Moment announced an anamorphic smartphone lens on March 27, 2018, pitching it to Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy owners through Kickstarter. Contemporary coverage put the lens at about $149–$150 and reported a $145 early bundle with the required case; shipping was expected in June 2018. Those were historical campaign terms, not an offer still available today. Moment now sells newer T-Series anamorphic lenses, so current buyers need to check their phone’s model-specific mount requirements.

What Moment announced in 2018

The announcement was for an add-on optical lens intended to give compatible phones a wider, anamorphic image. Droid Life reported the March 27, 2018 launch and its Pixel and Galaxy focus. Android Authority reported an approximately $149 lens price, a $145 lens-and-case Kickstarter offer, and an expected June 2018 shipping date. The shipping date was a projection, not confirmation that rewards arrived then. (Droid Life; Android Authority)

Kickstarter pledges are support for a project rather than ordinary retail checkout. Kickstarter describes its funding as all-or-nothing; a pledge is not the same as buying an already stocked product. (Kickstarter) The original campaign is historical, and the available contemporary reporting does not establish its final funding totals or fulfillment record.

What an anamorphic lens does

An anamorphic lens optically compresses the horizontal scene as it is recorded. Desqueeze the footage in a compatible camera app or editor and the image returns to its intended wide proportions. Contemporary coverage described the 2018 lens as producing a 2.40:1 widescreen result after desqueeze. That ratio describes the intended corrected image, not necessarily the raw file’s dimensions. Moment 1.55x Anamorphic Mobile Lens – Capture True Cinematic Footage (Blue Flare, T-Series II)
  • Requires a Moment Case (Sold Separately) – This lens must be used with a Moment Camera Case featuring a T-Series Drop-In Lens Mount to ensure proper alignment and image quality.
  • T-Series Compatibility – T-Series works with iPhone 14, Pixel 8 & newer phones.
  • True Cinematic Widescreen – The 1.55x Anamorphic Lens delivers an ultra-wide 2.76:1 aspect ratio, giving your footage a professional widescreen look without digital cropping. Perfect for mobile filmmakers who want authentic anamorphic framing.
  • Classic Hollywood Lens Flares – Choose Gold Flare for warm, natural tones or Blue Flare for high-contrast, sci-fi-inspired flares. Designed to replicate the iconic look of anamorphic cinema, straight from your phone.
  • Compatible with 67mm Filters – Attach ND, CPL, or diffusion filters using our 67mm Lens Filter Mount (sold separately) to further enhance your shots.

This is different from adding black bars to ordinary footage. Letterboxing masks or crops part of an existing frame; an anamorphic attachment changes the optical capture and records a squeezed image that must be interpreted correctly. Depending on the lens and shot, anamorphic rendering can bring horizontal flare streaks, oval out-of-focus highlights, a wider field of view, and distinctive edge behavior. Those effects are not guaranteed in every scene. (Android Authority)

What the old price did—and did not—tell buyers

The reported $145 Kickstarter tier included a lens and required camera case, while the lens alone was described at roughly $149–$150. Treat these as reported early-campaign prices, not today’s prices or a complete landed-cost figure. The reporting does not establish the full reward table, shipping and tax charges, or which exact phone models were covered by each tier.

  • Check whether a pledge tier includes a lens only or the necessary case or mount as well.
  • Confirm that the reward names your exact phone model; “Galaxy” and “Pixel” do not mean every generation or variant.
  • Account for shipping, tax, and any separate software or editing needs.
  • Distinguish an estimated ship date from evidence of actual delivery.

Why compatibility depends on more than Android

An external lens must line up with the phone’s camera at the correct distance and avoid blocking nearby cameras. A case can fit a phone yet still fail to align with a lens mount. Camera apps may also crop the image or switch among cameras, changing whether the attachment remains properly aligned. The 2018 Pixel and Galaxy positioning should not be read as universal support for Android phones.

  • PRO OPTICAL CONTROL ON THE GO: Cut glare off water and glass, execute long exposures in daylight, balance harsh sunsets, or soften digital skin highlights in-camera—delivering real optical results digital editing can’t replicate.

Moment’s current guidance reflects those model-specific differences: Pixel 10 Pro series uses a T-Series lens with a stick-on mount; Pixel 7, 8, and 9 Pro models use a compatible case and drop-in mount; Galaxy S23 and newer, along with other newer Android phones, are directed to the universal mount. Check Moment’s live compatibility guidance for your precise model before buying, as phone generations and recommendations change. (Moment 1.33x lens and compatibility guidance)

How to shoot and desqueeze the footage

Real-time preview and capture

Use an app that supports anamorphic desqueeze if you want to frame with the image displayed in its intended proportions. Moment lists its Pro Camera app for iPhone and Blackmagic Camera for Android as options; this does not establish universal Android device support for the latter. (Moment lens guidance)

Correcting footage in editing

If your recording remains squeezed, apply the matching horizontal desqueeze factor in post-production, then verify the aspect ratio and export crop. The needed factor depends on the lens: 1.33x and 1.55x are not interchangeable. Make a short test recording first. Check that the preview and export agree, the image is not unnaturally narrow, and no unintended black bars or crop have appeared.

Mount and camera checks

  • Use the recommended mount and align the lens squarely over the intended phone camera.
  • Check that the chosen camera is not vignetting and that adjacent camera modules are not obstructed.
  • Keep the phone in a consistent camera mode; automatic switching or a changed crop can disrupt alignment.
  • Rotate the lens as appropriate for landscape or vertical framing, following the mount’s instructions.

How today’s Moment lenses differ

The 2018 Kickstarter lens should not be conflated with Moment’s current T-Series products. Moment currently lists its 1.33x Anamorphic Mobile Lens II at $150 USD, with stock and delivery estimates subject to change. The current page also describes 1.33x and 1.55x options differently: 1.33x is the more versatile, less distortion-prone choice, while 1.55x gives a stronger widescreen effect and somewhat softer margins. (Moment 1.33x; Moment 1.55x)

Current lens Moment’s stated character Better fit
1.33x More versatile, less edge distortion Mixed photo and video use or a subtler anamorphic look
1.55x More dramatic widescreen character, somewhat softer margins Video-focused users seeking a stronger anamorphic signature

These are current product descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Both models still require a compatible mounting solution and a workable desqueeze process. Moment identifies case/drop-in, stick-on, and universal mounting approaches, with the appropriate choice depending on the phone. (Moment mounting guidance)

Trade-offs to weigh before buying

  • Added workflow: You must desqueeze during capture or afterward, and verify the export.
  • Bulk and setup: The lens and mount make a phone less convenient for casual, quick shooting.
  • Compatibility risk: Camera layout, case geometry, app crops, and future phone changes can affect fit.
  • Stylized rendering: Flares and edge character can suit a short film or travel sequence but distract in documentary or product footage.
  • Limited scope: The lens changes optical rendering; it does not improve the phone’s sensor, autofocus, stabilization, audio, lighting, or dynamic range.

Who should consider a current lens?

A current Moment anamorphic lens makes most sense for a mobile filmmaker who wants optical character, has confirmed the exact phone-and-mount combination, and is comfortable managing squeezed footage. A 1.33x model is the more flexible starting point; 1.55x is for someone deliberately seeking a stronger effect. Casual users who want a simple camera upgrade, or anyone unwilling to mount and desqueeze footage, are better served by the phone’s native camera or a software crop or filter.

Before ordering, verify the exact phone and camera module, recommended mount, case fit, live-desqueeze app availability, and whether your editing software can correct the lens factor. Also recheck the live price, stock, returns, and warranty terms on Moment’s product page; these can change. (Moment current product page)
