A modular edge-AI computer separates compute, acceleration, I/O and storage so you can match the hardware to the sensors and deployment—and service or upgrade parts without replacing the entire system. ECRIN Systems’ myOPALE is one example of this approach; its product descriptions date from 2019, so verify current availability, revisions and specifications before choosing components.

What “modular edge AI” means

Edge AI runs inference near the devices or sensors that generate data, rather than sending every task to a remote data center. That can matter when a system has tight latency or bandwidth limits, must continue operating autonomously, or needs to keep data local. A modular design addresses a different but related concern: it divides the computer into replaceable or configurable blocks for processing, acceleration, connectivity and storage.

ECRIN’s myOPALE concept connects CPU, GPU and I/O blocks using PCIe-over-cable and Mini-SAS HD links. ECRIN describes the design as intended for industrial computers constrained by size, weight and power, with cooling kept with each block. Its materials also describe NVMe and JBOD/JBOF storage configurations. These are product-design claims, not a guarantee that every current configuration supports every option; confirm them against the datasheet for the exact revision.

Which building blocks to select

Choose components against the whole deployment: inference workload, sensors, environmental limits, power budget, service plan and software stack. The myOPALE examples illustrate the roles; they are not a universal bill of materials or confirmation of present-day stock.

Block Role and options described What to verify before purchase
CPU ECRIN’s myOPALE-CPU uses a COM Express carrier approach for industrial, defense, aerospace and robotics environments. ECRIN reports qualification for shock, vibration, temperature and humidity. Exact CPU and carrier revision, operating limits, qualification conditions, supported software and lifecycle commitments in the applicable datasheet.
GPU The myOPALE-GPU description pairs an MXM GPU mezzanine with a Mini-SAS HD adapter. ECRIN distinguishes commercial GeForce MXM options for shorter-life general applications from rugged Quadro-grade options for longer-life systems such as radar, sonar, aerospace, naval HMI and medical imaging. Supported accelerator and driver/software stack, performance for your model, thermal and power requirements, availability, and the vendor’s end-of-life policy. The product examples do not establish that a particular MXM module is currently available or compatible with a chosen revision.
I/O The myOPALE-mPCIe description accepts mPCIe and AcroPack modules for networking, wireless, CAN, avionics buses, serial I/O, FPGA and industrial signals. Optional PoE support can power a connected camera or another endpoint. Required protocols, port count, connector and module revision, bandwidth, PoE budget and whether the selected module works with the intended chassis and software.
Storage and chassis ECRIN describes SNIA-standard interconnects and NVMe/JBOD/JBOF storage patterns. The chassis, power input, cooling and connectors are deployment-dependent. Capacity and throughput needs, expansion path, physical depth, mounting, input power, cooling, environmental protection and service access.

How to decide what to buy

Start with the workload and accelerator

Estimate the inference workload and identify the accelerator and software stack that can run it. Compare not just accelerator performance but framework, driver and model support for the specific module and computer revision. A replaceable GPU is useful only if a replacement fits the electrical, thermal, mechanical and software constraints of the rest of the system.

Match the hardware to the environment

For a vehicle, aircraft, ship, factory floor or remote installation, check the stated shock, vibration, temperature and humidity limits for the exact configuration. Ask how those limits were qualified and whether they apply to the assembled computer, individual modules or both. Also confirm enclosure depth, cooling method, available input power and the condition in which the system must operate.

Plan I/O and storage around the sensors

List each sensor and endpoint, its protocol, connector, data rate and power requirement. Then choose I/O modules that cover those needs and leave room for realistic expansion. For storage, decide whether data must remain on the computer, be written to removable or networked storage, or scale through a JBOD/JBOF arrangement; check the actual supported topology rather than assuming that a standards-based link guarantees compatibility.

Check lifecycle and serviceability

Ask suppliers about expected availability, end-of-life notification, replacement-module compatibility and how a field technician will access and swap each block. A modular architecture can simplify repair or upgrades, but it does not by itself guarantee long-term module supply, compatible revisions or a fast repair.

Estimate integration effort

Compare the time and work needed to qualify the assembled system: carrier and module compatibility, cabling, cooling, drivers, enclosure, power and environmental testing. A compact off-the-shelf block may still require substantial system integration. Include that work in the decision rather than comparing component prices alone.

Build and qualify a rugged modular system

  1. Write deployment requirements. Record the inference workload, connected sensors, required interfaces, storage needs, power source, enclosure constraints, operating environment and service expectations.
  2. Select the compute and accelerator pairing. Confirm that the CPU, GPU module, interconnect and software stack are supported together for the product revision you intend to buy.
  3. Configure the I/O and storage. Map each sensor to a required module and connector, then check bandwidth, PoE or other power needs and the intended NVMe/JBOD/JBOF arrangement.
  4. Choose enclosure, cooling and input power as a system. Check that cables, connectors, modules and cooling fit in the available space and remain within the components’ specified operating limits.
  5. Obtain revision-specific documentation. Use the exact module and chassis datasheets to verify mechanical dimensions, interfaces, environmental ratings, supported options and lifecycle information. ECRIN’s cited myOPALE material is from 2019; do not assume its options or ratings describe a current revision.
  6. Qualify the assembled configuration. Validate the workload, I/O, thermal behavior and environmental requirements on the actual build. Module-level ratings do not automatically establish that a complete system meets the deployment requirements.
  7. Plan replacement before installation. Identify compatible spare modules, the procedure for replacing them and how the system will be restored and tested after service.

Is a Jetson Orin NX developer kit suitable for production?

No: the referenced implementation identifies the NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX developer kit as a rapid-development platform and explicitly warns against using the kit in production. It can be a starting point for evaluating an Orin NX-based prototype, but prototype suitability is not production qualification.

When a modular computer is not the whole answer

Modular components address the computer’s hardware boundaries. Larger deployments may also need managed networking, security, observability and workload scheduling across edge sites. Cisco’s Secure AI Factory, described with Cisco Unified Edge and NVIDIA GPU options, is an example of that broader infrastructure approach. It is not the same thing as buying a replaceable CPU, GPU and I/O chassis; compare it only if the requirement includes operating an edge platform across systems, not just assembling one rugged computer.
