Monocle lets you register compatible RTSP/RTP IP camera feeds and view them on supported Alexa screen devices. Its documented Alexa commands show or hide a feed; the official Monocle material cited here does not establish Arduino integration or camera pan/tilt control. Treat the Arduino part of the original title as unverified, not as a supported setup feature.
What Monocle does
Monocle connects camera-feed details to its Alexa Smart Home Skill. You create an account, register a feed, link the skill in Alexa, discover devices, then ask Alexa to display a camera by its registered name. Monocle describes itself as an aggregator of camera-feed information; when you request a feed, its servers provide connection details and the Alexa device connects to the stream over the local network (Monocle FAQ; Monocle).
This is live viewing, not general camera control. Monocle’s documented voice actions cover showing and hiding feeds; the cited documentation does not describe camera movement or other controls.
Does Monocle work with your IP camera?
The camera must expose a compatible RTSP/RTP stream. Monocle’s published requirements include H.264 video, AAC or G.711 audio, HTTP Digest authentication, the RTSP DESCRIBE, SETUP, PLAY, and TEARDOWN commands, and an RTSP URI response within six seconds. Amazon’s camera-skill documentation also specifies RTSP command and response-time requirements (Monocle compatibility; Amazon CameraStreamController documentation).

Monocle’s compatibility page names Amcrest, Axis, Dahua, Hikvision, Samsung, and Ubiquiti as examples reported working. It also flags some Foscam and Reolink models as requiring Gateway and lists model-specific issues. The list is manually curated, incomplete, and may be inaccurate, so a brand match is not a guarantee. Check the exact model, firmware, stream path, codecs, and Alexa device before relying on it.
Cameras without RTSP access do not fit this workflow. Monocle names Nest/Dropcam, Arlo, and Reolink Argus as examples of proprietary camera families that lack the required access. A manufacturer’s separate Alexa skill, if available, is a different integration (Monocle FAQ; Monocle camera setup).

How to view an IP camera on an Echo Show
- Check the Alexa device and region. Confirm that your exact device generation and region are supported in Monocle’s current compatibility information.
- Confirm the camera stream requirements. Verify RTSP/RTP access, H.264 video, a supported audio option, Digest authentication, and the required RTSP behavior.
- Test the stream before adding Alexa. Open the RTSP URL with its credentials in a media player. If it fails there, correct the stream path, account, or camera settings first.
- Register the feed in Monocle. Enter the stream URL and codec details in the feed setup. When the camera supports multiple accounts, use a dedicated view-only account rather than anonymous access (Monocle camera setup; Monocle FAQ).
- Link and discover. Add the Monocle Alexa skill in the Alexa app, link your account, then run device discovery.
- Use the registered camera name. Say, for example, “Alexa, show the nursery” or “Alexa, show the feed from the [device name].” Monocle also documents commands to hide a feed (Monocle Alexa commands).
When Monocle Gateway is needed
Gateway is a local-network service that bridges Alexa devices and local cameras, routing RTSP communication over TLS on port 443. Monocle says newer Fire TV devices and some newer Fire Tablets require Gateway because Amazon enforces encrypted transport, port 443, and a fully qualified domain name with a valid SSL certificate. Gateway may also help with certain camera compatibility issues or network setups. Monocle documents installation options including Raspberry Pi (Monocle Gateway).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRequirements differ by Alexa model and generation. Monocle’s published device chart is generation-specific and should not be treated as a timeless compatibility guarantee. Check its current listing for the exact device, resolution support, and Gateway requirement before setup (Monocle compatibility).

Can you control an IP camera with Arduino through Monocle?
That connection is not established by the official Monocle material cited here. Those pages explain feed registration, Alexa discovery, Gateway, and voice commands to show or hide video; they do not provide an Arduino API, library, commands, or a supported way to pan, tilt, or otherwise control a camera. Do not treat Monocle’s Alexa viewing workflow as an Arduino integration tutorial.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting a camera that will not appear or stream
- It does not appear after discovery: Check that the Monocle skill is linked and that device discovery completed. Confirm the camera feed was registered with the name you are saying.
- The camera appears but video fails: Test the RTSP URL and credentials independently. Recheck the full path, authentication, H.264 setting, and audio codec; some camera models or G.711 audio configurations may behave differently.
- The stream works elsewhere but not on this Alexa device: Check whether the exact device generation requires Gateway, then consult the model-specific compatibility notes.
- The camera is a cloud-only or proprietary model: If it does not expose RTSP, this Monocle workflow is not suitable. Check whether the manufacturer offers its own Alexa integration instead.
Make stream and compatibility checks before changing network exposure; anonymous camera access is not Monocle’s recommended setup.
