those properties have already been demonstrated for B9O−.

How does this fit into p-block chemistry?

The result sits alongside a broader interest in element–ligand cooperativity, in which a p-block element and its surrounding molecular framework work together during substrate activation or a catalytic cycle. A 2020 review by Yael Ginzburg, Lukas M. Sigmund and Lutz Greb discusses that field, including analogies with transition-metal ligand cooperativity and its conceptual boundary with intramolecular frustrated Lewis pair chemistry.

Inorganic and Organic Chemistry Model Student Kit (281 Pieces) - MM-007 with Atom Configurations, Bonds and Orbitals
  • Great All-In-One Molecular Model kit for chemistry students at any age/stage
  • Contains 281 pieces with 120 atoms and 160 Bond parts for both simple and complex structures
  • Includes orbitals to model free lone pairs of electrons
  • Includes multiple geometric configurations of carbons, metals and other atoms. Includes bonds to display ligands in coordination chemistry
  • Highly durable plastic that are color coded to chemistry universal standards. Molecular tool included to quickly disassemble molecules and atoms connectors

That context helps explain why chemists study metal-like behavior in p-block elements, but it does not change what the B9O− result establishes. The cluster study is a bonding discovery, not evidence that this particular species performs cooperative catalysis. The 2020 review provides the broader discussion of element–ligand cooperativity.
