A model-based expert system uses an explicit model of a domain—such as a system’s structure, function, or causal relationships—to interpret observations and infer possible states or faults. Unlike a system that relies chiefly on empirical rules, it reasons from an account of how the modeled system works. Model-based systems can also combine their models with rules.
What is a model-based expert system?
It is an expert system whose reasoning depends on a representation of the system or domain it is analyzing. That model may describe components and how they connect, how the system behaves, or the causal relationships among its parts. The system uses the model alongside observations to infer what state the system may be in, explain what it observes, or identify faults that could account for the evidence.
The Naval Postgraduate School’s A Model-Based Reasoning Primer describes this approach as reasoning from a model of the domain, including first principles about internal processes and causal relationships. The essential feature is the model’s role in reasoning—not a particular programming language, interface, or software architecture.

- Represent the domain. The system encodes relevant structure or behavior, such as components, their relationships, and the ways they can affect one another.
- Take in observations. It receives evidence about a specific case, such as measured outputs or reported symptoms.
- Reason about possible states. It evaluates which states or faults could produce the observations, using the model as a basis for inference.
- Present a result. Depending on the system, it may identify a likely fault, narrow down possible causes, or provide an explanation of the observed behavior.
In diagnosis, this process can support fault detection and isolation: recognizing that something is wrong and distinguishing among possible sources. The representation and inference method vary by application; there is no single architecture required for every model-based expert system. Traditional expert-system designs often include a knowledge base and inference engine, and may include working memory, an explanation facility, or a user interface. Those components are possible design elements, not the definition of model-based reasoning.

How is it different from rule-based and case-based reasoning?
The distinction is the kind of knowledge the system uses and how it reaches a conclusion. These approaches can be combined, so the categories are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

The Naval Postgraduate School primer contrasts reasoning from a domain model with reasoning using facts and rules. A NIST-hosted report similarly distinguishes empirical rules, which do not express underlying causality, from model-based reasoning that adds knowledge about the real-world system. A model-based system can still use rules; hybrid designs combine approaches when useful.

These differences do not establish that one approach is generally more accurate. Performance depends on the problem, the quality of the knowledge represented, and how well the system is designed for its task.

Where are model-based expert systems used?
Engineering troubleshooting and diagnosis
Model-based reasoning is a natural fit when diagnosing a complex engineered system because a model of components and their relationships can help explain observed behavior. The NIST-hosted report identifies engineering troubleshooting, including electronic troubleshooting, as an application area.

Historical example: electrical power distribution
A 1995 NASA technical report describes a model-based diagnostic expert system being developed for the Space Station Freedom electrical power distribution test bed. Its stated objective was “to autonomously detect and isolate electrical fault conditions.” This is an example of a research project and its intended purpose, not evidence that the system is a current product or operational deployment. Clinical decision-support concepts
A 2017 paper on clinical decision support describes model-based reasoning as simulating the structure and function of the system under study, and distinguishes it from rule-based and case-based reasoning. It illustrates that the concept can apply beyond engineering; it does not mean that all clinical decision-support systems use model-based reasoning. The paper is available through PubMed Central.

What to remember about the definition
- The defining element is an explicit domain model used in reasoning.
- The model can represent structure, function, internal processes, or cause and effect.
- Observations are interpreted in light of that model to infer possible states, explanations, or faults.
- Model-based reasoning can coexist with rules in a hybrid system.
- Diagnosis and troubleshooting are representative uses, but the approach is not limited to them.
