A mono file contains one audio channel. “Mono” describes the channel count—not a codec, file extension, sample rate, or bit depth. If you need one-channel audio, first check whether your source is already mono; otherwise, choose whether to keep stereo, split its left and right channels into separate mono files, or combine them into one mono signal.
What does “mono” mean in an audio file?
Mono, short for monophonic, means that audio has one channel. Stereo has two channels, commonly designated left and right. WAV is a file format family; the extension alone does not tell you whether a particular file contains one channel or two.
Channel count is separate from other audio properties. A mono file can use different codecs, sample rates, and bit depths. Those settings, along with encoding choices, affect compatibility and storage.

How can you tell whether a file is mono?
Check the audio information displayed by your media player, editor, or file-information panel. If that does not show the channel count, use an audio probe or inspect the file in a program that reports its stream properties. Do this before converting: a WAV file, for example, might be mono or stereo.

Also distinguish one multichannel file from a group of mono files. In the latter arrangement, each file represents one channel from a larger recording. ITU-R’s guidance on multichannel WAV files describes both ordinary channel configurations and multiple-mono files; where metadata is missing, filenames may offer clues to each file’s channel identity (ITU-R Report BS.2388-7; detailed multiple-mono guidance appears in the 2024 BS.2388-5 text).
Should you keep stereo, split it, or downmix it?
Choose based on what the destination accepts and whether the channels contain distinct information. Splitting preserves the two channels as separate files; downmixing combines them into one channel. If you need the left-right differences in the recording, keep stereo or split it rather than casually downmixing.

| Choice | What you get | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Keep stereo | One file with left and right channels | The destination accepts stereo and you want to preserve the original channel arrangement. |
| Split to mono | Separate one-channel files, usually one for each original channel | You need to process channels independently or the destination expects mono inputs. |
| Downmix to mono | One one-channel signal combined from the source channels | The destination specifically needs one channel and a combined signal is appropriate. |
Google Cloud’s Speech-to-Text v1 documentation is one example of a service-specific requirement: its guidance calls for single-channel mono input and describes extracting mono files from stereo or multitrack audio. For a stereo source, it documents either splitting into two mono files or downmixing; for 5.1 multitrack audio, it gives six mono files as the split example. These instructions apply to that Cloud Speech-to-Text workflow, not to all speech-recognition tools (Google Cloud: Optimize audio files for Cloud Speech-to-Text).

How do multiple mono files relate to multichannel recordings?
A multichannel recording may be stored as one file containing multiple tracks, or as separate mono files with one channel per file. The arrangement affects how you import, organize, and edit the material. Sound Devices describes this distinction for its 7-Series recorders: its WAV mono option creates separate data files for individual recorded tracks, while WAV poly stores multiple tracks in one data file. That example applies to the 7-Series family; naming and behavior can vary between products (Sound Devices: WAV Mono vs. WAV Poly, updated June 18, 2019).
Unusual channel counts can be interpreted in more than one way. When handling multichannel production or broadcast material, use accompanying metadata and the recording’s context to identify channel roles rather than guessing from the number of files alone.

Do mono files take less space?
Fewer channels can mean less audio data, but file size also depends on encoding, sample rate, bit depth, and other settings. Apple’s iTunes for Windows 12.13 import-settings guide says mono files are about half the size of stereo files in that workflow. Treat this as Apple’s practical comparison for its import settings, not a universal formula for every format or encoder (Apple Support: Choose import settings in iTunes on PC).

Some editors can handle paired mono files individually or interpret them together as a stereo pair, but the exact behavior depends on the application and version. The RX 6 manual documents both options for certain paired filename suffixes; because that documentation is for a legacy version, check the manual for the editor version you use rather than assuming the same controls or naming rules still apply (iZotope RX 6 Help Documentation).
