Ian Russell, Molly Russell’s father, is asking UK cinema audiences to support the Molly Rose Foundation in a 30-second advert running before selected screenings of The Social Reckoning. The Guardian reported on 8 October 2026 that cinema advertising company Pearl & Dean offered the charity the space free of charge. In the advert, Russell says, “Instagram helped kill my daughter,” and argues that too little has changed to protect children online.
What does the Molly Russell cinema advert say?
As quoted by The Guardian, Russell’s advert says: “I’ve said it for years: Instagram helped kill my daughter. Too little has changed. Promises to deliver safety have failed. Algorithms still force streams of toxic content on to children. So if you agree harmful tech is unacceptable and bosses like Mark Zuckerberg should be held accountable, please support Molly Rose Foundation to stop companies like Meta endangering young people like Molly.”
The direct ask is to support the Molly Rose Foundation, which campaigns on online safety. The advert is scheduled to precede selected UK screenings of The Social Reckoning; the Guardian report does not provide a complete venue list. Check local cinema listings for screenings and schedules.

What did the Molly Russell inquest conclude?
At the 2022 inquest, coroner Andrew Walker concluded that Molly died from an act of self-harm while suffering depression and the negative effects of online content. The Molly Rose Foundation’s record of the inquest quotes Walker saying material Molly viewed on services including Instagram and Pinterest “was not safe” and “should not have been available for a child to see.” This is the coroner’s finding about the material and its effect; it should not be broadened into a finding that one platform alone caused her death.

After the inquest, Ian Russell said, as recorded by the Molly Rose Foundation: “Sadly, there are too many others similarly affected right now. At this point I just want to say however dark it seems, there is always hope.”
What do the figures about posts and harmful content measure?
Two figures cited in accounts of the case have different sources and definitions. They should not be combined into a single count.
Rank #2
| Figure | What it refers to | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 16,300 posts, including 2,100 related to depression, self-harm or suicide | Posts Molly saved, shared or liked in the six months before her death. The number describes interactions, not necessarily unique posts viewed. | ITV’s 2022 report of inquest evidence. |
| At least 2,000 posts | Posts said to have exposed Molly to harmful material in the six months before her death; the speaker said the true figure was likely higher. | Andy Burrows, Molly Rose Foundation chief executive, in UK Parliament oral evidence in 2026. This is a separately attributed account, not a reconciliation of ITV’s figures. |
| 48% of girls aged 13 to 17 | Girls who, according to the cited research, had encountered harmful content in the previous week. | Burrows described Molly Rose Foundation research to a parliamentary committee in April 2026. This is the Foundation’s research as presented by its chief executive, not an independently verified official statistic. |
ITV also reported that Pinterest emails sent to Molly included recommendation subject lines such as “10 depression pins you might like” and “new ideas for you in depression.”
How is the campaign connected to The Social Reckoning?
The Guardian reported that The Social Reckoning, a film about Mark Zuckerberg’s social-media empire, was due for UK cinema release on Friday, 9 October 2026. Russell’s advert uses selected screenings as a platform for the Foundation’s appeal; the film is the setting for the message, not the subject of the campaign. Screening availability varies, so check with cinemas for current local details.
Rank #3
Is Molly Vs the Machines the same film?
No. Molly Vs the Machines is a separate documentary about Ian Russell’s campaign and the circumstances surrounding Molly’s death. Screen Scotland reported that it premiered at Glasgow Film Festival on 1 March 2026 and was available through Channel 4 online. Amnesty International UK also reported its UK Channel 4 availability on 5 March 2026. Streaming availability can change; consult Channel 4 for current access.

The Guardian reported that Meta said its thoughts remained with Molly’s friends and family after the documentary’s release. It also described measures introduced since her death, including default private accounts for under-18s and restrictions on messaging and the content teenagers see. Those are Meta’s stated measures as relayed by the Guardian; the cited reporting does not independently establish how effective they are.
