Moonring is a free-to-play, turn-based fantasy RPG on Steam, made by Dene Carter, whom PC Gamer identifies as a co-creator of Fable. The “Zelda” comparison and “10/10” rating in the headline are not established by the available sources: Moonring is a tile-based, old-school RPG, and Steam’s positive-review percentage is not a critic score.
What Moonring is—and what the headline gets wrong
Steam describes Moonring as a dark-fantasy, turn-based blend of classic RPGs and roguelikes, presented in a neon style. It is set in Caldera, a world shaped by five moons and strange gods. You play as the “Dreamless,” free to choose a destiny, challenge the established order, or seek to become Archon.
The game is listed as free to play, developed and published by Fluttermind, LLC, and released on 28 September 2023. It supports Windows and macOS, is single-player, and lists English interface text. Steam store listing

How Moonring plays
Open-world exploration with little handholding
Moonring uses a large, hand-designed open world and tile-based movement. Its creator describes it as a love letter to older games, praising its bright sprites against stark black backgrounds, true open-world play, and lack of handholding. That design may appeal if you enjoy discovering systems and routes for yourself; it may be a poor fit if you expect frequent prompts or a tightly guided quest path.
Reconfiguring dungeons and turn-based combat
The overworld is designed by hand, while dungeons reconfigure when you leave them or die. Steam says dungeon generation uses the character’s name. Combat is turn-based rather than real-time action, so the available information does not support treating Moonring as a Zelda-style action adventure.

Gifts, enemies, sailing, and music

It also advertises sailing, ship-to-ship combat and boarding, plus a dungeon-synth soundtrack with more than 50 tracks. These are the publisher’s listed features, not independently audited counts.
